Capítulo 1420: Prince Fireborne
The palace courtyard was lush and meticulously maintained.
Manicured lawns stretched between stone pathways, dotted with flowering shrubs and carefully pruned trees. Ivy climbed along pale stone walls, while fountains at the center and corners of the courtyard trickled softly.
Benches and shaded alcoves were arranged beneath tall canopies of green, offering quiet places for rest and conversation. The air was cool and clean, carrying the scent of flowers and fresh grass.
Cliffton guided Nilrem along the stone path, leading him to the gazebo nestled by a small pond in the distance.
“My Lord, I hope you don’t take offence when I say this,” Cliffton began, feeling slightly nervous and awkward. “There are some etiquettes that one must follow when meeting royalty.”
Nilrem curled his mustache and chuckled lightly. “Go ahead, young man. I don’t mind at all.”
Cliffton breathed a sigh of relief. “Thank you for your understanding.”
He paused for a moment, then continued:
“You may only address him as ‘Your Highness’ or ‘My Prince’ until invited otherwise. Please do not speak first unless spoken to. No sudden movements. No casual slouching. Please, maintain a composed posture. And no physical contact, unless explicitly offered a handshake.
“As for conversation etiquette, please avoid slang or excessive familiarity. The Prince values clarity, and evasiveness might be taken as an insult. Please do not interrupt him, and even disagreement should be phrased respectfully. And lastly, please avoid sensitive topics, unless, of course, invited.”
Cliffton turned to the elderly magus and smiled, “That will be all, my lord—”
His words, however, got caught in his throat when he saw Nilrem casually drinking wine from a bottle.
“My lord!” Cliffton hissed in a suppressed voice. “Please, don’t do that!”
“Right. I forgot.” Nilrem put away the bottle and gave a light burp.
On the other hand, Cliffton couldn’t help but begin to panic. Noticing that, Nilrem placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder and charmingly smiled.
“Relax,” he said. “I’ll be on my best behavior.”
Cliffton’s lips twitched. He could only hope…
The pair soon arrived at their destination.
Under the shade of the white marble gazebo, the Prince sat at ease as pretty female servants attended to him. They moved quietly, offering tea, adjusting cushions, and arranging trays of fruits and delicacies on the low table.
The Prince himself cut an impressive figure. Long red hair fell neatly down his back, catching the morning light as it stirred gently in the breeze. His features were sharp and well-defined. He was handsome in a composed, aristocratic way rather than an ostentatious one.
He wore flowing white robes, finely tailored and embroidered with subtle patterns that spoke of wealth and lineage without excess. Against the greenery of the courtyard, his attire and bearing made him unmistakably regal.
When Adam’s gaze settled upon this man, he was momentarily taken aback.
He looks just like Anna! He thought to himself.
If I didn’t know any better, I’d think they were twins.
“Your Highness,” Cliffton said with a respectful bow.
“May I present Magus Nilrem, a wandering scholar and chronicler of wonders, recently arrived in Amberfall at Duke Quinn’s recommendation.”
Marlow Fireborne set the cup down on the low table, then glanced at the elderly Magus with a faint, welcoming smile.
Nilrem took a step forward, placed a hand on his chest, and gave a light bow. He was pretending to be a Mana Vortex Magus, one of equal arcane standing as the Prince. He avoided excessive deference, striking a careful balance.
He was neither a subject nor a subordinate, and his gesture reflected that distinction.
“Your Highness, it seems fate has been kind to a wandering Magus today.”
Marlow’s smile widened ever so slightly. “Magus Nilrem, please take a seat. When Duke Quinn told me that he was hosting a guest who had traveled the world, I found myself eager to meet you.”
Although Nilrem had a light smile on his face, displaying that he was flattered to meet Ignisra’s royalty, inwardly, Adam couldn’t help but think to himself:
Hehe, cheeky bastard! Eager to meet me? Weren’t you eager to chop my head if I was found to be a Haynam spy?
Cliffton bowed and took his leave. Meanwhile, Nilrem took a seat across from the Prince.
Marlow glanced at the elderly man’s bright and colorful clothes and suppressed a chuckle. He then asked with a smile, “Would you like some tea, Magus Nilrem? Or perhaps… some wine?”
Nilrem arched an eyebrow and said, “If it is okay with you, My Prince, then I’d like to have some wine. Tea is a little too mild for me.”
The Prince chuckled and instructed the servant to serve the elderly man a goblet of fine wine.
Once the introductions were out of the way, he looked at Nilrem and asked, “So what brings you to Amberfall?”
“Oh, you know, work.” Nilrem took a sip of wine and said, “Believe it or not, for someone as well-travelled as myself, this is my first time in Europa. I intend to record the wonders of this beautiful place and, in time, publish a book.”
“Interesting,” Marlow softly said. “Have you published books before?”
“Of course!” Nilrem’s eyes lit up. It was as if he was waiting for the man to ask him that question.
One of the rings around his fingers lit up faintly, and the next moment, a book bound in dark leather appeared in his hand.
“I’ve published three books already,” Nilrem replied cheerfully. “They chronicle my travels through Nahua, Ulier, and Mabi. This one here is my latest book.”
He tapped the journal lightly. “It hasn’t been officially published yet, so you’d be the first to read it! Well, aside from me, of course. Hohoho!”
Marlow’s interest was piqued. He curiously started to read the book, titled:
Nilrem’s Guide to Yen-Lu.
It wasn’t long before he found himself fully absorbed in the book. It was nothing like the dry travel accounts penned by court scribes.
Instead, Nilrem’s work read like a living tale, with the author himself as the central character, who remained in the shadows as a spectator and wandered through the strange and mystical lands of the East.
“Fascinating!” Marlow said with genuine admiration. “So the strongest young Magi of Yen-Lu are honored with epithets such as Dragons and Phoenixes.”
He turned to Nilrem, his eyes sparkling with curiosity. “And this Venom Dragon you mention is the strongest Mana Vortex Magus on the continent. From the way you describe him with such familiarity, may I assume the two of you were acquainted?”
“Well…” Nilrem’s lips curled into a reminiscent smile. “Something like that.”
Marlow questioned him about the most powerful figures in Yen-Lu, such as the heads of the Nine Great Sects and Clans, the organizations of the Unorthodox Faction, and even the Heavenly Demon. Nilrem satisfied his curiosity with carefully crafted answers.
The conversation gradually shifted to Nilrem’s travels in Ulier. The elderly Magus spoke at great length, and before long, he even presented the Prince a copy of his work, Nilrem’s Guide to Ulier.
At last, Marlow posed the question he had been holding back. His expression remained casual when he asked:
“So, Magus Nilrem, since you’ve spent such a long time in the Acadian Empire, I wonder if you could tell me more about the Dark King?”
Greatest Legacy of the Magus Universe turns 2 today! I’m grateful to you all who have continued to support me over the past two years. Thank you so very much! You guys are the best!
