Chapter 460: Mole Strikes

Aiden understood Athena’s shock. He hadn’t believed it either when his search had yielded the same result—when he had watched the footage and seen Fiona, face hidden under a cap, walking briskly down an almost empty street, one of the many ghosted streets left by the event of the grey virus variant.

And like Athena now, he had been curious—how had Fiona found that formula? It could only mean one thing: she was with Mary and Matthew, the evil twins. The sponsor had somehow captured them, kept them together for easier monitoring.

Without much ado, he brought out his phone, played the recording, and handed it to Athena.

“Where? How…” she muttered, after watching the clip for the third time. The woman in the video was Fiona—no doubt about that. A thinner, more humbled version of her, considering the skinny jeans she wore.

“It was good we established that connection with your children’s friends,” Aiden said, breaking her silence. “They helped retrieve this, including pinpointing the location of the area in that video.” A short pause. “Their rates though… have you seen the amount they charge per hour?”

Athena had seen, and frankly didn’t care. “We can pay for it,” she said. “I’m sure even the president would want to do the same, considering what we’re battling is of national importance. Not that I’ll involve him—I don’t want to be caged by the government.”

Aiden nodded in approval. “So, do we commence the search on the location? It’s not that large. We can be done in less than a week, seeing that we’ll have to be discreet. We don’t know if there’s surveillance there.”

Athena agreed. “As discreet as possible. We can’t risk them moving again.”

A pause. Then her gaze softened. “I think this is good news. Only, I wish we could reach her…”

Fiona.

Was this her attempt at rebuilding bridges? Athena wasn’t sure—but she could say she was grateful. Grateful enough to forgive Fiona’s sins for saving her from the trap Kael had carefully orchestrated.

If not for Fiona, how would she have salvaged the situation? How would she have saved thousands of lives that had poured into the hospital just that week?

She was grateful too for Ewan’s discreet men, who had facilitated the transfer of vaccines to other facilities where they were needed. It had been a week of work—work, and more work—but somehow it felt easier knowing she had people with her. Her family.

“We’ll have to respect her decisions, I think,” Aiden said quietly. “We don’t know the condition they might be in—if they’re hostages too.”

Athena nodded. “Let’s hope she reaches out again. Till then, start the search. I would have loved to join you, but—”

“Of course not,” Aiden interrupted with a small smile. “You have your hands full here.”

Just as he spoke, her phone began to ring.

She frowned when she saw the caller ID—it was the president. She lifted it slightly toward Aiden. “Look who’s calling. Do you think something’s up?”

Aiden was just as surprised, his brows furrowed. “Pick up… let’s know what he wants.”

She did, and put it on speaker. “Good morning, Mr. President.”

“Good morning, Athena.”

Something was wrong. Terribly wrong. Athena concluded it immediately from his tone—sad, weary, on the brink of breaking. It was the first time she had heard the president sound anything but commanding or cheerful.

“What’s the problem, sir?” she asked, gentle but cautious.

“My wife,” he said shakily. “I think she’s been infected with the grey ailment. My two kids were coughing earlier this morning… I don’t know…”

Athena shut her eyes. They had done it. The mole—who had always slipped through their fingers—had struck again.

And once more, Athena found herself silently thanking Fiona.

What would have happened if she hadn’t listened to her grandmother’s advice? If she had allowed revenge to consume her and killed Fiona instead? She would have become the very thing she despised—and the world would have been consumed by the onslaught of the new variant.

“Aiden and I are coming,” she said firmly, looking at him. “You don’t have to worry. We’ll be there soonest.”

The moment the call ended, Athena didn’t waste a second. She grabbed her handbag and strode out of her office, Aiden following close behind.

“There’s no way he could have come here,” she said quickly, striding down the corridor. “It wouldn’t be a good image for the press. And there’s no time to arrange a covert retrieval from his house either…”

As she spoke, they approached her lab, where the vaccines were stored in protective custody.

“Part of Kael’s gifts, huh?” she muttered bitterly. “He must have thought the other patients weren’t dying fast enough.”

It made sense now.

The first round of patients were kept in another section of the hospital, still under mild containment—not only because she hadn’t announced the cure yet, but also because they weren’t ready to be released into the public.

And the first fellows who had been with the gang—unwitting scapegoats, who now hated the gang, were now offering information to the authorities.

Thanks to that, the government—alongside the Nimbus operation—had been raiding hideouts across the country.

“Well, too bad,” Athena murmured darkly. “They won’t be dying at all.”

And again, her mind turned to Kael—how she wanted to kill him slowly, starting with the fingers he used to send his threats.

Thirty minutes and one flight later, they were inside the president’s private residence.

One of the state security security men—one of the few still present—led them down the hallway, gloved and masked. The others must have been kept away, weary of the ever-present threat of infiltration.

Aiden and Athena, already suited up in containment gear, entered the room. They placed their medical bags on a table, eyes flicking to the president, who stood beside the large bed, watching his wife and children shiver under the covers.

He too was trembling.

Thank you, Fiona, Athena thought again, her heart steadying as she opened the bag.

It was time to work.
