Chapter 1262: Turbulent Changes

“Uh, Captain, this is the man here,” said the guard in an awkward manner.

There was a small group of guards gathered by the city gates, all of them strangely looking at Adam, who stood by his stallion, gently patting him.

The captain of the guards, a Mana Liquefaction Magus, wore white robes that had the insignia of a five-petaled plum blossom flower emblazoned on them.

This middle-aged man sported a neatly-trimmed beard and had tied his long brown hair into a top knot. He gazed at Adam with a deep frown.

“So, he’s a mute?” He asked.

“Uhm, yes.” The other guard nodded. “He also seems to be blind, captain.”

The frown on the captain’s face deepened. “Hey, you!”

Adam tilted his head. “Auh?”

“Yes, you!” The captain walked towards him, an intimidating expression on his face. “Undo that cloth on your head. Let me see your face.”

Adam deeply looked at the captain, trying his best to suppress the laughter that was about to spill out of his mouth. He then pointed at a more secluded corner, near the wall.

“Auh,” he said before walking there and beginning to undo the black cloth.

The captain’s eyes narrowed. If Adam tried anything funny, he wouldn’t hesitate to take action. One reason for the deep mistrust was that Adam was an unknown figure who was also concealing his face.

But the main reason was… the Captain could not sense Adam’s strength at all. It was as if the man was a mortal with no mana coursing through his veins.

Almost a minute later, when Adam untied the black cloth wrapped around his face and showed it only to the captain of the guards, the latter shuddered in horror.

“P-put it back on! Put it back on!” he blurted out.

“Auh…” Adam nodded helplessly.

Meanwhile, the captain walked to the group of guards, his back drenched in cold sweat. Now, he felt utterly terrible about forcing Adam to undo the cloth around his head.

He walked to the guard who initially interrogated Adam, then slapped him!

“You idiot, how can you be so careless?” he roared.

He pointed at Adam, who was tying the cloth around his face in a despondent manner, and continued, “That poor man… not only is he a mute, but he’s also blind! Clearly, he’s gone through a lot! Show some manners!”

“Y-yes, captain!” The guard seemed like he was about to cry.

“Jot down his name in the register and allow his entry, damn it!” The second those words escaped his lips, the captain quickly strode away.

It seemed that the man looked more terrified of Adam’s appearance than feeling pity for him. It was clear that he would be haunted by nightmares that night.

The guard, who had just been slapped, walked up to Adam with a swollen right cheek and handed him a book and a quill.

“There,” he began. “Write your name and your purpose of visit on the register. Oh, and you can’t ride your horse inside the city. Find a suitable place for your steed to rest.”

After covering his face, Adam put on the hood of the Stealth Cloak. He walked over to the guard and muttered:

“Auh?”

The guard’s lips twitched. “N-never mind. I forgot you’re blind. Wait, could you be deaf as well? Forget it, I’ll put your name down as Auh, I suppose. You may enter. And remember, guards are patrolling the city twenty-four-seven. If you disturb the peace, we will throw you out.”

“Auhh!” Adam smiled happily.

With that said, he walked towards his horse, and then together, they entered deeper into the city.

The youth couldn’t believe how easy everything had been. Once he was far away from the city gates, he inhaled deeply and then…

He laughed.

***

The Baihua Sect sat high atop the tallest peak overlooking Jingyun City.

Layers of tiled roofs and white stone halls spread across the mountainside, linked by narrow paths and arched bridges. Mists drifted between the buildings, and the sound of flowing water echoed faintly from hidden streams.

Beneath a plum blossom tree in full bloom, an elderly man stood alone, gazing at his disciples who were practicing sword arts in the near distance.

The man wore white robes with the insignia of the Baihua Sect, a five-petaled plum blossom flower. He had a gentle demeanor and kind eyes as he smiled, watching his disciples improve day after day.

Suddenly, his eyes narrowed.

A moment later, the space beside him twisted, and a raven flew out of it, carrying a small piece of rolled parchment tied around its leg.

The elderly man’s eyes flashed with a peculiar light.

A message from someone in the Shadow Sect? He wondered.

He retrieved the letter, then patted the raven on the head. Following that, the bird flew back into the portal and disappeared.

The elderly man inconspicuously scanned his surroundings first, then opened the letter.

Soon, his eyes narrowed further.

It’s from Hisaki, he thought to himself in slight surprise.

How long has it been since I heard from—

His thoughts came to an abrupt halt when he read the contents of his message. Even at his age, after experiencing the myriad wonders this world had to offer, he couldn’t help but prevent his eyes from turning wide.

The Ghost?! Impossible!

And the Sect Master has instructed me to secretly observe this man who might pass through the city?

Those were the instructions in the letter. It also contained descriptions about Adam, mainly about him being an outsider, not being able to speak the local language, and having severe burn marks all throughout his body.

The elderly man burnt the letter after reading it. His gaze turned distant as he watched the sun dip below the horizon, dyeing the sky in shades of purple and orange.

Is it finally happening? He thought to himself with a grim look on his face.

After staying in the shadows for ages, pulling strings from behind the curtain, and secretly protecting these lands from evil influences…

Is it finally time for our Shadow Sect to step into the light?

He took a deep breath, trying to contain the tumultuous waves rising within his heart. The mystical lands of Yen-Lu would go through a period of turbulent changes, and at the center of it all was one man…

The Ghost.

Pushing away these thoughts to the back of his mind, he walked towards his disciples. With a gentle smile on his face, he asked them:

“Shall we head down to the city tomorrow?”
