Chapter 597: My Parents’ Story

Helen’s thoughts drifted for a moment, but remembering where she was, she quickly pulled herself back.

She didn’t dwell on it any further and walked straight into the room.

“Selina, this gift was originally meant for your mother. I had it custom-made for my younger daughter, and I intended to give it to her on her wedding day. But…”

She didn’t finish the sentence. She had lost thirty years of her life, and she had lost Victoria forever. Saying more would only stir up grief.

So Helen cut herself off and simply nodded.

“Anyway, this gift is yours now.”

Selina nodded and followed Helen into the room.

Her grandmother had once prepared this as a wedding gift for her mother…

What would a wedding gift look like thirty years ago? A gold bracelet? A gold ring? In a family like the Hills, maybe something extravagant and antique, like a piece of fine jade?

But all her guesses ended the moment Selina laid eyes on what was inside the wooden box.

Selina: “…”

She instinctively glanced at Logan, and for once, even in his eyes she saw the words “hard to explain.”

Her gaze fell back to the box. Inside was a pitch-black object… um… that was a gun, right?

She couldn’t be mistaken—it was a gun. And not a fake one. A real gun.

Helen seemed oblivious to Selina’s stunned reaction. She said calmly,

“It’s yours. If I had given it to your mother back then, she probably would’ve passed it on to you at your wedding. Take it.”

Selina: “…”

Well, this was…

Helen said no more. Selina, still dazed, stepped out of the room holding the gun.

It took her a long silence before she finally looked at Logan, seeking confirmation.

“Grandma gave me a gun.”

Logan nodded. “Yeah.”

Selina: “This gun was originally meant for my mom.”

Logan: “Yeah.”

Selina suddenly remembered that Lady Cole and a few others had once mentioned her father was a scientist. He had spent years in a research institute, doing classified work. Even after his death, his name was never made public due to secrecy regulations.

That reminded Selina of a love story that had long circulated among the high society of City N. No one knew who the real couple was, but people said the man in the story was a scholar, gentle and soft-spoken, spending his days in a lab.

His fiancée, however, was a wild one—riding horses, climbing mountains, shooting guns—fearless and untamed.

The first time she saw her fiancé, she decided she wanted him. Originally, the arranged marriage was going to be canceled, but once the wild heiress set her eyes on him, how could anyone stop her? She took him.

The gentle man, who had secretly admired her all along, never confessed his feelings because their personalities were worlds apart. Who would’ve thought…

When Selina first heard this love story, she thought it was wonderful. So rare, that in City N there had once been such a bold and passionate young lady, and that the man wasn’t some overbearing CEO but a cultured scholar.

But now… Selina fell into a strange silence.

She stayed quiet for three full minutes before turning to Logan with uncertainty.

“Um… this love story… it wasn’t about my parents, was it?”

If it was, then maybe she had misunderstood her mother all along.

A mother with such a fierce spirit… could she really have been crushed so helplessly by Hannah? Could she really have been so easily deceived into marrying James? Could she really have been abused and destroyed by Katie?

Selina’s fingers brushed over the gun as her mind worked.

Maybe… she needed to start looking at things from a different angle.

The next day, Selina went to the Hill Family headquarters and was officially given a nominal position.

By the time she left, it was afternoon. She hadn’t eaten lunch and was feeling a little hungry, but it was still too early for dinner.

That was when she saw a message from Logan—a so-called “check-in guide.”

Selina: “…”

Did Logan really have this much free time?

She had just arrived in City N, which meant SL Group’s focus was also shifting here. She was so busy her feet barely touched the ground.

And yet Logan, who also ran a massive conglomerate, seemed to have enough spare time to browse online for trendy check-in spots in City N?

It was bizarre.

Then she saw Logan’s next line: It’s one of my businesses. I’ve already given orders. Go have some afternoon tea there, I’ll come pick you up later.

Selina’s expression stayed blank.

Oh. So it was his place.

She checked the address. The tea house wasn’t far, so she walked over.

As expected of a so-called “viral check-in spot,” the restaurant had a rose garden in the back, complete with a swing. Plenty of well-dressed influencers and bloggers were taking photos or streaming live, filling the place with noise and excitement.

Right away, Selina spotted a glowing little chalkboard outside the garden. It listed the menu prices and an extra line: Photo sessions—30 dollar for ten minutes.

A long line of influencers was waiting. Because Selina was so stunning, one of them mistook her for a fellow streamer. When she saw Selina heading straight in, she kindly reminded her:

“You need to pay first, otherwise lining up doesn’t count. I suggest you go for ninety dollar—half an hour. Oh, and… where’s your photographer?”

A question mark slowly appeared over Selina’s head. “?”

This… was really Logan’s business? Since when was Logan this trendy?

Selina typed a question mark in their chat.

Logan replied: Luke’s managing the place. How’s the business running?

Selina: …Hard to describe, but I suppose this is also a form of success.

Logan raised an eyebrow. As an investor, profits from a place like this weren’t even worth him bending down to pick up. That’s why he didn’t pay much attention. Luke had volunteered to manage it, wanting to give it a try.

But now, seeing Selina’s speechless reaction, Logan frowned.

He’d have to take a look for himself.

Selina thanked the influencer for her kindness and sat down at a table near the garden. It happened to be the last available seat; the previous guests had just left, so the timing was perfect.

The view was great. Being right by the rose garden, the air carried a light fragrance. No wonder this was one of City N’s hottest check-in spots.

The manager, having received Logan’s message, hurried out. Selina, however, didn’t have any particular demands. She casually ordered an afternoon tea set and sat back in a wicker chair, watching the influencers and streamers posing for photos.

Quite a few of them were streaming live. One “explore-the-shop” vlogger had set up her camera for a live broadcast. When her lens swept past the rose garden, Selina accidentally appeared on screen.

The comment section instantly exploded:

[Whoa, that girl is gorgeous!]

[Is she just a passerby? Or another influencer? This place is full of them!]

[Wait, I think I’ve seen her before… Wasn’t she at that perfume competition with Country Y? … Don’t tell me—that’s Piper?]

[Oh my god, it IS Piper! The internationally renowned perfumer! She’s the one who completely humiliated Country Y’s perfumer not long ago, and exposed their so-called chief perfumer for plagiarism!]

[Streamer, what are you waiting for? Go ask for her autograph!]

The streamer was tempted. If she could get Piper on camera, she wouldn’t have to worry about traffic for a long time.

She put on her brightest smile and hurried over. But just before she reached Selina, an old woman suddenly shoved her way into the frame.

In front of three hundred thousand live viewers, under everyone’s eyes, the old woman jabbed a finger right at Selina’s face and said, unreasonable and domineering:

“Get up! I want your seat!”
