Chapter 1239: Negotiation
The pair of giant blue eyes stared at him unblinkingly, surprise and curiosity flickering in them.
But for Adam, his entire being was awashed by terror. He froze in place as he faced the pair of eyes, not knowing what to do.
His body trembled. His mind was constantly attacked by the ravings of the Faceless Mask. Slowly, his lips curled into a wide, nervous grin.
“…Hello, there.” He waved.
The pair of giant blue eyes blinked.
From the very brief one-sided interaction with the owner of the pair of blue eyes, Adam could surmise a couple of things.
First, this was the Mana Core-level beast drawn to the mana-rich region by the portal. Second, for some reason, it did not seem that hostile towards him. If anything, it looked… intrigued. Third, and this was pure speculation on his behalf, the beast could not enter the building.
Seeing the vertical pupils gradually dilate, Adam became more certain that the owner of the pair of blue eyes did not view him with hostility.
No, it would be more apt to say that this beast did not take him seriously. After all, he was but a mere Mana Vortex Magus, one that had gone mad. Just what kind of threat could a person like him pose to this great beast?
Adam gulped subconsciously. Though he was still deeply afraid deep down in his heart, he mustered a tiny speck of courage to speak with this beast. If he could negotiate his way out of here, then he’d prefer to do that.
Scheming took a lot of mental focus and time.
“C-can you speak?” he asked meekly.
The pair of blue eyes blinked yet again. They intently looked at Adam, deeply observing him.
An awkward yet suffocating silence settled around the youth. He was being scrutinized by a powerful beast at the Mana Core Rank, after all.
Just when he was thinking of asking another question, the owner of the pair of blue eyes spoke, its voice feminine but deep:
“What are you?”
Adam was startled. When the beast’s voice echoed in his ears, it felt like he was standing in the middle of a blizzard with nothing to protect him. Not only did he feel his back turn cold, but he also felt his entire body tremble from the chill. It was like he was facing a force of nature!
“I, uh…” He tried to find the right words to speak, nervousness seeping into his very bones. “I’m human. M-my name is Adam.”
The beast blinked.
“A human?” She asked, curiosity flashing in her eyes. “You do not look like a human.”
“Uhm, well that’s because…” Adam tried to come up with an explanation.
But in the end, he simply shrugged and said with a nervous smile:
“…Life.”
Once again, the pair of giant blue eyes blinked.
The next moment, however, the temperature suddenly dropped, and the beast’s vertical black pupils gradually constricted. Slowly, a vast and terrifying aura started to emanate from the beast. Adam, who was the target of the overbearing aura, collapsed on his knees.
“Tell me, human,” the beast demanded. “How did you arrive here?”
Adam’s body trembled from fright. His lips curled into an unnatural grin, and then… he laughed. He cocked his head back and laughed and laughed and laughed.
The pair of eyes blinked again, puzzled.
“Did I say something… funny?” asked the beast.
“No, no… hahaha!” Adam waved his hand. “It’s just… hahaha… I can’t help it! I just can’t—hahaha!”
The beast was speechless for a brief moment, but then she was furious. Her eyes narrowed and her vertical slits turned narrow and dangerous.
“Human, you dare laugh in my presence? It seems you do not value your life. If that is the case, then I shall end it the moment you step out of the pagoda.”
“Step out… of the pagoda…” Adam’s laughter vanished abruptly as he repeated the beast’s words, his voice barely a whisper.
It was then that he confirmed that this beast truly wasn’t able to set foot within this structure, which turned out to be a pagoda.
“But what the hell is a pagoda?” He murmured, tilting his head in confusion.
However, in the next instant, his heart tightened. He turned towards the great beast, hesitated for a moment, then… kowtowed.
“Please forgive me, great one,” he said humbly.
But secretly, his lips had curled into a wide, unsettling grin. That is why he chose to bow down, ensuring that he didn’t show his ridiculous grin to the blue-eyed beast, lest she take offence again.
“Due to some… experiments, I cannot help but get the urge to laugh every now and then. I meant no disrespect. As for how I arrived here…”
He paused for a moment, thinking of what to say. Suddenly, an idea bloomed inside his crazed mind. If he wasn’t going to fight against this beast, then he might as well try this new idea. If it failed, well… he could always try to fight the beast afterwards.
“Oh, great one,” he began, his voice full of flair and theatrics. “I come from a land filled with beasts of every kind. The air there is thick with mana, the forests overflow with magical wildlife, and nature itself thrives in chaos and power. In that magical island, there is a portal—”
However, before he could finish his explanation, the beast interrupted him. Her eyes gradually widened ever so slightly, her pupils dilating.
“A land of… beasts?” She asked. “In all my life, I have never heard of a land filled with only beasts. The nearby lands are occupied by the four humanoid species. There is no such thing as a land of beasts.”
Her eyes narrowed once again. This time, she radiated utter bloodlust that threatened to drown Adam.
“Human, if you are lying to me, I shall deliver to you the most cruel death!”
Adam groaned in pain. Bearing the brunt of such killing intent caused him to nearly suffocate. However, he couldn’t help but feel dark glee bloom in his heart.
He clenched his fists and slowly sat upright. He turned towards the pair of blue eyes and screamed passionately:
“Oh, great one! I swear on the mana flowing in my veins that I am not lying! If you want… If you want, I can take you to that magical island!”
