Chapter 1261: Only Humans and Beasts
Crack!
Adam snapped a bandit’s neck in two, then tossed him to the side.
“That’s strange,” he murmured. “It’s not even funny anymore.”
All around him, there were over a dozen corpses strewn. This group of bandits had ambushed him, but in the end, they had met their doom.
These men were all at the Mana Liquefaction Rank. That was why they were so confident in taking down Adam, who was one rank above them.
“Gege? Gege?” The mimic strapped to the youth’s back chirped eagerly.
“Huh?” Adam turned his head in a daze, then unstrapped the rucksack bag before tossing it behind him. “Yeah, go ahead. You know the drill. Eat the corpse, store the money.”
“Gege! Gege!” The mimic happily obliged.
A dirt road cut through the land, with a dense forest on one side and yellow grasslands on the other. Adam walked to a nearby boulder and sat down, his senses fixed on the corpses scattered along the path.
The wind rustled through the trees and dry grass as he observed in silence, lost in thought.
“How strange,” he murmured. “This is already the fifth time I’ve been attacked by bandits since I left Ichigane. Looks like these men from the unorthodox faction are scattered all throughout the lands.”
Sensing the mimic digging through the corpses with great relish, the madman couldn’t help but grin widely.
The mimic had great defense capabilities, comparable to a Mana Liquefaction Magus. However, aside from the way it had tried to eat Adam, it had no other means to attack. The creature had great utility purposes, though.
“I wonder how it’ll advance to the next rank? Is it by eating? Or is it going to advance with the passage of time like most fantastical beasts?”
The next moment, his grin vanished. “Uh, what was I thinking before? Damn these voices!”
A few moments later, he grinned again. “That’s right! These unorthodox Magi are everywhere. I think I know why that is…”
There was something else Adam had noticed in his travels.
Apart from humans, he had seen no other species on this continent. Forget the elves, dwarves, and gnomes; he hadn’t even seen any orcs, goblins, trolls, or ogres.
On this great continent, there were only humans. Of course, there were powerful beasts like the Kitsune, but they resided in secluded regions.
“It’s strange how there aren’t any other members of the four great races apart from humans?” Adam mumbled, stroking his chin.
“Did these people slaughter the rest of the races? That won’t be surprising. These people are quite xenophobic. Yeah, they might as well be racists. How very strange…”
“Gege! Gege!” The mimic walked on its tiny legs and arrived before Adam, jumping in joy.
“You done?”
“Gege!”
“Alright, did you store the money safely?” Adam rose to his feet.
“Gege! Gege!” The mimic chirped, nimbly climbing Adam’s legs, then strapping itself across his back.
“Good boy,” the madman chuckled.
Then, he walked to the majestic-looking black stallion that he had “borrowed” from one of the bandit leaders. It wasn’t a magical beast, but it was quite powerful and convenient for long travels.
Mounting the horse, he urged it to move forward.
“Alright, let’s get going,” he said with a wide grin. “We should reach the heart of Yunxi Province in another two weeks!”
***
Two weeks later,
As Adam rode the horse along the dusty road, the distant outline of Jingyun City came into view.
Jingyun City was the capital of the Yunxi Province, and was ruled by the Baihua Sect, one of the nine great sects and clans.
Stone walls rose against the horizon, and the tiered roofs of pagodas jutted above them, their curved edges catching the light of the setting sun.
Banners fluttered faintly in the wind, and a faint haze hung over the city, giving it a violet tint. Beyond the towering city gates, there were old wooden buildings packed closely together, smoke trails rising from within.
Mountains loomed silently behind the city, its highest peak hidden behind the clouds.
Though he couldn’t see that far, he could already hear the distant sounds and smell all kinds of aroma even from afar.
“Finally, I made it,” he murmured with a wide grin.
He made the horse stop by the side of the road, then dismounted. He then quickly discarded his blood-stained, dirty clothes and slipped into new ones.
Of course, these new ones were looted from the bandits that attacked him in the past. After he wore a clean set of clothes, he finally removed the kitsune mask.
The once-white mask was already stained crimson from all the slaughter. Adam sighed and muttered in a low voice:
“It’s best to put this away. I don’t want anything connecting me to that incident outside Ichigane Town.”
As he put away the mask, storing it inside the mimic, he observed his exposed hands. Soon, he covered them with thin strips of white cloth, hiding his burnt skin.
He then retrieved a piece of black cloth and tied it around his face, only leaving everything below his nose uncovered.
“Hmm, now as for the language barrier…” he murmured, deep in thought. “What should I do?”
Hisaki had mentioned to him that there were barely any outsiders who came to this part of the continent. Adam didn’t want to draw attention to himself by making others realize that he was an outsider.
After all, there was a slim possibility that could connect him to the murder of Tensei Arakuro.
“Ah!” He suddenly thought of something and couldn’t help but burst into a crazed fit of laughter.
He laughed and laughed and laughed.
“I know! I know!” He quickly mounted his steed and rode towards the city. “Let’s go, boy!”
***
“Halt!” One of the city guards, donning a clean leather armour and wielding a spear, stopped right in front of Adam’s stallion.
Seeing the lower part of his face covered in deep burn marks, the guard couldn’t help but involuntarily grimace. He gulped subconsciously, wondering just what in the world Adam must have gone through to survive such a gruesome ordeal.
Unbeknownst to him, his voice had turned a little soft when he asked:
“Identify yourself, Magus. What is your purpose of visiting Jingyun City?”
Adam tilted his head a little. He then turned to the guard and innocently muttered:
“Auhh!”
