Chapter 916: Momentum
The first mortar shell landed a few meters off the nearest traps they had placed…
Thud!
This deep thud echoed across the shelter as it was followed by a plume of dust and dirt.
For sure, with just another adjustment or two, they would be able to start hitting their shelter.
“They’re firing already?” Minerva muttered, adjusting her scope. “That’s farther than expected…”
She then noticed that the Gravedigger’s barrel tilted again as its targeting system recalibrated, locking onto the outer perimeter.
Another shell launched.
This time, it struck closer, just about 15 meters from the wall! It was getting too close and the blast radius was wide…
With a single shell, it was certainly not enough to breach the defenses. However, if they fired dozens of them at once, it would become a problem really soon…
“Maybe they’re testing our range…” Austin muttered as he looked at the activated barrier of the Silver Mine Camp.
[ The Aegis Force Barrier Generator: The Aegis Core was a monolith of mysterious metal powered by at least 20 Power Cores. It creates an almost impenetrable barrier within a 200-meter radius… ]
The dome of energy was incredibly tough, but it had a limit. Since it was only using Power Cores, it would surely not last that long if continuously attacked by the mortar shells.
Thud!
As expected, the next mortar shell struck the barrier directly.
A ripple of light spread across the dome, absorbing the impact.
“It’ll hold for some time…” Lysandra muttered as she saw that there was no damage from that bombardment.
“But we can’t stay passive. They’ll keep bombarding until something cracks.”
Shane nodded. “Then we bait them.”
He then turned to his wristwatch, or his A.I. Cloud, and ordered it to start the operation.
[ Affirmative. Fifty Warden Units deployed. ]
The Warden Units were a reliable mechanical army, and aside from their natural iron defense, they also carried his Auto Safety Protection Tokens that didn’t require Spirit Points usage for activation.
With their rifles on hand and daggers for close range, they would be terrifying opponents since they do not feel pain. They were difficult to stop as well, since they do not rely on vision but on their scanner to detect their enemies.
As the gates opened, the squads started running.
Well, since they were machines, they do not have any skills they could activate…
Soon, their movement was seen by the enemies…
“They’re moving,” one of the scouts from Squad 9 reported. “Silver Mine Camp is sending out their androids, or is it Warden? Whatever it is…’
Lesley didn’t react, and she remained near the rear. Those Warden Units weren’t a problem to them… They were just mere machines, and the only thing worrying about them was their accuracy with their rifles… Because of that, they had to always use their barrier to protect themselves.
If not, they would get their heads shot by these androids.
But the Flamecaster Division shifted slightly, adjusting their tanks.
Soon, the elite squads made a path as they sent out their Heavy Units. To be exact, they sent out their six operators of Exosuits to deal with the Warden Units!
“They’re biting,” Diana said. “They think we’re sending out our frontliners.”
“Right…” Shane muttered. However, he hadn’t sent out Max and the others yet…
Max just stood behind the outer gate waiting for Shane’s signal.
For now, he watched the Warden Units advance, waiting for the moment the enemy committed.
***
The six operators in exosuits moved quickly.
They were the Steamroller Frame Team and had been deployed specifically to intercept the Warden Units due to their high-grade defense.
Each exosuit was like a walking fortress… As the Warden Units advanced in formation, the operators activated their shields and braced for impact.
The clash was immediate.
Warden Units opened fire, targeting their joints as expected…
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The rifles continued firing as they locked onto their weak points. Their bullets could surely tore into the exosuits’ outer plating since they were Tier 5 bullets, but the shield was just too strong.
Soon, the operators retaliated with shock batons and their own oversized hands smashing through the first wave of androids.
One Warden was crushed by a smash coming from above while another was grabbed and hurled into a rock wall.
But they kept coming.
The Warden units didn’t feel pain or fear any of their targets. They didn’t hesitate or stop even if their companions were destroyed by the enemies…
Within seconds, the exosuit team was surrounded.
“Unit 3, fall back!” one of the operators shouted, but his voice was drowned out by the sound of metal-on-metal.
A Warden Unit lunged with a dagger, piercing the joint of an exosuit’s knee.
Just like that, sparks flew as the operator staggered, overwhelmed by the Warden Units…
Another Warden fired point-blank into their head, cracking their protection…
Shane watched all of this while also monitoring the movements of the Siege Weapons… The bombardment was still continuing, but it wasn’t using everything just yet for some reason.
Nonetheless, Shane didn’t mind…
“Just wait until the Warden Units were about to be cleared…” He muttered.
Soon, two exosuits went down hard… One was disabled, and the other was forced to eject as flames broke through his armor.
The remaining four operators formed a tight circle, shields raised, trying to hold the line.
But the Warden Units weren’t slowing, and they were about to break through.
Then the ground trembled.
From the rear formation, Orlando raised his hand.
Five golems had finally appeared…
They were massive constructs of stone and metal! Their eyes glowed faint as they locked onto the remaining Warden Units.
“So they’re the ones who caused trouble on Asad’s Undead Summons, huh?” Shane mused as he saw the five golems…
The first golem slammed into the flank, sending three Wardens flying.
Boom!
Another raised its arm and brought it down like a hammer, crushing two more!
Just like that, the momentum of the battle had completely changed!
