Chapter 634: The Dragon That Devours Itself
Crack, crack, crack…
The moment Ethan shouted, the Twilight War Spear appeared, reshaping itself into two sharp, clawed gauntlets that wrapped tightly around his hands. Combined with his towering Bear Form, he looked like a living fortress of muscle and fury, primal and majestic.
“Open up!” he bellowed. Boom! His claws slammed against the cage. The impact echoed like thunder, momentarily breaking the Dragon of Consumption’s draining ability.
“Drain me!” the creature shrieked, instantly reigniting its bloodline skill.
“Open!” “Drain!” The two powers collided again and again in a brutal rhythm. Ethan’s blows repeatedly interrupted the dragon’s draining, while the beast stubbornly restarted it, each time more desperate than before.
Finally, a faint crack appeared where Ethan’s claws had struck the hardest. Without hesitation, he dug his claws in and tore with everything he had. CRACK! The cage, made of some unknown yet impossibly tough material, finally gave way. Ethan ripped out a jagged fragment and roared in triumph.
“Damn it… you want to drain me? Get out here!” His voice shook with rage. Bloodshot eyes wide, he thrust his arm through the opening. Pop! The soft inner layer burst as his claws punched through. He reached for the Dragon of Consumption.
The dragon’s eyes filled with disbelief. This human — this insignificant insect — had just torn through Dragon-Locking Stone. Impossible. Even in its prime, breaking that stone had been difficult. Could this human have reached that level of strength?
But despite Ethan’s arm inside, the Dragon of Consumption was slippery, darting away like a mudfish. It dodged every grab, draining energy from him all the while. Ethan could feel his strength rapidly fading; his massive demigod body, once towering over a thousand meters, had already shrunk below nine hundred.
And the dragon’s aura only grew stronger.
He had already used his ultimate form, yet he couldn’t overpower it. Rage burned in him. The creature’s ability was vile, parasitic. Was this a legendary Devouring Ability?
“Eeyah-yah…”
A familiar chirping echoed behind him. Ethan turned, spotting the small Golden Dragon — the manifestation of the Ancestral Dragon’s Imperial Aura — floating in midair. Strangely, the draining power didn’t affect it at all. The little dragon pointed from Ethan to the caged monster, chattering in rapid bursts as if trying to instruct him.
Ethan frowned, confused but hopeful. Maybe it had a plan. He tried reaching out with his Soul Sense, but the little dragon didn’t respond, leaving him frustrated and guessing.
“Hmph! Fortune Dragon, what drivel are you spewing? Stronger draining power than mine? Impossible!” the Dragon of Consumption snarled, voice filled with contempt. “You think you can drain me? Keep dreaming!”
Ethan froze for a moment. That meant the creature actually understood the little dragon’s chatter. And if he understood right… the Golden Dragon was saying there was something that could drain this monster.
But what could that be? He combed through every ability, every artifact he owned. None had any draining traits.
“Eeyah-yah!”
The little Golden Dragon, hearing the insult, suddenly floated forward. It puffed up proudly like a tiny seahorse standing upright, paws on its hips, and began chattering furiously at the Dragon of Consumption.
“Pure nonsense! You’ve been reborn into an idiot! You foolish dragon! When I’m free, I’ll eat you alive! I’ll drain you and become whole again — the true Ancestral Dragon!”
The Dragon of Consumption trembled with fury, its voice shaking the cage. The little Golden Dragon had struck a nerve — mocking the very pride of its draining power.
But the bravado didn’t last long. The small dragon’s eyes darted, and it quickly hid behind Ethan’s massive ear, trembling. Its tiny head poked out timidly, looking pitiful.
Ethan was speechless. After all that noise, now it was acting like a scared child. And he still had no idea what it was actually trying to say.
“Hmph! Boy, I heard you possess a five-colored bone. Show it to me!” the Dragon of Consumption demanded, its tone dripping with scorn. “I want to see what could possibly rival my draining essence!”
“Uh… what?” Ethan blinked, caught off guard. Five-colored bone? Could it mean the Quintessence Bone? That thing’s power stronger than the dragon’s? It sounded absurd, yet… when he glanced back, the little Golden Dragon’s eyes gleamed with mischief, and it nodded vigorously.
Ethan’s heart skipped. Holy crap. The little creature had actually tricked the Dragon of Consumption into relaying its message. It wasn’t brainless at all. Then why had it ignored his Soul Sense earlier?
“Little ant! I said show it to me!” the Dragon of Consumption roared, its patience gone.
Meanwhile, Ethan’s claws didn’t stop. He had already torn loose two more chunks of the cage. Show you? I’ll show you my ass, he thought grimly. He didn’t even know how to properly use the Quintessence Bone yet — only that it was powerful enough for Morzan to risk everything to make him obtain it.
What he did know was that it protected its host automatically.
‘Automatic protection…’
His eyes widened as the thought clicked. He looked at the little Golden Dragon, who stared back knowingly.
“Little guy, if you’re tricking me, I’ll roast you,” he muttered under his breath. Then, taking a deep breath, he took a deliberate step back. “Since you’re so eager to die… I will grant your wish. Transformation — Ancient Demigod… skill terminated!”
He cut off his own transformation mid-battle.
Agony ripped through his body. His towering frame shrank rapidly, strength bleeding out of him. The sudden weakness made his face go pale. He could barely resist the pull — the Dragon of Consumption’s draining power sucked him in completely. His body was dragged through the crack and into the cage.
“Gah-hah-hah!” The Dragon of Consumption burst into laughter, its glee echoing like thunder. “Foolish human! Offering yourself to me!”
Ethan’s vision blurred as the suction intensified. He could feel his energy, his life, being stripped away layer by layer.
“Come on… come out…” he growled through clenched teeth, forcing his will toward the Quintessence Bone within him. His Tree of Life — the tender green sprout rooted deep in his body — trembled violently, flooding him with waves of emerald light. Life essence surged to resist the drain, replenishing what was stolen.
The Dragon of Consumption’s eyes widened with hunger. “Such pure life energy! So it’s true — you carry divine fortune! That Fortune Dragon led you to this, didn’t it? What a pity…” Its laughter grew manic. “It will all become mine!”
