Capítulo 454: Chapter 454: Ripples

Chapter 454 – Ripples

“Elira…is here?”

The Ruler demanded, its words sounding more like a self-rhetorical question than anything else.

Around them, the sea of shadows refused to settle. They rustled and churned, like a man writhing in pain on the ground, before surging skyward in a harrowing manner, then crashing back down like thunder.

The whole room seemed to fold into itself, shrinking and expanding, formless like shadow.

The four dragons gritted their teeth, gulping back any kind of complaint as they did their best to lower their heads, their knees still pressed against whatever the ground truly was.

Only the Ruler was unaffected.

The being sat upon a throne unseen by all, save for a formless mass of shadow whirling and twisting upon itself, oval-shaped, with tendrils of smoke-like darkness writhing outward like hundreds of men’s hands trying to grasp something.

But there was something else within that living shadow.

It looked like eyes.

Yet it was too monstrous to be certain they were eyes at all.

“It,” the being spoke, “cannot be.”

Suddenly, everything halted, as if someone had pressed a pause button.

The four dragons exhaled through gritted teeth, a sigh of desperate relief escaping them as they hoped — prayed — that it was the end.

“It cannot be,” the being repeated. “If Elira were here, I would have known of her arrival in this final place. Such a presence would have whispered itself into my existence.”

Its words lingered.

Then the dragons felt it. The piercing gaze of the Ruler pressed directly onto their souls.

They shrank further.

“Or perhaps you dare mock me,” it continued softly, “by spouting lies?”

“N-No!” the Water Dragon blurted out in sheer trepidation. “We would never dare lie before you, O Ruler! Never! Let Soul Rot grasp our spirits if our tongues have spoken falsehoods!”

She slammed her forehead into the ground with devastating force. Her skull cracked on impact, pain ripping through her body like a hammer blow.

She bit down hard, swallowing her scream.

The others followed suit.

“Then, dragons,” the Ruler whispered, almost gently, “perhaps you know where Elira is.”

“Perhaps,” it added, “you do.”

“Y-Yes!” the Fire Dragon exclaimed, pulling a small object from a dragon-shaped ring on his index finger.

The object resembled the stretched jaw of a dragon, its depths glowing with a faint, soft white light.

“With this artifact, my lord, we can determine her location,” the Fire Dragon said rapidly. “All we require is a fragment linked to her existence.”

The Earth Dragon continued, his voice calmer but no less fearful.

“As the first and longest-lived Soul Dragon, many have wondered how and why she was born. The Concept Dragons possess fragments of her, and we managed to obtain one for our search.”

He paused, swallowing hard.

“We can find her,” the Wind Dragon added, bowing her head even lower, blood trickling from her forehead. “We can find her and bring her to you, my lord, if you so wish.”

A suffocating silence followed.

The kind that made even proud dragons squirm like worms trapped in sinking mud.

Their lips dried to sand, tongues scraping uselessly against them. Their breathing slowed, becoming heavy and ragged, as though the very air resisted entering their lungs.

Terror mounted, until the Ruler’s voice thundered once more.

“One chance,” it said. “I will grant you one chance to bring me Elira.”

“You shall bear my authority and my protection. If you succeed, I will grant you what you desire and return you to the Waking World.”

The shadows coiled tightly, hissing like serpents as the final words descended upon them.

“But if you fail, dragons,” it continued, “you shall learn that the Spirit World is not a resting place for pitiful, wretched souls.”

“It is the graveyard of the Universe.”

The four dragons glanced at one another, the looming darkness pressing down upon them — thick, merciless, ever ready to snuff out their souls.

In that instant, Elira ceased to be merely an object of greed of evolution. She became something else entirely. She became their only path to survival and to unimaginable reward.

They met each other’s gazes and saw it clearly how their eyes were hardening, resolve crystallizing with each passing second.

Something deep rooted itself within them.

Elira would be theirs.

No matter what.

No matter how.

She would be seized and she would be their ticket to glory.

…

The event of Noah’s creation of a bloodline did not go unnoticed, at least not completely as one would think.

Standing in the deep of nothingness, the Son of Emptiness was cocking his head from one side to the other, his two pools of nothingness that served as eyes slightly puzzled.

He slowly raised his hand, palm facing skyward, clenched it tightly, causing a burst of invisible energy to thunder through the nothingness, energy enough to obliterate millions of Noahs in a span shorter than his fastest thoughts.

Yet the Son’s eyebrows were still knitted together. He unfolded back his fist, letting his arm swing beside his side.

He lifted his head next overhead, “How strange.” He whispered, “Something is wrong. What is it? I do not know, but something related to me is deeply, phenomenally wrong.”

“I can feel it inside my non-existence. Am I being targeted? No, it’s a different kind of target.”

He tilted his head, looking deep into the voids, “Is it them? Unlikely. The only way for them to threaten me is for all of them to work together. Which is impossible.”

Then what was going on?

His thoughts churned with impossible speed, trying to cover all kinds of probability, even those that seemed to be as impossible as anything.

Slowly, his thoughts led him to the Perfected Reality, then to the three beings—!

“Why, pray tell, old friend, are you thinking about me?”

The Son of Emptiness’s thoughts halted abruptly at the sound of the voice, a faint smile creeping at the edge of his lips.

“Now, definitely, something is wrong.” He said, “If even Gaia decided to talk to me first.”

“Wrong?” Gaia grated, “The only wrong thing here is you poking at me and your actions by giving your power to three of my children.”

“I have stayed silent long enough, Son. What is your goal?”

“My goal is to protect you, Gaia.” He said, “To protect you against those. Not because I wish to, but you being killed means exposing ourselves even more.”

“How can these pitiful things help you in that task then?”

“That’s a matter not meant for you to know.” The Son retorted.

“That’s when you are deeply mistaken, then.” Gaia’s voice went colder, “You are using my children. You are using my creation for your glorious goal of saving me. How noble of you! But I have the right to know what is happening to them and what will happen to them.”

The Son paused, then, “Will Eternal, aren’t you old enough now to know? Some knowledge is better left unknown. You are unaware of the scale of what wishes to swallow you down. But I am aware.”

“Do you know how long this battle has been going on?” He said, then answered himself, “You don’t, Gaia. And I have been here protecting you when you were nothing but a seed of wish from one of The Old.”

“Did I fail?”

Gaia found herself robbed of words. She came here in an attempt to know what the goal of the Son was, but she gained nothing except a sharp realization of who she was facing.

She was facing someone or something older than even her, a thing that had been with her since she was unaware of what she was meant to be.

Suddenly, a cold fear for her son began to emerge inside her being.

In her damned love for Noah, she helped him do something he shouldn’t have done.

Today Will Eternal had acted, spoke to the Son, because she felt danger, not towards her, but towards the one she reluctantly cared for.

The Son of Emptiness had sensed something wrong, and for one at such a level of power, a feeling of wrongness was one they would do all to find why and how.

Especially a being like the Son.

She pursed her lips, unaware of what to say.

Sensing her silence, the Son wanted to speak again, but found himself closing his mouth as eyes bigger than universes began to glow deep inside the void.

He made an irritated clicking sound with his tongue and straightened himself.

“What must be done will be done.” The Son said at last, “And do not forget, Gaia.”

“Power begets Power. That’s the reason you are being attacked. That’s the reason I am here. That will be the reason those three will step into this stage.”

He said, then popped his neck,

“Now let’s begin, my dear friends. Another round? Okay, okay, okay! Let’s make it bloody quick today!”

“Yellow, today I shall destroy your bloody fragmented self. Wise, today your eyes will be gouged out, they disgust me!”

The Son of Emptiness cackled, then jolted into action.

Gaia retreated her consciousness back to her dwelling, her mind playing multiple scenarios to know how…

How would she help her son avoid the retribution of the Son of Emptiness.
