Chapter 379: Nature Authority

[Host has unlocked: Nature Authority.]

As soon as the system finished saying that, the sudden influx of knowledge came pouring down, and it didn’t arrive like a whisper in his ear. It didn’t trickle down piece by piece.

It came all at once, a flood that crashed through him and carved itself into his mind so sharply that he almost forgot to breathe.

There was no denying it, no chance to push it aside. It was as if the power had been waiting inside him this entire time, sealed off in some hidden corner, patient until the exact moment the lock gave way.

Healing, yes—but not the gentle, merciful kind that closed wounds without question. This was different. This was healing that asked for something back.

No, not asked. Demanded. Restoration that came with a price. Life is given only after life is taken. He could feel it already, the rhythm of it, the cycle that had nothing to do with kindness and everything to do with balance.

To give, he would have to take. To mend, he would first have to drain from plants and trees, from the tiny creatures that filled the world’s cracks, even from the bodies of enemies left cold in the dirt.

His chest rose and fell steadily, his breathing slow, his face calm. On the surface, he looked unchanged, his body still pressed against the warmth of the girls on either side of him.

But under the surface, everything shifted. His veins carried a storm, his thoughts stretched too thin and too sharp to be still.

He couldn’t let it show. Not now. Not when Evelyn’s head rested so lightly on his chest, not when Everly’s hand was still twined with his own.

They didn’t know what had just opened inside him, and he didn’t want them to—not yet. Not when he hadn’t even begun to understand it himself.

So he stayed still, let their weight anchor him, let the peace of their presence hold him together, and pretended nothing had changed, even though every part of him knew everything had.

Evelyn shifted first. A soft yawn slipped past her lips as she curled tighter into his side, her words heavy with sleep.

“Don’t start thinking too much now,” she murmured, half lost to dreams already. “Just stay here with us.”

A laugh escaped him, quieter than the storm inside, softer than the truth that had just been etched into him.

“I’m here,” he promised, his hand brushing gently along her arm, his fingers trailing in a slow, steady line. “I’m not going anywhere.”

Everly’s grip tightened faintly, her small hum barely louder than a breath, yet the weight of it pressed deep into him.

She didn’t need to add words. He understood her meaning as clearly as if she had spoken them aloud.

The closeness of their bodies, the rhythm of their breathing, the soft golden haze that filled the room—it all wrapped around him like armor, a shield against the sharp edges of the new power pulsing beneath his skin.

For the moment, it was enough. He told himself it had to be. He knew he couldn’t share this with them. Not tonight.

Maybe not for a long while. Not until he could bear its weight without flinching. But with peak silver still humming in his bones and the sharp sting of Nature Authority running under his skin, he forced himself to believe—for now—that this was enough.

The lamp on the far table dimmed slowly, the glow softening with each passing breath until the room felt less like a space and more like a cocoon of gold.

The world beyond it seemed to shrink, fading until all that existed was this couch, this faint light, and the steady warmth of the two girls pressed close to him.

Their closeness never faltered. Their breathing never broke its rhythm. And with them like this, he let the system’s weight slide into the far corner of his mind where it couldn’t ruin the fragile peace he’d been given.

Time stretched out, long enough that even his own eyes began to grow heavier. For once, the system didn’t press.

It stayed quiet, its silence heavy but patient, as if it were letting him breathe, letting him hold onto this calm before it demanded more.

That silence was almost worse than its voice, because it meant the next time it spoke, its words would matter.

And yet, with Everly’s fingers curled so tightly around his and Evelyn’s breath warming his chest, he managed to let calm win.

Just as his mind began to drift toward the edges of sleep, the familiar chime struck through him like a bell. Not loud, not harsh, but undeniable. Clear. Certain. Impossible to ignore.

[Host, this time it took longer because the powers you unlocked were… irregular. They do not belong to many.

In truth, they belong to only one race. That is why it took months to stabilize them. But now, you are ready.]

His eyes snapped open. The muscles in his body stiffened, though he forced them to loosen again so the twins wouldn’t wake.

Even so, the small shift drew Evelyn’s attention. Her lashes fluttered, her sleepy gaze rising toward him.

“What is it?” she whispered.

He smoothed a hand over her hair, letting his voice stay low, almost a hum. “Nothing. Just thinking.”

She studied him for a heartbeat, her gaze searching, then gave a soft sigh and let her head settle back against him.

Inside, Ethan’s thoughts lit like sparks against stone. Months. You’ve been gone for months. And now you’re back?

The system didn’t hesitate. [Calculations. Adjustments. Upgrades. You’ve grown stronger, host. Strong enough to receive what comes next.]

“What powers?” he asked silently, his lips never moving, his voice only echoing inside his own head.

[Elowen’s. Nature’s breath and decay. The duality of life itself. Healing and siphoning. The authority to draw life from the living earth—or from what has already fallen.]

His pulse jumped hard. Healing alone would have been invaluable. But siphoning? To pull life from one thing to restore another? That was no simple blessing.

That was dangerous. Dangerous because of what it could do to his enemies. Dangerous because of what it could do to him.
