Chapter 511: Loose Ends III

“You know we will need witnesses for this case.”

Ewan’s voice was gentle, wrapping around Athena’s awareness as he slid his hand around her waist, pulling her close. His warmth pressed into her, grounding her, even as her thoughts spiraled ahead to the prison visit.

He was dutifully reminding her of the needs for the case as she prepared to go visit Cedric alone. This was different from the elder’s council, where anything went—for even the recording might be termed as truth under compulsion.

Athena nodded, her mind working through the thought. She had already sent the addition to the lawyer, who would forward it the next day to the lawyer representing Cedric and his family—a murder trial in addition to fraud.

Which witness would stand? Would Connor? But wouldn’t that put his freedom at risk, considering he wasn’t exactly righteous?

She asked Ewan this, and he paused, his brow furrowed, deep in thought. “I will take care of it,” he finally said, voice steady, reassuring. “I’ll call my old boss too.”

Athena’s lips curved into a small, grateful smile. She trusted him completely; if anyone could handle this, it was her handsome fiance.

He pulled her closer, hands tightening around her waist, his voice dipping down to a husky tone. “Are you sure you want to go alone?”

She breathed yes, feeling the heat of his closeness.

He leaned down, brushing his lips against hers, and Athena felt the world narrow to just that—the press of his mouth, the warmth of his hands.

His kiss deepened, gentle at first, then wild and consuming, driving a heat through her that made her pulse hammer in her veins. She moaned his name softly, the sound vibrating between them, a secret confession of need.

Finally, he broke away, gasping slightly, but pressing his lips to her forehead. “We can continue when you’re back,” he whispered, eyes dark with desire.

Athena lingered for a moment in his embrace, a part of her wishing they could forgo the world outside and give in fully to the craving that had always simmered between them—wondering if now they would finally move past kisses and mind-numbing touches.

She couldn’t understand why he was waiting when both their bodies needed to meld as one

But she finally stepped back, feeling a mix of frustration and longing, the pulsing ache of anticipation riding through her.

“I will see you later then…”

—

Rodney drove her to the prison center.

Athena watched from the window as the city gave way to a stark, fortified compound. High walls topped with razor wire enclosed the space. Guard towers dotted the perimeter, their silhouettes scanning tirelessly.

The buildings inside were imposing, concrete and steel, with barred windows and heavy security checkpoints. Warden vehicles patrolled slowly, officers in crisp uniforms walking the grounds. The air had a metallic scent, faintly mixed with diesel from the parked security vans.

When the car stopped, Athena stepped down, her heels clicking against the concrete as she followed Rodney toward the entrance. Two armed guards checked her ID, their faces neutral, hands hovering near their holsters.

The heavy doors swung open, leading into a sterile reception area, fluorescent lights casting a harsh glare over the room. Athena’s gaze took in the stark interior—the benches bolted to the floor, the reinforced glass separating visitors from detainees, the metal detectors and scanners that made each visitor pause in small apprehension.

She was led down a narrow corridor to the waiting room, where Cedric would be brought to her. The walls were painted a bland beige, adorned with only emergency exit signs. A faint hum from the ventilation system filled the silence. The ticking of a clock sounded unnervingly loud in the quiet space.

Athena’s pulse quickened slightly as she waited, hands folded neatly on her lap. But not of fear or nerves, but of excitement. After all, she was here for only one thing—to taunt her unlucky cousin.

A few minutes later, Cedric was led into the room. He looked gaunt, the flesh on his face pale and drawn, thinner than the last time she had seen him. His dark eyes were wary, flashing anger when he caught sight of her.

Athena’s lips curved into a smile, as she broke the tension.

“Prison looks good on you,” she said lightly, though her eyes held mischief.

Cedric gritted his teeth in response. “I won’t be staying here for long,” he muttered, voice low and dangerous. Then, almost abruptly, he asked, “What do you want?”

Athena shrugged, her expression casual. “I’ll be adding a murder trial to the case.”

Cedric chuckled drily, a hollow sound that echoed in the small room, still refusing to sit down. “What are you talking about?”

She tilted the phone, showing him the video. His face paled as he watched, the color draining until he was nearly white.

Athena’s smile widened. “You are not going anywhere,” she taunted, shining her teeth. “If anything, your whole family will be joining you here.”

He stammered, disbelief and desperation lacing his voice. “You couldn’t do it… the court won’t accept the evidence!”

She shook her head, mock sympathy in her eyes. “There are witnesses.” She could see the panic rising in him, and it pleased her.

Cedric slumped slightly, but then reached out for her neck in sharp movements, his long legs covering the distance between them in seconds.

Athena allowed him to grab her, knowing that cameras were capturing the movement from multiple angles, her mind delighting in the perfect orchestration.

He muttered gibberish, threats tumbling from his lips as the guards stepped forward.

“You’ll regret this!” he shouted, struggling against them as they pulled him away.

Athena’s smile didn’t falter, even as she left the sterile room.

“I apologize,” she said lightly to the guards she met outside the room.

They shrugged, aware of her identity.

“… But make sure he is not allowed a telephone until tomorrow evening, neither visitors.”

The guards nodded, acknowledging the order.

Then she tipped them gracefully, and walked out of the prison, the smile still playing on her lips.
