Chapter 577: Sealed Off
No. No, that’s not right…
A flash of terror surged in Amelia’s chest. “Selina, what are you laughing at?!”
Selina didn’t answer. She kept that faint curve of a smile, her eyes coolly fixed on Amelia, as if watching prey walk willingly into a trap.
Amelia’s composure cracked, as though a string in her mind suddenly snapped. “I asked you what you’re laughing at!”
Daniel noticed something was wrong too.
Selina had asked Amelia twice—whether the one to marry Miss Paula had to be her biological son.
And Amelia had answered yes.
After that, Selina had worn this same knowing smile.
Could it be…?
Daniel’s brow twitched. A powerful sense of dread welled up inside him.
“Mrs. Perry.” Selina finally spoke, slow and deliberate. “Mrs. Perry, you’d better remember—it must be your biological son who marries Miss Paula.”
“Since you’ve already taken Duke William’s twenty billion, if the one to wed Miss Paula turns out not to be your biological son, then you’ll have thoroughly offended the William family and the entire nobility of Country Y. I doubt the Reid Family can bear the consequences.”
Amelia panicked, cold sweat dripping down her forehead. “What do you mean? What do you mean—Logan! Selina! Tell me clearly!”
Her shrill voice was so piercing that everyone wished they could cover their ears. “What the hell are you laughing at—ahhh!”
“Madam, bad news! Young Master Owen is missing!” A frantic voice suddenly cut through Amelia’s hysteria.
An assistant rushed in, drenched in sweat, ignoring the setting as he blurted out, “Young Master Owen’s phone won’t connect. We went to his room and discovered he’s been kidnapped! The kidnappers even left a note—please, take a look!”
…
Everyone froze.
What was going on?
Everyone knew the purpose of Amelia’s press conference today—to force Logan into a business marriage with Miss Paula.
But Owen—kidnapped? Out of nowhere? Why him?
Amelia snapped out of her daze, sweat still beading on her forehead. “What did you say?”
The assistant urged, “Madam, Young Master Owen’s phone is dead. We searched his room and found he’s been kidnapped. The kidnappers left a letter—please read it!”
In Amelia’s heart, Owen was everything. If she lost Owen, she lost everything.
She didn’t care that Logan was standing right there—she snatched the letter, her face going ghostly pale. Her body staggered half a step. “K-kidnapped…”
Her eyes suddenly snapped up, wild with fury. “It was you! Logan, it was you! That ungrateful bastard—what has your brother ever done to you, and you send people to kidnap him?! Was it you?!”
Amelia lunged like a madwoman, trying to slap Logan across the face. Logan merely stepped aside, and she crashed to the ground with a loud thud.
Everyone looked on in confusion, glancing at one another.
Logan lowered his gaze indifferently. “Owen’s made plenty of enemies outside. But no matter who comes after him, Mrs. Perry always lays the blame on me. I’m used to it.”
Everyone: “…”
As much as they hated to admit it—he had a point.
Owen was a notorious spoiled brat, the kind who bullied men and harassed women. In front of Chairman Reid and Amelia he pretended to be innocent, like some delicate little flower. But in reality, his cruelty was common knowledge.
He’d offended so many people that it wasn’t surprising someone would want revenge.
“Nonsense, you’re lying!” Amelia sobbed and screamed. “My Owen is the sweetest boy—he has such a kind heart, he could never have enemies! It must be you! You’re jealous of him—it’s all you…”
But those very words only made others more suspicious.
So Owen really is her biological son, right?
“It’s you, damn you, why won’t you just die! Why wasn’t it you who was kidnapped instead of my Owen—why?!”
Amelia wailed and thrashed about, nothing left of the once high-and-mighty society lady she used to be.
“Mrs. Reid, shouldn’t you first check on Young Master Owen’s condition?”
“Yes, the kidnappers left a note—it must be a ransom demand, right?”
“Should we call the police?”
Someone from the audience suggested it, but Amelia’s eyes had just landed on a line in the letter—If Mrs. Reid dares call the police, she’ll face the consequences.
A violent shiver ran through her body. “No, no police! Absolutely no police! Turn the cameras off!”
The reporters had been invited by the Reid Family, so they had no choice but to obey. Still, confusion filled their hearts.
Even if there was no livestream, with so many witnesses here, word of Owen’s kidnapping would spread. If it couldn’t be hidden, why refuse to call the police?
The look on Mrs. Reid’s face… it was as if calling the police would expose some unspeakable secret. To the point where she seemed guilty.
But Owen was the one kidnapped—Amelia was the victim. What could she possibly be guilty about?
At this moment, Amelia had no mind for Logan or Duke William. Her face blank, she stumbled into the lounge and stared again and again at the kidnappers’ note, tears flowing freely, her eyes brimming with hatred.
But Owen was in their hands. Her Owen…
No, no! Amelia suddenly snapped back, fumbling for her phone. She quickly dialed the number written on the envelope.
What if it’s fake? What if it’s fake…
But the next moment, her fragile hope was crushed.
The other party hung up, only to call her back with a video feed.
On the screen, Owen was tied up tightly, shoved inside what looked like an abandoned warehouse.
A masked kidnapper greeted her almost cheerfully. “Mrs. Reid.”
Amelia’s eyes nearly split apart with fury. “Who are you?! Let Owen go—give me back my Owen!”
…
Meanwhile, back at the press conference.
The hall doors were blocked by Reid Family bodyguards, not allowing anyone to leave. Even if Reid Family Group had gone bankrupt, a dying camel was still bigger than a horse—hiring a few guards was no trouble.
The reporters didn’t know what to do anymore. This story obviously couldn’t be published. Wasn’t the Reid Family turning themselves into a joke?
And then there were Duke William and Miss Paula. They were supposed to be the stars of today’s show, yet Amelia had completely forgotten them. Their faces were sour with humiliation.
Duke William tugged at Paula, wanting to leave, but Paula refused. She wouldn’t give up on Logan—not until Amelia and the Reids publicly acknowledged the “marriage.”
So the standoff dragged on.
Daniel tried to keep order in the hall, but since Paula’s so-called “savior” was Amelia, Duke William might not even bother showing him respect. And Logan—Logan couldn’t be bothered in the slightest.
For the first time, Daniel felt truly powerless, standing in the center of the hall with a red face, looking like a complete fool.
He even thought about going to the lounge to check on Owen’s situation. But just then…
Selina lowered her voice, her tone tinged with amusement. “How does Owen just happen to get kidnapped? Kidnapping’s against the law, you know, Mr. Reid.”
Logan’s hand paused over his teacup. He set it down and answered evenly, “You’ll find out soon enough.”
