Chapter 1170: A door to next trial?

He sat cross-legged again, his focus absolute. Every movement of the flames, every twist and ripple, he memorized. Then, with renewed clarity, he returned to the Dimension of Time.

This process repeated again and again. Each time he reached a dead end, he emerged from his dimension to observe the Devouring Essence Flames directly. Each time he reentered the Dimension of Time, his understanding grew sharper.

He began to perceive not only how the flames consumed but also how they transformed what they devoured. The fire didn’t destroy for the sake of destruction. It consumed chaos, weakness, and imperfection to refine the world around it.

Hours turned into a full day. The other geniuses in the trial were still struggling to harmonize with the surface-level flames, while Max continued alternating between meditation and comprehension.

Inside his Dimension of Time, the patterns of the Devouring Essence Flames became clearer. They weren’t chaotic. They followed a rhythm—a law of absolute refinement.

It was then that realization dawned upon him.

‘Devouring does not mean destruction,’ he thought, his eyes opening wide in understanding. ‘It means evolution through consumption. It means taking everything—the pure, the impure, the strong, the weak—and turning it into power that transcends its origin. Devouring is not the end. It’s the beginning of transformation.’

At that moment, something within Max’s body reacted. The black flames that rested deep in his soul ignited violently, fusing with the essence he had been studying. A vortex of fire surrounded him, swirling upward like a storm. The Devouring Essence Flames within the pillar responded in kind, roaring as if recognizing one of their own.

A wave of heat exploded outward, shaking the entire trial area. Geniuses meditating nearby opened their eyes in shock. They looked toward the center of the flame pillar and saw Max’s figure engulfed in a cocoon of black and golden fire.

“What is that aura?” someone shouted, shielding their face.

“He’s fusing with the Devouring Essence Flames! That’s impossible! No one can approach them without being consumed!” another genius exclaimed.

But Max wasn’t being consumed. He was embracing them.

Inside the inferno, his consciousness expanded. He could feel the flame not as a force, but as an extension of himself. His soul merged with the concept’s essence, crossing the boundary between understanding and embodiment. He saw the law unfold before him—the truth that existed beyond words.

When the flames finally calmed, Max opened his eyes. His red pupils glowed faintly black, reflecting both life and annihilation. The black flames that had once devoured recklessly now burned steadily around his hand, refined and controlled.

He stood slowly, his aura spreading through the air like ripples of heat.

He had comprehended the Fourth Level Concept of Flames — Devouring Rebirth.

The trial realm shuddered in acknowledgment. The pillar of flames dimmed as though bowing before him, and the deep voice that governed the trial echoed through the air.

“First Flame Comprehender… Max Voidwalker.”

The geniuses who witnessed it were left speechless. Even those from higher realms, known for their deep comprehension of elemental concepts, could only stare in disbelief. To comprehend a fourth-level concept in a single day was something that defied all logic.

Max exhaled slowly, his body relaxed but his eyes sharper than before. “Devouring Rebirth,” he whispered. “The flame that consumes to evolve.”

Just then, the ground beneath Max trembled lightly, and the pillar of flames began to shift. The roaring fire that had filled the area calmed as if bowing before him, and at the same moment, a deep rumble echoed throughout the entire realm.

A bright crimson light formed in front of Max, swirling slowly like molten glass before hardening into a structure. Within seconds, a door appeared—a massive, ancient-looking gate forged from both flame and frost. Half of it burned with golden-red fire while the other half glistened with layers of thick ice.

It was unlike anything Max had seen in this trial so far. The temperature around it fluctuated wildly, alternating between suffocating heat and freezing cold. The air cracked with pressure, and faint streams of steam rose from where the two elements met, merging and clashing in harmony.

Max stepped closer and examined it carefully. From the outside, the door seemed to lead to nothingness. Beyond its frame, only an endless void could be seen, stretching infinitely in all directions.

There were no signs, no inscriptions, and no hints of what lay within. It was as if the door itself didn’t belong to this realm at all but rather connected to something far older and far more mysterious.

He narrowed his eyes. “A void door…” he muttered quietly. “Where does this lead?”

The moment he spoke, the door responded faintly. The flames on its surface pulsed once, and the ice shimmered, producing a faint chime that echoed through the entire field. It almost sounded like the door was alive, waiting for someone to step through it.

‘Is this the entrance to the second part of the trial?’ he wondered. The timing, the sudden appearance of the door, and the strange energy balance around it all pointed to that conclusion.

He stood still for a while, contemplating his next move. Entering a realm of ice right after mastering the essence of devouring flames was risky. The conflicting natures of the two elements could harm his body and disturb his inner balance. But at the same time, this trial was designed for that very challenge—to make one understand and unify two opposing forces.

Finally, Max shook his head slightly, a faint smile appearing on his lips. “There’s no point standing here thinking about it,” he murmured to himself. “If this is the path forward, then I’ll just walk it.”

The air around him shifted as he approached the door. Each step made the temperature fluctuate violently. His right side burned with heat, while his left was assaulted by a freezing chill. It was as if the door was already testing him even before he stepped inside.

When he finally stopped before it, Max placed his hand upon the center of the door where flame and ice met. The surface felt alive—it pulsed softly beneath his palm, a mixture of warmth and cold spreading through his arm and into his body.

The moment he touched it, the door began to hum. Streams of energy, both fiery and frigid, flowed across its surface like rivers of light. Then, without warning, the gates slowly opened with a deep, resonant sound.

A blinding white light poured out, and behind it was nothing but pure void—an endless, shifting space of silence and darkness. No land, no sky, no horizon. Just emptiness.

‘Where does this lead?’ Max thought, squinting into the void. His instincts told him it wasn’t dangerous, yet there was an undeniable power emanating from within. It felt ancient, almost divine, as though this place existed beyond the limits of mortal understanding.

‘If this truly is the trial of ice, then I’ll find out soon enough,’ he thought to himself.

Taking a deep breath, Max steadied his energy. The flames around his body dimmed slightly, replaced by calm, neutral energy that allowed both heat and cold to coexist within him. Without hesitation, he stepped forward.

The moment his foot crossed the threshold, the flames and frost on the door surged at once, wrapping around him like twin streams of light. In the blink of an eye, Max’s figure was pulled into the void. The light of the door flickered one last time before fading completely, leaving behind only silence and the faint echo of its closing.
