Capítulo 591: You’re Not Credible to Me
A society matron sneered under her breath, “Figures — adopted kids and the adopted daughter can’t hold their own. Even now they’re scheming to push the Hill bloodline out of the Hill family.”
“Speaking of ingrates, who’s more of an ingrate than you?”
Those two lines were neither loud nor soft, yet everyone heard them clearly.
Matt’s face went deathly pale; his snarling expression deepened the lines on his face by two folds.
Hannah’s throat tightened; she gritted her teeth to stop herself from throwing that matron out.
“Wait a minute…” someone suddenly exclaimed, frowning, “West Cliff? The Hill ancestral home and West Cliff are in totally different directions — how could Miss Clark have had an accident over there?”
In an instant, everyone’s eyes swung to Selina.
Selina replied slowly, “Then we should ask this supposedly loyal Hill driver why he brought me to West Cliff.”
All eyes shifted from Selina to the driver.
The driver trembled, still protesting, “I— I didn’t, Miss. I never went to West Cliff. You’re not familiar with City N; I was just following the road—”
“Every Hill car has a GPS tracker. Run the check and you’ll see,” Selina said, lifting her gaze coolly. “You wouldn’t dare not do that, would you?”
The driver’s eyes snapped wide and he looked to Hannah.
Hannah’s mind raced — this wasn’t supposed to unfold like this. She had assumed the driver would finish the job, make it look like a fatal crash, and the tracker would be damaged and untraceable.
But Selina was standing there unharmed, and that car…
“That vehicle has already been towed back by our people. Luckily, the tracking system is intact. I’ll check the GPS right now,” Jack stepped forward and said, quickly putting a tablet on display. Everyone peered at the screen: it showed the Hills’ proprietary tracking interface.
On the tablet, the system simulated the car’s route, showing the full path it had taken.
“So it really went to West Cliff?!”
“Then why is the driver lying? Could he really have been planning to murder Miss Clark?”
“Hannah said the driver’s an old family retainer — he wouldn’t do something like that. Hmm… I guess the driver’s loyalty is to a Hill, but which Hill could it be…”
The driver’s face drained of color; he clenched his fists and desperately looked to Hannah for help.
Selina let out a light laugh. “Why are you looking at Mrs. Hill? Do you really think she can protect you now?”
“You planned to murder someone — do you know what that will cost you? Not just you; your whole family will be investigated from top to bottom.”
Selina sounded detached as she continued, “After all, you and I have no grudge. Why would you try to take me to West Cliff and drive us over the cliff? If Logan hadn’t arrived when he did, we’d probably both be dead right now.”
“I’ve never seen you before; I doubt you’ve seen me. Yet you’d be willing to risk your life to drag me to death with you — that makes no sense. So when the police are called, they’ll examine your bank accounts, look into your family, check who you’ve been meeting with. They’ll go through your relatives’ bank records and jobs, line by line.”
“Then they’ll trace who bought you off—”
Everyone nodded.
When Selina returned to the Hill Family, the ones who should’ve been anxious and enraged were Hannah and Matt. What did this have to do with a driver?
Would a driver really risk his life just to kill Selina?
Unless… someone had paid him a hefty price, promising that as long as he created a fatal “accident,” his family would be given a fortune.
But if Selina called the police, the driver would end up in prison, his family’s finances torn apart under investigation, and that money would never land in their accounts.
The driver’s expression panicked instantly. “I… no, I just… I just lost my head today, took the wrong road! I swear I didn’t have the guts to harm the young lady!”
Then he suddenly blurted, “And besides… I’m the Hill Family’s driver. Miss, you haven’t formally returned to the Hill Family yet, you don’t have the authority to deal with me!”
Selina actually laughed, not even sparing him a glance. “Fine. Since only Hill Family members can discipline you, then I’ll just report this to my uncle and cousin.”
The driver’s knees nearly buckled, and he instinctively sought help. “Hill—”
“Selina, it’s just a small matter, no need to trouble the master and big brother!”
Ava immediately stepped forward. She and Aaron were technically of the same generation, but since she wasn’t a true Hill by blood, she always called Aaron “big brother” in public to cozy up.
Selina called him cousin, but Ava called him big brother, as if she were the real family and Selina was just an outsider.
Ava complained, “Selina, you just came back and don’t yet understand the Hill Family’s rules. The family’s affairs are endless, the master and big brother are very busy. If you run to them for every little thing, won’t they be too busy to even rest?”
“You’re their kin — why would you trouble them with trivial matters? Don’t you care about them at all?”
Ava looked pitiful, as if standing up for Aaron. “Big brother welcomed you home, but that doesn’t mean you can be willful. Why not let Aunt handle this driver? If you really go bothering them over such a small thing…”
“Small thing?” Selina arched a brow, turned her gaze to Ava, and asked, enunciating each word: “Miss Hill thinks me nearly dying is a small thing?”
Ava’s face instantly soured.
She had never welcomed Selina. She believed she was the true Hill heiress, but the moment Selina appeared, she was nothing but a “foster daughter.” Why should she accept that?
She wanted to paint herself as gracious and magnanimous by saying those words, to contrast against Selina. She hadn’t expected Selina to slap her down so bluntly!
“Selina, Ava didn’t mean it that way,” Hannah stepped in softly. “I know you nearly had a car accident — of course that’s no small matter. The driver should be punished. But Ava isn’t wrong. The master and Aaron are extremely busy. If you trouble them with this, it will weigh on them further. Why not leave it to me?”
“I’ve been with the Hill Family for many years, I know these drivers well. I can uncover the truth. That way, one, I can get you justice, and two, I won’t trouble the master. What do you say, Selina? I’ll take the driver now…”
“Sorry,” Selina cut her off. “Mrs. Hill, I don’t trust you.”
Hannah: “…”
Her words lodged in her throat, her face darkening.
She was the Hill Family’s pampered daughter, spoiled and flattered her entire life. She never imagined that today, a single “I don’t trust you” from Selina could make her throat burn with fury.
