Chapter 635: The Five-Colored Devouring
Ethan saw the massive catfish-like mouth looming before him and immediately reached out to Yaya with his mind.
“Yaya, control the Tree of Life! Don’t let it release any more life energy!” he urged, his voice trembling with anxiety.
“But… brother…” Yaya’s voice quivered, uncertain. She barely managed half a sentence before Ethan cut her off.
“Yaya, listen to me. Do it now—hurry! It’ll be too late if you don’t!”
The foul stench from the creature’s gaping mouth hit him like a wave, thick and rotten. The Quintessence Bone, which was supposed to shield him in moments of mortal danger, still lay dormant. Yaya’s constant replenishing of his life energy had kept him from reaching that critical threshold, leaving the bone’s power idle and unwilling to awaken.
“Alright…” Yaya finally answered, her voice small.
In the next instant, the Tree of Life fell silent, as if someone had closed a valve. The change was immediate. The monstrous suction around him surged, threatening to rip the last threads of life essence from his body. Ethan could feel it pulling at his core, dragging his very being toward nothingness. If the essence left him completely, he knew he would crumble to dust, nothing more than a smear of soil on the ground.
He clenched his teeth and bore the pain. His entire body was soaked in cold sweat. Just as the final wisp of life essence seemed about to slip away, his body shuddered violently—and then, a five-colored light burst out from within him. The light flared and spread, forming a thin barrier that instantly blocked the devouring power.
“Phew… finally out,” Ethan muttered, exhaling a long breath. His eyes glinted with relief and defiance. The five-colored light shimmered faintly around him, and the energy that could supposedly consume everything now faltered uselessly against that fragile-looking glow.
The Dragon of Consumption sensed it too. “Hmm? Drain me!” it growled, its deep voice vibrating through the air as its catfish mouth gaped even wider. The suction grew so violent that the little golden dragon hovering high above was pulled off balance, its wings flaring as it darted hastily away. Yet, in its bright, intelligent eyes flickered a hint of cunning amusement, as if it were watching a game unfold.
No matter how fiercely the dragon tried, the draining power simply couldn’t reach Ethan anymore. A frustrated grunt rumbled from its throat. Then, in a blur of dark energy, a black-clad figure appeared before him.
“As expected, a rare treasure,” the man sneered. His voice was the Dragon of Consumption’s own. “If it can neutralize my innate divine ability, then I’ll just smash you to pieces and study your bones myself.”
Before Ethan could respond, the man lunged, throwing a heavy punch.
“Luna…” Ethan whispered, the corner of his mouth twitching faintly. He lifted his hand, and the Twilight War Spear appeared in his grasp, solid and cold. “Green Wood Radiance.”
A low hum rippled through the air. A green light glowed along his arm, seeping into the spear and tracing elegant patterns that stretched to its tip.
“Open!” Ethan roared, thrusting upward.
The shadow of the dragon’s punch shattered on impact, bursting into fragments of dark mist.
The Dragon of Consumption let out a puzzled growl. Its strength was unmatched—yet this mortal, this fragile human who had no aura at all, had just dispersed its strike with ease.
“I’m done playing with you. Die!” it snarled.
Ethan’s lips curved slightly, a spark of confidence flickering through his exhaustion. He twirled the Twilight War Spear in his grip.
“White Metal Radiance…” He spat out a mouthful of blood, his chest heaving, as golden light spilled into the air. The spear gleamed, another pattern blooming alongside the green one.
“Water Flow Radiance… Pfft!” More blood escaped his lips, yet his gaze remained steady.
“Fire Blaze Radiance… Pfft!”
“Earth Mountain Radiance… Pfft!”
One after another, the elements answered his call. The Twilight War Spear now shimmered with five radiant colors, its surface alive with intertwining lights that pulsed like a living thing.
Each time a new light flared, Ethan coughed up another mouthful of blood. By the time he finished chanting the fifth phrase, five distinct colors shimmered around him—green, yellow, red, black, and white—each echoing the hues of the Quintessence Bone within his body.
But it wasn’t over.
Under the shocked gaze of the Dragon of Consumption, Ethan wiped the blood from his mouth. A faint grin stretched across his face, his teeth streaked crimson. The sight alone made the creature’s scales crawl.
“Five-Colored Divine Light, manifest… All within the Five Elements are mine to command—drain!”
Ethan flicked the tip of the Twilight War Spear. The weapon traced a glowing circle through the air.
Pfft, pfft, pfft!
Three more mouthfuls of blood spattered the ground, but Ethan didn’t falter. The circle spun faster, twisting into a radiant vortex that expanded until it loomed over the entire island. The five-colored light surged into the swirling core, merging into a single blinding maelstrom.
A powerful suction erupted outward, locking directly onto the Dragon of Consumption.
“Ah…? Ahhh—!”
The dragon’s cry shifted from disbelief to panic as it was dragged toward the vortex. Shadows peeled from its body, curling like thick black smoke, and were swallowed whole. Its human form shattered, reverting to its original monstrous shape—a grotesque, massive catfish-like beast writhing in the air.
“No… impossible… my divine ability—consume—give it back to me!”
The dragon roared in fury, opening its cavernous mouth. A dark vortex formed within it, clashing against Ethan’s five-colored maelstrom. For a moment, it managed to stall the pull—but only barely. Compared to the vast energy of the Five-Colored Divine Light, its resistance was like a single wave against a rising tide.
The dragon’s smoky aura continued to pour from its scales, devoured piece by piece.
“No… no! Please, spare me!” The Dragon of Consumption’s voice cracked. Its earlier arrogance had vanished completely.
Ethan’s expression didn’t change. “Spare you? And what would I gain from that?” he asked, his tone calm, almost casual.
“Spare me, and I’ll serve you!” the creature pleaded desperately. “Together with the Fortune Dragon, I form the true Ancestral Dragon! You would command both fortune and consumption—and my divine power would be yours to wield!”
Its fear was genuine. Ethan could feel the trembling in its voice, the raw terror of a creature that knew death was close enough to taste.
“Tch. What use is your power to me? This Five-Colored Divine Light is already enough,” Ethan scoffed, spitting another mouthful of blood onto the ground. His body trembled, but his grip on the spear never wavered.
“No, you don’t understand!” the Dragon of Consumption cried. “You can’t fully control the Five-Colored Divine Light. Its strength will fade—it isn’t yours to keep! But my divine ability is different. Once it becomes yours, you can absorb the Energy of others to strengthen yourself!”
“Shut up,” Ethan snapped, cutting him off. His voice was sharp, filled with disgust. “I’d never use something that vile.”
But before his words could fully leave his lips, another voice stirred in his mind—clear and calm, echoing from the depths of his consciousness.
“Whether a technique is evil depends on the heart that wields it. You cannot kill this dragon, Ethan. It will become vital to your future battle against him… and to your great fortune. Why else do you think the Fortune Dragon brought you here?”
The voice of Morzan faded into silence.
Ethan froze, his expression tightening. Deep down, he hated the thought. The idea of absorbing others’ power—others’ essence—made his skin crawl. He had always been particular about such things, unwilling to taint himself with what he saw as filth.
And yet, if Morzan was right…
He lowered his gaze, the five-colored vortex still roaring around him, and his heart wavered between revulsion and duty.
