Chapter 929: Expedition
The team advanced swiftly, unworried about the current Zombies within their vicinity…
The zombies were clustered near a collapsed barn, feasting on the remains of what seemed like a mutated deer. Their bodies were bloated, their limbs had extra joints, and they looked nasty from decay and mutation.
One turned at the sound of footsteps, but it was too late.
Jake charged first, with his Armored Dash to create chaos… His Ogre’s Constitution was active, and any impact coming from the zombies was nothing for him.
He was even shrugging off the bite of a Tyrant Zombie. For these Screamer Zombies, he easily slammed them into the ground. Chris followed, his Iron Muscle activated as he delivered a bone-crushing punch that shattered a zombie’s spine.
Bon also charged forward, grabbing a zombie by the neck and twisting until its neck snapped.
However, as it seemed that they would be able to easily eliminate the six Screamer Zombies, six more Earth Zombies came out of the ground!
They were Zombies that Bon and the others failed to detect, as they were most likely unmoving beneath the ground.
Such Zombies who had completely adapted to their surroundings would be very difficult to detect even with good inspection skills.
Because of that, the others had to move…
Chaloem also charged forward with his palm covered with his Aura that could crush even an Armored Tyrant…
Eudora, with her nature magic, deployed a terrain spike, impaling two targets from below with a burst of mana-infused sharp stone. Of course, she targeted their cores, ensuring that they wouldn’t be able to recover.
“Alright… Let’s finish them off.”
Lysandra also joined in as she severed their limbs and pierced their cores with ease.
Liam and Sandra, on the other hand, just secured the perimeter, ensuring that no other Zombies or even Survivors could interfere…
“Nice… Twelve Zombies down.” Bon reported. “No more stray Zombies detected.”
Sandra landed near the barn and she also confirmed no other Zombies around. “Good pace. Let’s keep moving.”
Just like that, they continued eastward, navigating through broken terrain and overgrown paths.
This path was obviously not being used a lot, but it didn’t matter.
The sun dipped low by late afternoon, so they had to quickly find a place to rest…
By evening, they reached a small plateau overlooking a dried riverbed.
“This’ll do,” Lysandra said as she scanned the perimeter. “Elevated ground with good visibility. We can easily escape if necessary.”
Eudora nodded. “I’ll alter the slope just in case. We don’t want anything climbing up easily.”
Bon then unpacked the bag he was carrying. He actually had a Zombie-Warding Lamp, powered by 10 pieces of Spirit Stones. Once activated, it emitted a faint blue glow and a repelling field that disrupted undead senses within a fifty-meter radius.
They also have a Guardian Node with them that could cover a larger range but for now, they didn’t think it would be needed.
Whom~
“Alright… Lamp active,” he said. “We’re clear for the night.”
The team set up their tents in a loose circle, with Jake and Chris taking outer positions. Chaloem sat cross-legged near the lamp, his aura syncing with its field to extend the suppression range.
Liam gathered dry wood for a small cooking fire, while Lysandra checked their food rations. Well, they could cook as well, but they decided to just rely on some instant ramen and some jerky for the night.
After all, they would always have a decent breakfast every morning according to their plans.
At this time, Sandra sat on a rock, cleaning her bow…
“Not bad for this day, right?” she said. “We covered twenty-five kilometers and cleared several hideouts of Zombies.”
Jake stretched his arms as he also felt satisfied with their accomplishments today.
“We’ll need to pace ourselves. Rivershade’s still three days out.”
Bon looked up from his scanner. “The terrain ahead is uneven. We’ll hit a collapsed highway by tomorrow afternoon… We might encounter something big there based on the footprints of the Zombies…”
Eudora nodded as her senses also told her about the problems they could face tomorrow…
“I can reinforce the path if needed. I have enough Mana Crystals with me anyway.”
Lysandra then glanced at Sandra and whispered… “Hmm… I think that you really picked a good team. We’re balanced.”
Sandra nodded. “Let’s see how we hold up tomorrow.”
The night passed quietly.
No zombies approached, but the lamp’s warding ability wasn’t just a display. It was able to ward off any low-tier and mid-tier Zombies without any issues…
They slept in shifts, rotating watch every three hours.
And when dawn broke, the Vanguard Wing was ready to move again.
***
The morning sun crept over the horizon. From their spot, there was a faint scent of dew mixed with the earthy aroma of the dried riverbed below.
Sandra already changed to her usual gear… She had slept lightly, as always, but the night had been uneventful.
The Zombie-Warding Lamp still glowed faintly, its energy was slowly dimming after a full night of use but it didn’t matter. They have a lot of Spirit Stones prepared for this expedition.
One by one, the others emerged from their tents.
Jake and Chris had taken the final watch shift and were already boiling water over the small fire Liam had rekindled.
The flames crackled gently, and the pot above it steamed with a faint herbal scent…
“Breakfast’s almost ready,” Jake said while stirring the pot with a metal ladle. “We’re going with the fortified stew today.”
It must be remembered that Jake, Chris, and Liam were leaders of a squad before. They were Survivors who had been tirelessly completing Clan Missions arranged within their Clan Hall in the Springriver Manor.
They were always outside the shelter due to their type of work.
Still, because of that, they had received numerous rewards from the Clan and were able to gather a Set of Legendary Gears of their own.
This was the reason why they weren’t new to camping out…
Bon nodded approvingly at the sight of the food they prepared… “Good choice. High in stamina recovery. I heard that gives a boost in Spirit Energy recovery.”
“Itadakimasu!” Liam said as he was the first one to dig in.
