Chapter 424 – The Mother
Shadeva watched with a thin smile as the lightning wrapped around her stunning frame, protecting her.
Soon, more of her children began to appear all around the domain of lightning, encircling the Old Lady in a tight killing formation.
The Origin of Lightning was flabbergasted, her sizzling eyes looking around with astonishment.
Just moments ago they were playing an interesting game and speaking casually. But then it was as if her own power was now turned against her…
What was happening?
Old Lightning didn’t seem aware of what she had said or why Shadeva was angry, despite the motherly smile plastered on her face.
She was angry for many things. But she was mostly angry because of how underestimated they were. To the rest of the universe, they were nothing of concern.
Shadeva knew more than anyone that they still had a long way to go before they could confidently claim that none could threaten them inside the universe… but it hurt her very pride to be looked down upon.
The Elysiari bloodline was revolting, demanding retribution.
So, there was no point in talking about how the Elysiari, too, were a fearsome bunch.
No.
What she needed to do was show her. To act in a way that reflected their new faction so that everyone would know.
And what was the characteristic of their faction?
It was simple.
“No more bargaining or even diplomacy talks, old lady.” Shadeva said, pointing a finger at Old Lightning,
“Now, you shall obey willingly or unwillingly. And in the second case, you will be captured and become a slave.”
“Now tell me your answer. You have 5 seconds.” She demanded, as she sat on a throne made of the flesh of her children, her Elysiari form coupled with Vael language in full display.
The Origin of Lightning felt a lethal danger, and she felt it very clearly. She swept her eyes around and saw how even lightning was slowly forming human shapes to protect Shadeva.
It was like the whole universe was against her because she was targeting one crucial aspect of life.
That one being that gave birth.
The only being that could bear the weight of two beating hearts inside her, even while being nothing but a wretched mortal.
Lightning was targeting something made sacred by existence itself.
She was targeting The Mother.
And no one targets The Mother.
That day, Lightning became painfully aware of that truth. But it was far too late.
“Time’s up.” Shadeva said, then crossed her legs atop each other, “My children…”
Lightning widened her eyes, “No! I acc—!”
“You have taken too much time to answer.” Shadeva cut her mercilessly, “I don’t care, old lady.”
She ordered next:
“Attack.”
Lightning cursed her big mouth for putting her in that situation as she watched the whole expanse of lightning become filled with enemies wanting to slaughter her.
She was blinded by them.
She cursed once more, and the attacks landed from all directions, followed by the faithful shout of the children echoing all around…
“We heard, we obey, Mother.”
…
In another corner of the universe, the mother-daughter duo, Sophie and Emily, were currently on their way, searching for the Origin they had been tasked to deal with.
The Origin of Death.
The very name of that Origin made the two somehow apprehensive. But that was just that, apprehension.
They personally believed they had the necessary strength and will to go against it.
And if not, then they would just have to do all they could and leave the rest to Noah.
That was what Emily was thinking. But Sophie didn’t quite agree with the Elysiari of Plasma.
“We will succeed by ourselves, Mother.” Sophie said strongly, glaring at her mother with crimson lightning eyes, “We don’t need each time the help of Noah.”
Emily rolled her eyes. This had been their conversation since the moment they departed. She was getting tired of explaining the same thing to her daughter over and over again.
She sighed and, without bothering to look at her, “I understand your thoughts and I agree with them.” She began by acknowledging her, then…
“the only thing I said is that if the fight becomes hopeless, there is no need to endanger our lives further by acting proud.”
She shrugged, “Pride is an illusion, daughter. And you have too much of it inside you. It will cause you many problems if you don’t keep it in check.”
“But if you go to the fight with this mentality, Mother,” Sophie insisted, “Then it will be easy for you to abandon, knowing that Noah will not let you die. And for me, that is what illusion is.”
“Noah needs solid anchors for his rise to the top. He doesn’t need foundations made of clay that any ordeal could shatter easily.”
Here, her temper flared, lightning dancing inside her mouth,
“Damn it, Mother! We are Vaelgrim too! We can kill or capture a bloody Origin by ourselves!”
Emily finally spared her daughter a hard glance, “Did you just curse me?”
Sophie realized her words and plastered her hand over her mouth, “A mistake!” she defended herself.
Emily held her gaze, then sighed and let the matter sink away. She focused on the path in front of her once more, “You won’t change your mind, will you?”
“I won’t, Mother.”
“Fine.” She scowled in irritation, “I will humor you and follow your lead this time.”
Sophie beamed before nodding her head with determination, “We will prevail, Mother!”
Emily scoffed, “We better. We better, daughter.”
“How—!”
“Now stay silent. I didn’t forget the curse just now.”
“I already said sorry.”
“You didn’t, matter of fact.”
“I… am sorry?”
“Too late.”
The mother and daughter continued their talk while searching at the same time. They had been given this information by their three Origin children and already they could feel it.
The rotting stench of death.
They were close.
…
“Well, well, well,” Noah whispered, looking at his hands drenched in black blood. He began to count,
“How many did I kill already? One, two, three… seven hundreds?”
He grinned.
“I have killed around seven hundreds void beasts. And only after that did I finally attract your attention.”
He slowly raised his head and looked at the being in front of him. Noah’s smile widened as he felt the power radiating from him.
Unconsciously, a cold sweat trickled down his spine.
“You are quite a difficult one.” Noah murmured, then added, almost playfully, “Are you the famous — or maybe infamous — Void Lord?” He asked, cleaning his hands with a lazy swipe.
The Void Lord didn’t answer. Instead, he looked deep into Noah, wondering how this creature had the aura of a powerful void beast without being one.
It was strange, he thought.
But he didn’t dwell on it for too long, for his time was scarce and he had matters to attend to.
“Work on my behalf.” The Void Lord simply said. It sounded more like a command than anything else.
Noah tilted his head, “What if I am not very fond of that idea?”
“You die.” He answered instantly.
“Quite harsh. Can we maybe negotiate a lighter punishment?”
“Are you mocking me, strange being?” The Void Lord growled.
Noah shrugged, “I don’t mock people. But tell me, do you think you can kill me?” He asked, putting his hands in his pockets.
The Void Lord’s monstrous face twisted into a huge grin. With that, an overwhelming dark void aura began to surround Noah.
“You doubt?”
Noah rolled his shoulders, “Doubt is a small word. But yes, of course, I doubt.”
He cracked his neck, then, “But let’s first answer a question before we get to the part where I shall show you why I doubt your statement.”
He stared at the monster in front of him,
“Are you the holder of the Void Origin?”
“That’s what you are looking for?” Void answered back, the void around them beginning to pull inward and rapidly flow toward him.
“What if I do have it?”
Noah only smiled.
“Then I have to take it from you. My wife wants it, after all.”
There was a tense silence after his answer, one that was soon shattered by the howling of the void and the calamitous attack of the Void Lord.
