Chapter 500: Last Invasion? II

The house was eerily quiet now, except for the echoing crackle of gunfire fading through the corridor. Smoke hung in the air—a hazy reminder of the battle that had raged moments ago.

Ewan moved quickly, gun angled before him, his boots crunching over scattered shell casings. Every corner, every doorway, every shadow was a potential threat.

He’d already cleared four rooms upstairs, all empty of what he wanted—no Kael, no Alfonso. Only unconscious gang members sprawled in blood and dust, the air thick with the smell of gunpowder and burnt cloth.

His jaw tightened. “Nothing,” he hissed, his voice low but edged with irritation. “No sign of either of them.”

Athena appeared at the end of the hall, her helmet tucked under one arm now that the noise had died down. Her eyes, sharp behind the smoke, searched his face before landing on the pistol in his hand. “You’re getting frustrated.”

“I’m not frustrated,” Ewan said quickly, then sighed. “Alright, I am. We’ve been through almost the entire house. They’re not here.”

Athena walked closer, the dark gear clinging to her like a second skin—matte black and lightweight, built for flexibility and silence. “Spider said there’s a lab underground,” she reminded, brushing her braid back. “If they’re anywhere, it’ll be there. Maybe hiding out with the twins.”

He nodded once. “Then that’s where we’ll go.”

Before they could move, Zane’s voice came through the comms—slightly breathless, tinged with surprise.

“Uh, Ewan. Athena. You might want to see this.”

They found Zane in a small room near the east wing. He was crouched beside a bed, his gun hanging loosely at his side. On the floor was a girl—maybe nine—trembling under a tattered blanket. Her eyes looked worried, haunted.

“She was hiding in the storage room,” Zane explained. “Name’s Cairo. Found by one of our men. Won’t say anything on how she has gotten here…” A pause. “Athena, she looks defiant really. Related to them?”

Athena nodded. “This is the Cairo. Mary’s daughter.”

She knelt beside the girl, her tone gentle. “It’s okay,” she said, offering her a hand. “You’re safe now.”

Cairo’s fingers trembled as she reached for it. “You are here for my family, aren’t you, Doctor Athena?”

Athena nodded, not seeing the reason to lie. “They have done something bad. And it’s time for them to deal with the consequences.”

Cairo started crying. “Please don’t kill them. Don’t kill my mommy.” Sniffles. “My mother doesn’t want to be here… please…”

Athena’s expression hardened. She turned to one of the agents. “Stay with her. Protect her. No one goes near her without clearance.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

Ewan’s gaze met hers — silent understanding passing between them. Heronica was probably right when she had said Mary had wanted out.

Will they let her go though?

Spider’s voice crackled again in their ears, breaking their thoughts.

“Coordinates updated. The lab entrance should be in the last room on the lower floor. Look for an anomaly behind the bookshelves—you’ll know it when you see it.”

Know it when you see it? Athena hoped so.

She was beginning to see that Spider could be quite optimistic.

They moved together down the narrow stairs, the air growing colder, heavier, as if the house itself wanted to keep its secrets buried. The final door opened into what appeared to be a simple guest room—cream wallpaper, a double bed neatly made, curtains drawn tight over the window. A lamp glowed dimly beside the bed, flickering every few seconds.

Sandro scanned the room. “Doesn’t look like a lab entrance to me.”

Ewan holstered his weapon briefly, running his fingers along the bookshelves Spider had mentioned. They were stacked with hardcovers and journals, old medical texts and psychology volumes .

“Spider,” he said into the mic, “we’re in. But there’s nothing unusual here.”

Spider’s voice was calm. “Check the shelves. Look for something that doesn’t belong—maybe a trigger or false panel.”

Athena ran her hand across the spines of the books, eyes scanning each title. Anatomy, Biology, Pathology—

Her hand froze over one. Peter Pan?

She blinked. “This book…” she murmured. “It’s Kathleen’s favorite.”

Without thinking, she pulled it out.

There was a soft click.

The shelf rumbled—a deep, mechanical sound—and then the entire frame shifted backward, grinding against hidden tracks before sliding open to reveal a narrow, pitch-black hallway. A breath of cold, sterile air rushed out.

Ewan’s lips curved slightly. “Good catch.”

Athena exhaled, adrenaline steadying her pulse. “You ready?”

“Always.”

She gestured silently to the team. They all activated their night-vision goggles; soft green light flickered across their lenses. They avoided using flashlights—the less light, the better. If the lab was soundproof, they had the advantage of surprise.

As the last man entered, the shelf behind them closed automatically with a hiss, sealing them inside.

The hallway stretched long and narrow, built of unpolished stone, the floor damp and uneven. Their boots made barely a sound as they advanced, weapons raised.

Then, after what felt like an eternity, the corridor widened, revealing an enormous underground chamber.

It was a lab.

Fluorescent tubes hung from the ceiling, their light sterile and ghostly, illuminating rows of metal tables. Glass containers lined the walls, some filled with murky liquids, others empty but stained with residue. The faint hum of machines blended with the rhythmic drip of condensation.

And at the center of it all—sitting casually on steel stools, one on each opposing table, demarcated by just a thin space—were the twin doctors.

Mary and Matthew.

They looked almost serene, as though they’d been expecting company.

Matthew was the first to notice them. He smiled—not with warmth, but with the slow curl of a predator. His lab coat was splattered with what looked suspiciously like blood.

Athena eyed him badly, before her eyes flicked to Mary.

Mary, who sat, hunched, her breathing shallow, one hand pressed against her abdomen. There was a strain around her eyes—pain, exhaustion, and something else. Fear.

Athena lowered her weapon slightly, eyes flicking between them, realization sinking. “What did you do to her?” she demanded.

500 chapters and a couple more to go, and we will be saying our goodbyes… or maybe not. Lol. Thanksss guyyss for thus far.

So, quick one… if you can, leave a character description in the character images displayed in the book profile.

500 chapters in… surely you would have something to say about Athena or Ewan?

Thank you!
