Chapter 977: “They are scary”
{It is most likely not going to escalate any further until they are done dealing with the empire, so we advise you to entertain it at this stage and not attempt to kill them, as that would attract their attention back to you, and you risk becoming the main target for them to vent their anger and humiliation,} Little Protagonist advised Dreznor, who had just asked about the feasibility of them dealing with the Conclave’s probing forces that still remained even after their attack on the empire.
Although inside, he was happy that the situation had somehow cooled due to a new target appearing, that target being his supporters, the empire made it very difficult to celebrate. He knew they were the ones who had made him and helped him reach this level of strength in just a few years.
He wasn’t ungrateful, nor did he see this as a chance to break the alliance. The thought never even crossed his mind, not because he feared them, but because his loyalty ran deep. He also knew that even if he had that thought, there was nothing he could do to achieve it, as everything that kept him in power was made by, or the knowledge to create it was provided by, the empire. The moment he turned into their enemy, he would lose all of it and be left to regret attempting it.
At the moment, all of the free forces that were not facing the probing forces were gathering materials to send to the empire for use in the production of war weapons. With more than a hundred star systems under his control, he could provide an abundance of them without feeling any crunch.
Even if it reached that level of desperation, he would dismantle his fleets to continue sending them reinforcements because now that the empire was known to be his supporter, they were entangled and considered to be one. Should the empire successfully deal with the Conclave forces, they would come to his aid and help him achieve his dream faster than he ever imagined.
“Based on how the situation is at the moment, they can withdraw them at any moment they want. So, how about we look as if we are trying to send aid to the empire, but these forces are the ones holding us back, so that they are forced to maintain their presence here even if they are needed on the battlefield or in other areas? ,” Dreznor suggested, in order to give the probing force a dilemma of whether to retreat, which would allow Dreznor and his forces to use this freedom to send aid to the empire, or remain attacking and keeping them in check, tying up a very large portion of their needed fleets.
There was no immediate answer, as she was contacting Nyx, Athena, and the relevant chain of command to see what their decision was going to be. At the moment, they were considered no different than just another branch of the imperial military fighting the same war, so their actions needed to be made with consideration of the whole war plan. {Yes, we have received their approval. We can go ahead with it and even sacrifice a few wormhole ships to make it more believable,} she said, delivering the response she was given.
“Go ahead,” Dreznor gave his permission, and Little Protagonist delivered the order with an action plan to implement it.
“But what is the empire’s next action? I’m curious,” he asked, wanting to see how an empire made of only two star systems was contending against the Conclave, where even the weakest of them had at least ten times more than that. Because to anyone, it looked like an impossible wall to climb, yet the empire was scaling it in real time.
{Let’s watch it together then. I have been given access to live feeds of different areas where the war is active, and they are about to embark on a very interesting mission,} Little Protagonist said with a smile on her face as a massive screen spread in front of the two of them, showing him a real-time, movie-like viewing experience. She chose the feeds to show him, added music, and went as far as to render additional scenes to provide context.
At the moment, she was showing him a feed from one of Mars’s largest stargate bases, with more than a hundred stargates already active as more than a million different individuals walked into the building and into the stargates without a moment of waiting, as the camera angle shifted to show more of them waiting outside as the line moved very fast.
“Where are they going?” he asked, curious as to where these wormholes connected them.
{The Conclave,} Little Protagonist answered as the scene shifted, showing a simulation of thousands of star systems with their names and showing which civilizations they were owned by. This caused goosebumps on Dreznor as he realized the empire was sending forces directly, turning this war on its head by forcing the attackers to now choose whether to return and defend their territories or continue attacking the empire.
It wasn’t really a choice, since the forces were sent to each civilization’s most important planets, the complete opposite of Dreznor’s strategy of going for the weakest planets from the weakest civilizations.
“I’m pretty sure they didn’t give the absolute coordinates of their planets and only gave the coordinates of where you created the wormhole gates for the highway, so how did they manage to get them so close to the planets? Did the empire find a way to pinpoint absolute spatial coordinates without having to map them?” he asked in awe. In his mind, the image of the empire, which was already big, risked ballooning even more because if they actually did that, it would be a feat equally as impressive as opening a wormhole itself.
{Though I would love for that to be true, it is not. They are the ones who brought us that close,} Little Protagonist said as she zoomed to one of the many planets on the screen, showing POV footage of an avatar who had just exited from the other side of the wormhole. When the avatar turned around, it revealed something familiar to anyone connected to VR: the VR tower. The empire had just used those as a connection source and a way to map absolute coordinates.
{They already had micro wormholes on a quantum scale, thousands of them opening and closing constantly to facilitate the instant communication needed to run the VR across the vast distances. We just needed to allow one to survive longer and collect its coordinates, then voila, we now have the absolute coordinates of their most important star systems, where they had pushed for the system to be erected,} Little Protagonist added, giving additional context as to how the empire achieved this feat.
Dreznor, in a fit of surprise, covered his mouth with his hands, realizing that the empire had considered the possibility that they might fight the Conclave in the future and had set it so that every bit of tech they were sending to the Conclave had a hidden second purpose as a tool to give them the upper hand in case a war broke out between the two sides.
“They are scary,” he said as the POV of the avatar didn’t stay still for long. They started fighting in an attempt to breach the planets, because very few of the VR towers were on the planets themselves, but in orbits and on moons near the planets.
They needed to go through the prepared planetary defenses and fleets before reaching the planets, but with more than ten billion undying soldiers, it was a war where they could afford to use everyone as cannon fodder. To humans, this would look no different than a large-scale raid in hell mode that they needed to rack their brains to come up with a solution for.
They were finally on the weaker side, unlike their attack on the stranded Conclave fleets in the Oort cloud. And what human didn’t love fighting against the odds to the last man? With no risk to their lives, they could live that dream repeatedly until they achieved the impossible of overcoming the odds and winning a heavily disadvantaged fight.
