Chapter 414: Why Don’t You Promise Me the Moon?

Lariette couldn’t help but think, how deep Mr. Eastwood’s feelings were for that lady, to remain a bachelor even decades after her betrayal?

That was if she took his story on face value.

Everyone had a complicated story, regardless of the degree. Some were mild, while others might have it harder.

Shaking her head slightly, Lariette focused back on the party. She quietly listened to Nora and Phobe talking with the others while occasionally chiming in.

As for Ruediger, a few male teachers talked about fishing with him. They were delighted to hear that the former also had an interest in this subject.

Lariette and Ruediger exchanged glances a few times. Along the way, he came to her and chatted with her other colleagues.

The party ended without a hitch around five o’clock. All the food was wiped out by the group, leaving no extras. They worked together to tidy the dining table, throw away trash and do other necessary chores.

“Hey! We shouldn’t leave without group photos!”

Before everyone left, Benjamin got everyone to gather for a group photo. Fortunately, the living room was more than spacious for them.

Benjamin had been acting as the party’s photographer. He had accumulated hundreds of photos, including some videos. He planned to send them to the school’s group chat later.

“Look here! The countdown starts!”

After switching on the timer mode, Benjamin hurriedly ran toward the group. Some laughed while the others smiled at the camera. They took a few group photos.

“Bye, Mr. Eastwood.”

“Thank you for today!”

“See you next Monday.”

Lariette and Ruediger left after thanking Mr. Eastwood for his invitation. Nora and Phoebe joked that the couple would be the first to arrive home compared to the others.

The two ladies caught a ride together to come here. Before heading to the lobby, they had already booked another ride through the e-hailing app.

“So sleepy.”

Lariette yawned right after changing her sandals into home slippers. She had already hung her coat near the shoe cabinet. Raising her arms, she stretched them and her waist.

Even though the food was good, hours of mingling with others had drained her social battery. She groaned inwardly once she remembered the stack of exam papers she had to deal with tomorrow.

Just a little more! Then she would be free!

Ruediger simply smiled at the sight of Lariette’s sleepy look. Walking closer to her, he quickly latched onto her like a sticky gum as one of his arms held her waist.

“Gonna take a nap?”

Lariette exhaled, “Yeah, so sleepy. I might stay up late tonight. I wanna mark some of the papers.”

Ruediger raised his brows, understanding what Lariette meant. He remembered the exam papers piling on her desk inside the study.

“Alright. Take a nap,” he patted her back, “We’ve eaten so much. We can have dinner way later. I’ll just make something light, okay?”

“I’m fine with just soup,” she smiled, instinctively leaning closer to him, “If I’m hungry at midnight, I’ll just boil the dumplings.”

Lariette remembered the stock of dumplings left in the freezer. Ruediger often made them in a huge batch. Before they ran out, he would fold new ones.

“Okay. Let’s do that.”

After changing into comfortable loungewear, they rested in the bedroom. The sky had started to darken outside. The temperature dropped to another degree.

Ruediger leaned against the headboard while holding a book. He beckoned Lariette to him. She had just emerged from the washroom, her face slightly wet.

“Won’t you sleep?” she asked. She patted her cheeks a few times, feeling the lingering dampness on her skin.

“I’ll just accompany you. Come here,” he waved his hand again.

Lariette chuckled as she slid onto the bed. She put her head on Ruediger’s thigh. Her eyes drooped lower as she saw the book he was reading.

Then, she was reminded of something.

“Oh, right…” she said, voice low. Tilting her chin up, she looked at him, “Eddy, I need your help. I don’t know what to get for Elsie, Lorrie and Nate. I’ve made a list, but I’m not sure.”

He lowered his gaze, staring at her. His other hand gently played with her earlobe, “For Christmas? You want to get something for them?”

Lariette nodded. She rubbed her sleepy eyes as a yawn escaped her lips, “Also, gifts for Aunt Felle and her family. I can’t possibly bring nothing at all when we visit them.”

This would be Lariette’s first time celebrating New Year with Felicia and her family abroad. Madeline’s mother was always good to her. She hoped to bring something she loved.

Lariette had consulted Madeline, but her friend told her not to worry. Despite that, she wouldn’t do that.

“Alright, let’s talk about it after dinner,” Ruediger agreed. Then, he added jokingly, “Don’t worry. Yours truly can get almost anything you want. I just need to make a few calls.”

She narrowed her eyes, “Why don’t you promise the moon for me?”

“Because my contacts are humans, not aliens,” he replied innocently, “Of course, Edmund needs to do it on my behalf.”

Lariette scoffed. Closing her eyes, she said, “I’ll sleep. Not talking to you anymore.”

Ruediger laughed softly. It didn’t take long for Lariette to fall asleep. He resumed reading while keeping his other hand on her back.

The clock ticked slowly as the sun dipped further below the horizon. After some time, Ruediger put the book down. Lariette was still sleeping. Her breathing was a soft hum in the bedroom.

Bzzt. Bzzt.

Ruediger’s work phone vibrated on the bedside table. Narrowing his eyes, he reached for it. Edmund had sent him messages, most likely related to their work.

Tapping on the notification bar, Ruediger opened the messaging app. Edmund’s texts were visible at the bottom of their previous chats.

[Edmund: Boss, I don’t know to tell you or not. Your brother has been pestering me]

[Edmund: He said your father’s doing something behind your back]

[Edmund: I guess he doesn’t know we’re keeping watch on the old man]

[Edmund: What do you say?]

Ruediger’s eyes gleamed. One corner of his lips curled, revealing a sinister smile.

After much thinking, unfortunately I’ll be on hiatus. Instead of feeling better, my mental fatigue feels much worse and I can’t focus on writing.

I’m reluctant to lose my continuous update streak, but I’m also worried about writing aimlessly just to reach my goal.

Nowadays, writing feels meaningless to me. I’m worried that I’d ruin the story I cherish.

I can’t promise when I’ll be back. But I hope I’ll just be away for two months at most. Please rest assured, I won’t ever abandon any of my stories.

I’m sorry again, and thank you for your continuous support until now 🙂
