Chapter 1309: Declaration of War
In a vast chamber within the Arcane Alliance’s Headquarters, all the delegations from the organizations that made up the Arcane Alliance had gathered.
At the center, seated at the round table, were the representatives of the Nine Great Sects and Clans. Behind them, seated all throughout the chamber, were the representatives of the countless other smaller sects and clans.
On this day, they had all gathered to discuss a very important topic, one that involved the future of Yen-Lu. Needless to say, the atmosphere was tense and heavy.
The Grand Elder of the Arakuro Clan had a grim look on his face. Rising to his feet, he unfurled the jade scroll and solemnly recited the Patriarch’s decree.
“Hearken, members of the Arcane Alliance,” he began.
“By the authority vested in me by the Patriarch and by the rites of our forefeathers, I set forth this solemn declaration:
“For the wanton slaughter of our kin, for the subversion of peace, and the deliberate hand that set besmirched the Arakuro Clan, we hold one man… this vile murderer… and those who shelter him, responsible.
“Let it be known throughout Yen-Lu and to every province under the Arcane Alliance, we shall pursue justice beyond our borders. We will follow this killer into the very heart of the lands held by the Unorthodox Faction. Where he hides, there shall we hunt. Where he spreads corruption, there shall we strike.
“This is not a quarrel of greed, not a seizure of spoils. It is a binding duty to avenge our fallen, to uphold the sanctity of the Arakuro Clan, and to ensure that no one may rend our order with impunity. We shall marshal our forces and enact every lawful measure to see this duty fulfilled.
“Whether others choose to stand alongside us or remain spectators matters little to our Arakuro Clan. We do not compel allegiance, nor do we beg for aid. But hear this clearly… we shall not remain silent. Our honor has been stained, and honor demands redress.
“Thus we march! Not in defiance of the Arcane Alliance, but in fulfillment of our clan’s sacred charge. Let the heavens bear witness. The Arakuro Clan shall see justice done!”
Bam!
The Grand Elder slammed the jade scroll on the table. Then he scanned the faces of those sitting at the round table.
He then silently turned around and left. The other elders of his clan followed behind him, their faces filled with suppressed wrath. Soon, they had left the grand chamber, leaving behind an even more tense atmosphere.
Although the Grand Elder of the Arakuro Clan claimed that they did not care if the others allied with them or remained spectators, the truth was that the other factions of the Arcane Alliance would have no choice but to join the battle eventually.
If the Arakuro Clan invaded the territories of the Unorthodox Faction, then many organizations within that faction would surely counterattack.
At that point, how could the rest of the members of the Arcane Alliance sit still?
Thus, it only seemed on the surface that the Arakuro Clan was bravely going to face the entirety of the Unorthodox Faction. But the truth was—and even the Patriarch of the Arakuro Clan knew this—that the rest of the factions in the Arcane Alliance would be following behind them into battle sooner or later.
After the Grand Elder made his declaration, none of the other people gathered in the chamber objected. They didn’t ask him to stop and think things through, nor did they ask him if his clan was being selfish. That would be hypocritical, after all.
If it were any other sect or clan instead of the Arakuro Clan, would they have done things differently?
Twenty-three of their Mana Vortex-level Elders had been killed!
The Arakuro Clan’s actions were completely justified. No one could tell them otherwise.
“Amitabha, it seems darkness has risen once more.”
Seated at the round table, a monk with a gentle appearance voiced his opinion. This was the Grand Elder of the Jingfa Sect.
“Twenty-three Mana Vortex Magi…” An elderly man with sharp facial features muttered as he stroked his beard. This was the Grand Elder of the Yunhai Sect.
“This vile criminal has dealt a heavy blow to the Arakuro Clan,” he continued. “I don’t understand. Has the Arakuro Clan stopped producing capable Magi? Or is this criminal simply that good?”
An odd character, who looked completely out of place, suddenly scoffed. “Arakuro Clan producing mediocre Magi?”
This was the Grand Elder of the Qingyun Bang. While others were dressed in opulent clothes, this elderly man looked like a… beggar.
“It would appear that this criminal is highly capable,” he added. “I’ve read reports about this man slaying a hundred men all on his own just outside Ichigan Town!”
Everyone inside the chamber gasped in surprise. No one doubted the old beggar’s words. After all, the Qingyun Bang was a sect that dealt primarily in information. All of its disciples were beggars who roamed the streets, their eyes and ears open for every little piece of intel.
“Do we know this man’s exact location?” The Princess of Tsuitsui Clan, Reika Tsuitsui, asked with a solemn look on her face. Beside her, Goro was idly looking at the ceiling, seemingly bored out of his mind.
A bald old man with intimidating facial features answered, “According to the Arakuro Clan, this man is deep within the territories of the Unorthodox Faction. More specifically, he seems to be in the region ruled by Qinglin Zhai.”
This was the Grand Elder of the Moriyama Clan.
Seated right beside him, the Grand Elder of the Nakamura Clan muttered in a grim voice, “There have been warriors in the past who butchered Magi of prominent organizations to make a name for themselves. But I doubt something like this has ever happened before.”
Bai Xun, the Sword Dragon representing the Baihua Sect, chimed in, “Slaughtering more than twenty Mana Vortex Magi from the Arakuro Clan is not just an insult to the clan, but to us, the Arcane Alliance!”
Some of the people seated at the table silently nodded, their expression dark and grim.
Suddenly, Goro Tsuitsui spoke up, “What’s the big deal about this guy? I am very eager to test his skills.”
His lips curled into a grin as he looked toward the Grand Elder of the Jingfa Sect.
“Say, Ragged Sage Bei,” he began. “Have you found out this man’s identity?”
“We don’t know his true identity yet,” Ragged Sage Bei shook his head. “All we know is that he wears a mask and wields flaming twin blades.”
He paused for a moment, then added, “Oh, and one more thing. After slaying twenty-three Magi from the Arakuro Clan, as well as a hundred men outside Ichigane Town, our Magus world has already given him an epithet.”
Similar to Dragons and Phoenixes, epithets were given to exceptional warriors who had made a name for themselves in the Magus world of Yen-Lu.
“Oh?” Goro Tsuitsui was intrigued. “Do tell.”
Ragged Sage Bei inhaled deeply. Then he muttered in a solemn voice:
“They’re calling him the Heavenly Demon!”
