Chapter 668: Race to Ascension Isle
Lyla’s eyes lit up.
Ethan, however, was caught in an awkward silence. He couldn’t understand why Lyla would suddenly bring up seeing Amber Zane and Rainie Chen together, or why she claimed the Nether Jade was something she had personally given away.
Earlier, when he discovered the dry cavern, he had fought hard to break through the milky-white flames guarding its entrance. Inside, he found a massive shark skeleton.
And there was Astrid— that silly girl, feasting as if she hadn’t eaten in days. The shark, easily over fifty feet long, had been completely devoured by her.
Ethan could only piece things together because Lyla had been lying unconscious near the cavern wall. She had only begun to stir after he entered, groggy and weak, as if waking from a deep slumber. Judging by her state—and the growl of her stomach—she clearly hadn’t eaten anything.
Yet Astrid now slept soundly nearby, breathing slow and even like a kitten, her stomach perfectly flat. There was no sign at all of how she could have possibly eaten a fifty-foot shark.
Lyla, after nibbling on the food Ethan offered, was now gazing at him with that teasing little smile of hers.
It was the kind of smile that said, without words: So, who is Rainie Chen?
Ethan awkwardly rubbed his nose. “She… she was a classmate. Back in high school.”
He didn’t dare lie. The look in Lyla’s eyes made it clear she already knew the truth.
“I know,” Lyla said, her eyes narrowing into crescent moons. A playful curve appeared at the corner of her lips. “You even wrote her a love letter.”
“I… I…” Ethan stammered, completely thrown off. He couldn’t remember ever telling her that.
Then it hit him—it must have been that night after he came back from the Sea of Death. He’d gotten drunk and hadn’t bothered to burn off the alcohol with his energy. A drunk Ethan was a loose-tongued Ethan. He’d probably started rambling about old stories, and the Rainie Chen love letter incident had slipped out somewhere in there.
At the time, Lyla hadn’t thought much of it. Everyone had a past, after all. Even though she and Ethan had known each other for years, she hadn’t been there back then. It wasn’t as if he wasn’t allowed to have liked someone else. Lyla was not a petty woman.
But hearing Rainie Chen’s name now stirred something unexpected. It wasn’t jealousy—it was a curious warmth, an odd sense of closeness she couldn’t explain. The feeling surprised her. For a brief moment, she even found herself wondering what kind of person Rainie Chen was.
“Speaking of which,” Lyla said, pushing the thought aside, “what exactly are we doing at Ascension Isle?”
She remembered Ethan’s earlier conversation with Victor and the others. The name had come up then, and it had clearly been something serious.
At her question, Ethan’s expression darkened. He squinted, his tone turning grim. “Amber has been taken.”
“What?” Lyla’s eyes widened.
“It was someone from the Seredin family—a guy named Alaric. Apparently, he even recited some pretentious poem while doing it,” Ethan said, his face tight with anger.
“Alaric Seredin?” Lyla repeated, startled, though her reaction wasn’t quite the one Ethan expected.
“Wait, you know him?” he asked, catching the strange note in her voice.
“Of course I do,” Lyla said with a frown. “He’s Amber’s fiancé.”
“What? Fiancé?” Ethan shot up from where he was sitting, his voice booming loud enough to startle the sea turtle beneath them.
“Ouch!” Lyla clapped a hand over her ear and looked up at Ethan in irritation. “Bro, what’s with the yelling? You’re deafening me!”
She rubbed her ear, then pouted, muttering just loud enough for herself, “Fiancé, huh? So what? Why are you so worked up? He’s Amber’s fiancé, not mine…”
Her voice was barely a whisper, but every person there was an Energy User—they all heard it. No one said a word. Even Ethan pretended not to notice.
He was torn. He still hadn’t figured out how to explain his history with Amber Zane to Lyla, and now suddenly Amber’s fiancé had shown up—and had taken her away. For a moment, Ethan didn’t even know what he should do about this whole trip to Ascension Isle.
Even if the man’s methods were questionable, he was still her fiancé. That alone made things messy.
If Ethan didn’t go, his conscience would gnaw at him. But if he did go… was he about to crash a wedding?
Before he could decide, Lyla spoke again, her voice bright with determination. “Oh, I remember Amber telling me she really hated that engagement! The whole thing was arranged by the House of Zane, and she never agreed to it. That’s why she fought against the marriage contest at the Silverwood family’s gathering—and why she helped me. You said she was taken, right? Then it’s our turn to save her!”
Hearing that, Ethan’s eyes lit up.
“An arranged marriage? Holy hell, that’s barbaric!”
His spirit flared back to life. He turned toward Princess Star with a wild grin. “Tell this old turtle to move! I live for interfering in barbaric nonsense like this. Just watch me knock the pants off that Alaric Seredin!”
The girls all rolled their eyes at his bravado. Princess Star’s face flushed bright red, though she couldn’t quite hide her smile.
Lyla watched him curiously. She didn’t understand why that one sentence had completely transformed his mood—but seeing him fired up again made her strangely happy. She didn’t need to know the reason. Whatever it was, she agreed with him wholeheartedly.
Princess Star nodded and let out a quick series of sharp clicks.
The massive sea turtle beneath them turned its head, gave a deep, mournful groan, and then its limbs began to churn the water like giant paddles.
Whoosh…
In an instant, they understood what speed really meant. Moments ago, the old turtle had moved lazily, gliding through the sea like a drifting cloud. Now, the world around them blurred into streaks of blue and silver as the ocean rushed by.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
The sound of wind tore through the water around them, a low roar that vibrated through their bones.
Ethan glanced at the display on his arm. The red dot marking Ascension Isle was closing in fast—and from the north, a green dot was moving toward the same point.
That green dot was Shatterstar.
He checked their velocity. The turtle was now cruising at over 600 kilometers per hour.
If they’d been on land, they might as well have been flying.
