Chapter 1311: Bloody Message

The Tsuitsui Clan was the overlord of the Yongchan Province, and their seat of power was the capital of the province, Yongdu City.

Their destination was still months away from Yuanshi City.

Moreover, Jiuli Haven fell on the way. It was the headquarters of the Qingyun Bang. That was the reason why Ragged Sage Bei was traveling with them.

Just like the monks of Jingfa Sect, the beggars of Qingyun Bang did not hold any worldly possessions. But the glaring difference between them was… the former presented themselves better.

Knowing that the carriage would reek, Reika wisely chose to travel in a separate carriage along with the other elders.

Meanwhile, Goro, Adam, and Ragged Sage Bei traveled together.

“Old Man Bei.” Goro rubbed his nose involuntarily and asked, “When was the last time you took a shower?”

“Hmm?” The elderly beggar stroked his chin. “Just this morning. Why do you ask?”

Goro’s lips twitched. “O-oh, I see. Forget I asked.”

Adam burst into laughter.

This was already the seventh time since they’d gotten inside the carriage.

Ragged Sage Bei cast an incredulous gaze at him and couldn’t help but ask, “You sure are a strange fellow, Master Ao. Have you always been like this?”

“Auhh.” Adam nodded.

There was a lot Ragged Sage Bei wanted to ask Adam, but the communication barrier prevented him from doing so. There was hardly anything he could glean from asking dichotomous questions.

He had wanted to meet Adam and learn more about him, so that he could enrich the sect’s information on him. But unfortunately, he was in for a great disappointment.

“Haaa…” He looked out of the window, sighing heavily.

“By the way, Old Man Bei,” Goro called out, his tone oddly solemn. “What does the Qingyun Bang know about the Heavenly Demon?”

Ragged Sage Bei’s expression turned grim. He turned to the Venom Dragon and asked, “How much do you know about Lao Ren’s prophecy?”

Adam’s heart sank. He leaned back in the seat, pretending not to care all that much. But he was raptly paying attention to the conversation.

“As much as the next person, I suppose.” Goro shrugged. “Why?”

Ragged Sage Bei remained silent for a moment, then began. “One of Lao Ren’s prophecies talks about the Ghost of Hoshigane.”

“Ghost of Hoshigane?” Goro frowned. “As in… Mount Hoshigane?”

“Indeed.” The elderly beggar nodded.

He paused for a moment, then continued in a solemn voice:

“The prophecy speaks of a man who would one day descend Mount Hoshigane. No one would see him climb, and no one would know his name. He would appear out of nowhere like a… ghost.”

Goro scoffed. “So the Heavenly Demon is a ghost?”

However, the beggar was serious. He continued, “Lao Ren had prophesied two things about this man. First, he would be an outsider, one not born in our lands. Second, his arrival would herald the beginning of great change across our realm.”

Goro’s expression turned dark. “You’re saying… the Heavenly Demon is an outsider?”

“Who knows?” The beggar shrugged. “But if you see the places he’s been and compare them with the prophecy of Lao Ren, then a lot of things would begin to make sense, don’t you think?”

Goro slipped into deep thought. He stroked his chin and murmured, “They say that the Heavenly Demon butchered a hundred men outside Ichigane Town. Ichigane sits at the base of Mount Hoshigane…”

“Old Man Bei, could this really be true?” He couldn’t help but ask.

“I don’t see why not?” The beggar shrugged once more. “Most of Lao Ren’s prophecies have come to pass. With startling accuracy, I might add. I believe that it’s very likely that the Heavenly Demon is none other than the Ghost of Hoshigane.”

His eyes narrowed, and he added in a low voice, “But the question remains… what is his purpose?”

“Why would this outsider sow discord in our lands?” Goro asked with a dark frown on his face.

Ragged Sage Bei hesitated for a while, then said, “I believe he never meant to…”

“What?” Goro’s frown deepened.

The beggar thought for a moment, then said, “Based on the intel reports, the Heavenly Demon was attacked outside Ichigane by those hundred men led by Tensei Arakuro. It wasn’t the other way around. The way I see it, this man was only defending himself.”

Goro scoffed. “So then what about the murder in Yuanshi?”

Ragged Sage Bei’s gaze involuntarily shifted to Adam. His lips curled into a smile, and he said, “Actually, for a brief time, I had thought that Master Ao was the Heavenly Demon.”

Adam’s heart turned cold.

But he still pretended to be confused. “Auhh?”

“I thought so too,” Goro added. “But that’s not the case. I can assure you that.”

“Hoho, I know, I know.” The beggar chuckled. “I know that Master Ao isn’t him. After all, while the Heavenly Demon was slaughtering the Magi of the Arakuro Clan, Ao was within Yuanshi.”

Goro nodded. He then changed the subject. “So you’re saying that the Arakuro Clan has only themselves to blame?”

“What else?” The elderly beggar sneered. “If it wasn’t for Tensei Arakuro’s greed, such a thing would have never come to pass. And even the subsequent killings, one could say that the Heavenly Demon was only defending himself from the wrath of the Arakuro Clan.”

As the conversation continued, Adam couldn’t help but be secretly relieved.

Thank goodness I passed on the Blades of Fulgrim to that guy, he thought to himself.

Because of that simple decision, he had severed all connections between the Heavenly Demon and himself.

“…Oh, by the way, I’m sure you didn’t know this,” said the elderly beggar. “But a few days ago, our sect’s spies in Taketsu City sent back an interesting report.”

“Oh?” Goro was intrigued.

And so was Adam.

Ragged Sage Bei muttered in a low voice, “They said that the Arakuro Clan had sent fifteen Mana Vortex Magi after the Heavenly Demon had butchered their men in Yuanshi. However, out of the fifteen, he killed only fourteen of them.”

“What about the last man?” Goro asked curiously.

“The Heavenly Demon spared that man so that he could send the Arakuro Clan a bloody message,” the elderly beggar answered.

“What message?” Goro’s eyes narrowed.

Ragged Sage Bei paused for a moment, then said in an even voice:

“That message… came in the form of fourteen severed heads.”
