Chapter 473: Choosing a Target

Besides the three leaders, there were plenty of weaker supporting characters, most of them tied to the Yang, Qiu, and Zhang clans.

The one with the lowest fate value was a Zhang Clan junior named Zhang Sha, and those with nearly the same pitiful numbers were just his hangers-on.

Jiang Chen quickly pieced things together.

So this Zhang Sha is fated to be Lu Yi’s first victim. His eyes narrowed slightly at the thought.

The cause? No doubt greed. They’ll eye Lu Yi’s cultivation method, go after him, and end up dead for it.

As his gaze swept across Roaring River Martial City, he studied each figure carefully. By the time he was done, he not only grasped the general flow of the original plot but also mapped out the ties between the city’s clans and the supporting characters.

In Roaring River Martial City, the Yang Clan reigned at the top.

The Zhang and Qiu Clans claimed to be equals, but in truth they had to band together just to hold their ground—yet even then, the Yang Clan kept them firmly under its heel.

The reason was simple. The Yang Clan had strong backing from the Compassionate Sword Immortal Palace. Their city lord came from the clan, and several more of their elites were cultivating inside the Compassionate Sword Immortal Palace itself. With that kind of support, the Zhang and Qiu Clans were constantly suppressed and could never gain much ground.

The Zhang Clan had it the worst. Whenever they showed the slightest sign of trying to rise, the Yang Clan would crush them without hesitation.

Maybe that’s why Lu Yi chose the Zhang Clan as his target, Jiang Chen thought, glancing at Lu Yi before settling back to watch.

Not long after, Lu Yi finally reached Roaring River Martial City.

So this is the place. Looks lively… and the cultivators here don’t seem weak, he muttered to himself while standing at the city gates.

There must be plenty of rich folk in this city! Lu Yi thought, rubbing his hands with excitement. In his mind, he could already see himself raking in piles of spirit jades and soaring to new heights.

With that, he strutted through the gates.

By now he was already using the breath-concealing technique Jiang Chen had given him. After fusing it with his two other arts, the Cleansing Breath Restraining Aura had grown even stronger, its concealment far deeper. Paired with a simple disguise, it was more than enough to fool cultivators at his level.

Blending in with the stream of people entering the city, Lu Yi slipped inside without drawing attention.

Flying was forbidden here, so he moved on foot, sweeping the streets with his divine sense as he walked.

For him, covering the entire city was effortless.

Before long, he had a clear picture of Roaring River Martial City—especially the tangled web between its major clans.

Yang, Zhang, and Qiu… three clans propping up the city like a tripod, Lu Yi mused. But that’s only on the surface. In truth, Zhang and Qiu are far weaker—and the Zhang Clan has it worst of all.

The Yang Clan keeps them down, blocking them at every turn, seizing the best cultivation resources for themselves. No wonder the Zhang and Qiu Clans can never raise enough strong experts to match them.

Of course, when it comes to ordinary spirit jades or minor treasures, the Yang Clan doesn’t bother. But things like that can’t create Nirvana Peering realm experts anyway.

A faint smile tugged at his lips. The Zhang Clan is weak. Perfect. I’ll deal with them. They’re bound to spread the word—if the Yang Clan catches wind, they’ll fight tooth and nail to snatch this chance, and the Zhang Clan won’t dare let that happen. Exactly what I need.

Decision made, Lu Yi strode forward without hesitation.

So, he’s cautious after all. Didn’t just pick at random—he settled on the Zhang Clan after weighing his options, Jiang Chen thought, rubbing his chin, a faint smile tugging at his lips.

His figure flickered, and in the next instant he was stretched out on the tiled eaves of the Zhang Clan’s main hall, lounging as if he owned the place.

Down below, Lu Yi had just arrived outside the Zhang Mansion.

The sprawling estate shimmered with the glow of a protective formation. Lu Yi had no training in arrays and couldn’t hope to force his way through. Sneaking in was out of the question.

Guess I’ll just have to wait. Catch a ride when the chance comes, he thought with a sigh, lingering near the gate.

Before long, the two guards stationed there noticed him. Both frowned.

“Hey! What are you loitering for? This isn’t a place for trash like you. Get lost!” one shouted, glaring at him.

The other smirked and gave a mocking nod of agreement.

To the two guards, Lu Yi was nothing more than a nobody with no business hanging around the Zhang Mansion.

“You’re chasing me off? Haha… you’ll regret it.” Lu Yi gave them a flat glance before stepping back to a spot farther away.

But the guards weren’t done glaring.

“Keep walking! If we see you again, you’ll regret it!” one barked.

“Didn’t you hear him? Scram!” the other snapped.

Lu Yi sneered. “The two of you are finished.” With that, he slipped behind a corner.

High above, Jiang Chen had seen everything. He knew exactly what was about to happen—another one of those classic scenes where the so-called underdog turns the tables and humiliates the ones who mocked him.

But this time, Jiang Chen had no plans to step in.

After all, Lu Yi wasn’t like Mo Hao, who had to rely on putting on shows like this to grow stronger. Letting him strut a little didn’t matter.

If even that was interrupted, Heavenly Fate itself might start pushing back.

Better to let things play out—small patience saves big trouble, Jiang Chen thought, amusement flickering in his eyes.

Just then, several Zhang Clan cultivators returned to the mansion.

Whoosh!

The protective formation parted to let them through, and one by one they stepped inside.

At the same moment, a strand of divine sense slipped in through the gap and into the Zhang Mansion.

The divine sense slipped in quietly.

Before the formation closed, it locked onto a tall elder with a pointed goatee—Zhang Chuan, the strongest cultivator of the Zhang Clan’s current generation.

He sat upright in a chair, his presence heavy. Rows of clan members stood along both sides, tense and silent, hardly daring to breathe.

In the center, a young man knelt—Zhang Sha.

“Zhang Sha, your talent is outstanding. To reach this level at your age is rare,” Zhang Chuan said with clear approval.

His gaze hardened. “But talent is no excuse to slack off in cultivation.”

Just as he was about to wave Zhang Sha away to reflect on his mistakes, a voice suddenly echoed in his ears.

“Lord Zhang!”

Zhang Chuan stiffened, his expression turning grim. “Who dares invade my Zhang Mansion with divine sense? Do they have a death wish!?”
