Chapter 882: Chapter 882 Accent

The days that followed were busy for the Johnson household.

With the wedding date reset, the family had to begin preparations all over again—but this time the matter was larger, grander, and even more delicate.

Ross was no longer marrying just one of the Johnson girls, but both sisters.

The talk of the town had quickly shifted toward envy, gossip, and even disbelief, for very few men could boast of such a fortune.

Naturally, Ross’s visits to the Johnson home became more frequent as the days passed.

The more he appeared, the more his presence seemed to brighten the house.

Servants straightened their backs whenever he entered, Laura and Lois lit up like blossoms in spring, and even Kate herself… found her heart unsettled.

At first, she dismissed it as admiration, the natural fondness one would feel for a man destined to be part of her family.

But the more she saw him, the more complicated her feelings grew.

There was an ease in his smile, a confidence in his words, and a warmth in his gaze that unsettled her composure.

She was old enough to be wiser, but whenever Ross visited, she found herself unconsciously smoothing her dress, checking her reflection, and waiting for his voice.

This afternoon was no different. Ross had come earlier than expected, and Kate found herself lingering in the sitting room with him while her daughters busied themselves elsewhere.

The silence between them stretched, heavy with an unspoken awareness. At last, Kate drew in a small breath and broke it.

“Ross… are you free right now?” she asked, her voice softer than she intended.

Ross turned his attention fully to her, that familiar, effortless charm flickering in his eyes. “Of course, Kate. I’m always free for you. What’s the matter? Is your back giving you trouble again?”

Her lips parted slightly, startled that he had read her so easily.

He had always noticed such things—too easily, perhaps.

His eyes drifted downward for just an instant, catching on her full curves before returning to her face.

Kate caught the flicker, and her heart skipped despite herself.

It was no wonder he teased her about her back pains; her figure had always been generous, though now it felt like a curse that drew attention she ought not want.

Blushing faintly, she nodded. “Yes… it’s been aching all day. Could you… maybe help me with it again?”

Ross’s grin widened, teasing but kind. “Of course. With my magic hands, no back pain will trouble you again—at least not for a few days.”

His confidence made her flustered, though she tried to mask it with a faint smile.

She opened her mouth to respond, but no words came out.

Before she could gather herself, Ross had already stepped closer, one hand brushing lightly against her arm as if guiding her.

The touch was casual, almost innocent, yet it sent an inexplicable shiver through her.

Kate hesitated, her thoughts racing.

This was her daughters’ fiancé—no, soon-to-be husband.

She should not feel this way.

And yet, the warmth of his presence made her reluctance dissolve.

Without another word, Ross placed a steadying hand at her lower back and gently urged her toward the staircase.

The sound of their footsteps on the polished wood echoed faintly in the quiet house.

Servants had long since busied themselves elsewhere, and the daughters were in the courtyard, laughing together—leaving the halls strangely private.

Step by step, Kate followed, her breath unsteady. She told herself it was only a massage, nothing more.

Still, when Ross opened the door to a secluded room upstairs and motioned her inside, her pulse quickened.

The door closed softly behind them, shutting out the rest of the world.

Ross began the massage with an ease that spoke of experience.

His hands moved with firm confidence, kneading away the tension in Kate’s shoulders, smoothing down her spine, pressing just enough to make her release soft sighs of relief.

The warm oil carried a faint herbal fragrance, seeping into her skin and loosening the tightness that had plagued her for days.

Kate had told herself to remain composed, to focus only on the relief, but Ross’s touch was far too skilled.

Every press of his fingers seemed to draw away not just her pain, but her thoughts as well.

Her body relaxed, her mind blurred, and slowly the world around her drifted into silence.

Within moments, her eyelids grew too heavy to hold open. She surrendered, slipping into a deep, peaceful sleep.

When she woke some hours later, she felt as though she had been reborn.

Her limbs were light, her back no longer ached, and for the first time in a long while, she felt truly rested.

But then awareness struck her, sharp and sudden.

Her heart leapt as she realized her state—she was still bare from the waist up, only a thin sheet loosely covering her.

Instinctively, her hand clutched at the cloth, pulling it against her chest as she darted a look around the room.

“Ohhh…” Kate breathed, the sound escaping her lips in a startled gasp.

Ross was there.

He wasn’t looming over her, nor staring at her. Instead, he was fast asleep in a chair beside the bed.

His large frame seemed almost comical against the delicate wooden seat, his arms folded loosely across his chest, his head tilted slightly to one side.

His breathing was steady, calm—completely at ease.

Kate’s lips parted, caught between relief and something far more dangerous.

She knew she should immediately redress herself, wake him, and pretend none of this had happened.

And yet… for a moment, her gaze lingered.

She studied the breadth of his shoulders, the strength in his arms even at rest, the way the chair seemed far too small to contain him.

He looked younger like this, stripped of his usual charm and confidence, but no less commanding.

The sight tugged at something deep within her chest.

Shaking her head quickly, she turned away, ashamed of herself.

She reached for her bra, her fingers fumbling as she fastened it with urgency.

Then she pulled her blouse back on, smoothing the wrinkles from the fabric as if each careful motion could erase what she felt in her heart.

At last, she stood. Her steps were soft, deliberate, as she moved toward him.

Ross was still sleeping soundly, his chest rising and falling in rhythm.

Kate hesitated, her hand hovering just above his arm.

She told herself she was only going to wake him gently, thank him, and send him on his way.

That was all. Nothing more.

Her fingers inched closer, trembling ever so slightly.

And then—just as she was about to touch him—something happened that she had not expected.
