Chapter 567: Adoption—or Just Use?
Selina watched the video for a moment before switching off her phone. “Home?”
Logan smiled. “I’ll take you somewhere.”
Soon, Selina found herself at a luxury shopping mall.
Standing before the perfume counter, she was surprised. “My perfumes? They’ve all been renamed?”
These perfumes had originally been credited to Ronald, but after today’s truth was revealed, the name had been changed to Piper.
Only—it shouldn’t have been this fast.
In just a few hours, perfumes engraved with Ronald’s name would have had to be recalled, repackaged, and redistributed to perfume counters everywhere.
And the production of new packaging should have taken time.
Yet it was obvious these “Piper” packages had been prepared well in advance.
The elegant, designer “Piper” signature, paired with the flawless packaging, all released under the Reid Group’s acquisition.
Selina gave him a meaningful glance. “Oh… so you knew all along.”
Logan gave a faint, careless smile. “Do you like it?”
Selina answered honestly. “I like it very much. Though I imagine Amelia and Owen must be ready to explode with rage.”
Owen had wanted these very perfumes, the sales rights in the domestic market—that was why he partnered with Ronald.
Now, not only had he failed to secure the rights, he was disgraced beyond repair, while Logan had profited handsomely.
Selina suddenly thought of another point. “Paula hasn’t left yet. Does she still intend to pursue a business marriage alliance?”
Logan’s eyes darkened slightly. “Paula wants to arrange a business marriage with Amelia’s son. Of course I’ll let her have what she wants.”
Selina blinked, catching the off-note in his words. “So you mean to say…”
“What female client? Hunter, your sister said she wanted this bottle of perfume. Can’t you give it to her? Do you have to give it to some female client? Stop bringing all that nonsense into the house. Stay away from those women!”
At that moment, an angry female voice cut Selina off.
The voice sounded strangely familiar. And paired with the name Hunter…
She instinctively turned her head.
The salesgirl stood there awkwardly, holding a delicate gift bag. Selina immediately recognized it—it was one of her old creations, named Rainy Season.
Previously released under Ronald’s name, now it had been recalled, repackaged, and relaunched. Already a bestseller, once restored under Piper’s name it sold out in just two short hours, leaving only one bottle.
That one bottle had been reserved yesterday by Hunter, who intended to give it to a business partner. The salesgirl had packaged it up and even had a card written with the partner’s name.
But when Hunter arrived to pick up the perfume, he happened to run into Madam Nelson and Riley, who had also come to buy it.
Riley wanted Rainy Season as well, and Madam Nelson pressured Hunter to hand it over.
Selina clicked her tongue and muttered under her breath, “What, is Hunter some pushover?”
The way Madam and Mr. Nelson acted left Selina dumbfounded. Taking a bottle of perfume was one thing, but they had watched Hunter build his business from nothing, never offering him any help. And once he had built his company, they shamelessly demanded he hand it over to Riley.
And Riley had half-heartedly, yet willingly, accepted it.
But truth be told, Hunter would have done just fine even without their “adoption.” Everyone knew perfectly well whether the Nelson Family had adopted him as a son or as a money-making machine.
Not every adopted child turned out like Owen and Amelia. At least Hunter wasn’t one of them.
And over there, Hunter refused.
Madam Nelson was still wailing, “Our Nelson Family adopted you—don’t you have a shred of conscience?! We’ve fed you and clothed you all these years, and now you won’t even give your sister a single bottle of perfume? How could you be such an ungrateful wolf? What female client? I don’t believe it for a second—you must be keeping some woman outside. Damn it, what woman could ever compare to your own sister?!”
Riley stood by with a look of feigned helplessness, but made no effort to stop her.
Logan’s gaze shifted lightly as he stepped forward.
“Hunter.”
All three of them turned their heads at once. Madam Nelson’s expression flickered with unease. “Logan, you…”
“Madam Nelson.” Logan’s tone was flat. “If I recall, there were no shortage of families who wanted to adopt Hunter back then. My grandmother herself wanted to adopt him. But in the end, it seemed the Nelson Family resorted to less-than-honorable means. So…”
“Logan! Oh, what nonsense is this?” Madam Nelson immediately shrieked. “Everything we did was for Hunter’s own good. Enough about the past—what’s the point of dragging it up? We didn’t adopt Hunter to take advantage of him!”
Even Selina could see it—the Nelson Family’s adoption of Hunter was never as simple as “giving Riley a brother to play with.”
Yet Hunter only answered with a simple acknowledgment.
Selina: “…” What breed of pushover is this?
But out of sight of the others, Logan’s eyes met Hunter’s. The latter gave the slightest nod, his gaze sharp and cold, showing not the faintest trace of being a “soft target.”
Logan asked quietly, “What’s going on?”
At that, Madam Nelson’s energy surged back.
“Logan, Riley came all this way just to get this perfume. The counter had already sold out, and it just so happened Hunter had one bottle. But he refuses to give it to Riley. He insists on giving it to some female client… Tell me, isn’t he fooling around with some improper woman? How can any woman out there compare to your sister? Heartless!”
Only then did Riley bite her lip, pretending to defend Hunter. “Mom, stop. Brother’s work is important…”
“Important? What’s important about work? Nothing is more important than you! You’ve been treated like a princess in our Nelson Family since you were little. And now look—he’d rather throw it away on some improper, low-class woman…”
“If I may.” Selina arched a brow, cutting in. “This so-called improper woman Madam Nelson speaks of—would that be the head of the SL Group’s distribution department?”
Madam Nelson’s throat caught. She turned toward Selina, about to lash out, but Hunter nodded instead. “It’s her.”
Selina smiled. “I’ve heard Nelson Group approached SL Group several times, but your company wasn’t qualified enough to secure a partnership and was rejected. Still, that department head was willing to give Nelson Group a chance on Mr. Nelson’s account. So this perfume, Mr. Nelson, was meant as a thank-you gift to Director Perez, wasn’t it?”
Hunter nodded again.
Selina drew out her tone. “Oh… so in Madam Nelson’s eyes, the head of SL Group’s distribution department is just some improper woman?”
The crowd’s gaze on Madam Nelson shifted instantly, now filled with nothing but contempt.
That director was known for being decisive and formidable—a true businesswoman. She was around the same age as Madam Nelson, yet while Madam Nelson spent her days shopping and at beauty salons, Perez was one of SL Group’s top executives. And she dared to call Perez an improper woman?
“You, you…” Madam Nelson’s face went pale, then flushed crimson. She quickly redirected her anger onto Hunter. “This is your fault for not saying so earlier! And besides, your sister—”
“Mom!” Riley bit her lip and cut in. “I’m sorry, Brother. I didn’t realize this bottle of perfume was so important…”
