Chapter 447: So far, So good.
So far, so good, Athena mused, dumping her buttocks on the couch, watching the results of her effort some feet away.
Even though she was bone-tired, she felt relieved seeing the cure—shared in see-through containers, arranged carefully on one of the high tables. Relieved and satisfied, really, that Kael’s plan hadn’t come to pass.
So far, so good too, because no incident had turned up again today; no more scouts, no new patients except the few that had come in the evening, according to the report Stella had sent to her a few hours ago.
And despite these; despite the fact that those sent to check out the areas and houses that hospitalized patients had come from had returned with the good news of no-spread, she had booked an appointment with a trusted news media to make the announcement of a new cure by the end of the week.
A cure which will be free for all—seeing as her grandfather had promised to sponsor the treatments.
She smirked faintly, leaning back against the couch, exhaustion clinging to her bones. That would drive the gang and its sponsor crazy for sure.
Her phone buzzed in her hand, the vibration rattling softly against her palm. Without looking, she knew it was Antonio calling.
It had started first with the cake day check-in. She shook her head in disbelief, lips parting with a weary chuckle. How he believed there would be a cake day when things were on fire eluded her. Or was it because the matter hadn’t affected any of his loved ones? Did that explain his laissez-faire attitude?
She had been so pissed off that she didn’t tell him about her grandmother. And from the nature of his texts so far, she believed he was still in the dark.
“Hello…” she answered when the call came for the second time, her voice soft but lacking enthusiasm.
“Athena, you haven’t been with your phone?”
“I have been working… sorry about that,” Athena added the last phrase to ease out whatever rough patch there was.
“That’s alright. How is it going then? Any luck with the cure?”
“Yes. I think it is coming around. What about you? How is work today?”
Antonio snorted softly on the other end. “Just okay. Just concerned about you… missing you too… Where are you? Can I see you tonight?”
Athena’s eyes found the clock hanging on the far wall. Just a few minutes past eight. “I don’t think so.”
She sighed tiredly, pressing a hand to her temple. “I need rest. To sleep too.”
“That’s alright too. You can camp with me at my place… would let you sleep real good… massages…”
His voice had become husky, low and tempting, but Athena only wanted to sleep on her own bed—maybe with her children flanking her. Albeit, she chuckled softly for the benefit of Antonio.
“Maybe next time? I’m too stomped to even move… already half asleep…” she murmured, not wanting him to even make the offer to come pick her.
A sigh echoed from the other end. “Okay then. A video call?”
Athena, seeing that he was bent on spending some time with her no matter how tired she was, agreed, not ready for another set of tantrums that was peculiar to him.
“Just give me a few minutes, let me prep,” she said, laughing mechanically when he teased her before ending the call.
Prep for a video call with him? She rolled her eyes as she got to her feet. She wasn’t a teenager. She only wanted to leave the lab to avoid more questions. The sitting room at least looked less sterile.
“Wow… you really do look tired,” Antonio started when the call connected.
Athena only exhaled, eyeing him with mild amusement. The one who had prepped for the call was clearly him—with his upper body bare, hair wet like he had just stepped out of the shower, and his lips glossy under the light.
“And you look prepared…” she teased out her thoughts, smiling when he laughed before winking at her suggestively.
“Always ready for my love,” he purred. His eyes roved the entirety of her face slowly, then her neck, brows pinching when he noticed that he couldn’t see farther than that.
“Are you shy, my love?”
Athena snorted. “Shy? Please… Tell me about your day?” She swiftly changed the topic.
She was, after all, wearing just a singlet—no bra—but she wasn’t in the mood for the game Antonio wanted.
He pouted, but he gave her the answer she wanted. “Fine… just hectic. Worse, your friend didn’t deem it fit to come to work…” a pause followed. “Now that I think of it, he seemed uncomfortable during your party…”
Athena shrugged lightly, pretending indifference. “Maybe stomach ache?”
Antonio smirked. “Not surprised. His body can’t take his ego too.”
Athena didn’t laugh. She rather asked about his family next. Zane’s matter was nothing to be joked about.
“Fine. My father wants me back though… my mother has resorted to threats…”
Athena smiled softly. “Maybe you should pay them a visit before they blame me for your absence?”
Antonio scoffed. “They wouldn’t dare. But that’s by the way…” a pause—an intentional one—where he winked at her and stared sensually through the screen. “Let me have a peek, honey…”
Athena pretended to do just that, batting her eyelids dramatically, right before she frowned and looked away.
“What is the matter?” he asked, his tone playful yet impatient.
“I think someone is knocking…” she paused, then got to her feet. “Continue later? Maybe tomorrow…”
Antonio exhaled heavily, loudly, making her laugh.
“Don’t worry, big bear. When all this is over, you can peek all you want.”
That seemed to cheer him up. He blew her a kiss and hung up, leaving Athena alone to a silent house.
Sighing in relief, she slumped back onto the soft sofa, picking an apple from the plate on the table. Munching on it, she continued her appraisal of the day, turning aside, lying down on the long sofa with her head resting on a throw pillow.
Everything seemed to be checking out—well, except Spider’s bloodwork, which stood out like a sore thumb. She wished she could receive an anonymous tip for that too; the chances were zero to none, she was aware.
Taking deep breaths twice, she let the matter go. She would return to it later, seeing as Spider was getting fine. She would pour all her energy into the grey matter, and the gang, and finding the sponsor.
And there was the company merging too. She needed to talk with Ethan.
So that she wouldn’t forget, she picked her phone and added it to her calendar, before setting it down with a quiet sigh and closing her eyes, the hum of exhaustion settling into her bones.
