Chapter 823: Age: Four. Chaos level: Catastrophic.
Four years later —
It was one of the usual fine evenings.
Mr. Jones noted the time on his watch, nodded to himself, then turned toward the maid.
“It’s time. Prepare the snacks and send them to Little Miss’s room.”
The maid nodded immediately and headed towards the kitchen.
This was routine by now —evening snacks for the little, adorable Winslow princess —Elara Winslow, age: four, chaos level: catastrophic.
Mr. Jones sighed fondly. “She must be painting again,” he murmured. “Or experimenting.”
The maid froze as if a chill ran down her spine. “E-Experimenting?”
Mr. Jones gave her a grim, sympathetic look. “Yes. Brace yourself.”
Before the maid could ask what he meant, the front door slammed open.
Bang!
Jason stormed in, hair messy, glasses askew, and face burning red with fury.
“I SWEAR ON EVERYTHING SACRED IN MEDICINE — THIS CHILD IS A MENACE!”
Mr. Jones didn’t even blink. “Young Miss again?”
Jason pointed at him dramatically. “YES! Your little princess has —has —RUINED ANOTHER MARRIAGE PROSPECT!”
Mr. Jones cleared his throat and rubbed his nose with little awkwardness. “Ah. The fourth one this year.”
Jason’s eyes almost bulged. “FOURTH! You are counting?!”
Before Mr. Jones could answer, footsteps came from the staircase, making him pause. They turned and saw Aiden walking down, his sleeves rolled up, looking slightly tired from a day of working at home. His expression soured instantly at the sight of Jason.
“What are you doing here today?” Aiden’s brows pulled low. “I didn’t invite you for dinner.”
Jason scoffed. “Who is here for dinner?”
Aiden frowned more. “If not for the dinner, why are you here?”
“Of course—” Jason jabbed a finger toward the ceiling. ” —for your adorably devious daughter!”
Aiden bristled. “Watch your words, Jason!”
However, Jason didn’t back down at all. He squared his shoulders. “Why don’t you watch your little angel instead? She ruined ANOTHER date I had lined up today!”
Aiden glared. Tucking his hands inside his dress pants’ pockets, he said, “Then maybe your taste in women is the issue.”
“It wasn’t!” Jason held up a small glittery object. “She sent the lady this sticker —THIS — with a note saying: ‘Miss, please don’t take my Uncle Jason. He already promised to make me cakes every week. Sharing him is not allowed’.”
Aiden blinked. Then cleared his throat. “So? Wasn’t she simply expressing her preferences?”
“EXPRESSING —?! Really? Is that what you think?” Jason looked like he was just one gasp away from collapsing.
Before Aiden could retort or reason, a calm voice cut through the tension.
“What’s going on here?”
They turned to see Arwen walking into the hall, elegant and composed from her company meeting. Her presence alone was enough for both men to straighten. In all these years, she hasn’t changed much, but her aura has upgraded a lot.
Jason pointed at Aiden and easily blamed him. “It’s his fault. He has spoiled his daughter a lot —to the point where I am the one suffering.”
“You are suffering on your own. Don’t put it on my princess.” Aiden defended.
Arwen sighed. “I left for just a few hours. And you two are behaving like my children instead of being fathers and uncles.”
Jason huffed. “I AM the victim here!”
Aiden crossed his arms. “No. You deserve it.”
“That tiny terrorist ruined my date again!” Jason snapped.
“She is just a child,” Aiden defended smoothly again. “A brilliant one. With excellent judgement.”
Jason actually looked offended. “How is sabotaging my relationship an excellent judgment?!” He exasperated.
Before Arwen could intervene, a soft set of footsteps approached from the stairs.
Little Elara appeared —dressed in cute pleated shorts and a strap top. Her brown hair was in messy curls, cheeks carrying a tint of rosiness, paint smudged on her fingers, and eyes sparkling with guilt-free innocence.
“Uncle Jason~!” she chirped, running towards him with all her might.
Jason stiffened. He wanted to stay angry. He really did. But —
But Elara extended her little arms and hugged his leg tightly.
Arwen looked at the scene and cleared her throat. “Elara Winslow. What did you do today?
Elara froze immediately.
Unlike with everyone else —where she was bold, clever and unstoppable —in front of her mother, she became thoughtful … logical … careful.
She looked up at Arwen, blinking slowly. “Mama, I did painting … a lot of paintings. See…” She showed her hands that carried her evidence.
Arwen wanted to smile at her little action. But she held it in and asked more seriously. “I will ask you again, cuddlebug. Tell Mama, what did you do today?” Her eyes darted toward Jason, hinting her enough to tell what she was asking about.
Little Elara understood. She looked at her uncle Jason once again sweetly before turning back to her mother. “Mama … I only told the truth.”
“What truth?” Arwen asked gently.
“That Uncle Jason is mine,” Elara said, sounding really serious.
Jason choked. Aiden coughed to hide a laugh.
Arwen pinched the bridge of her nose. “Elara …”
Elara fidgeted, then said with genuine, heartfelt sincerity, “Mama … if Uncle Jason marries someone … won’t he love me less? Won’t he stop visiting me? Won’t he forget the promise he made to always bake me cakes and take me to the park and teach me about stars?”
Her voice was small —too earnest —too soft.
Jason’s heart melted into a puddle. Completely. In that moment of melting, he would have gladly taken an oath to never marry if she had asked him to. Fortunately, she didn’t.
He crouched down in front of her. “Elara … sweetheart … my little pumpkin … I could never stop loving you. Even if I get married.”
Elara blinked at him. Then narrowed her eyes suspiciously. “But you might love her more. Uncle Jacob loves Aunt Anna more. Dad loves Mama more.”
“Princess,” Aiden at once interrupted. “I love you the same.”
Elara turned and looked at her father, winking at him secretly. And her secret message was delivered, making Aiden go speechless.
She then turned back to Jason and continued. “Men change after getting married. I fear Uncle Jason would change, too.”
Jason felt his heart clench softly. He shook his head. “Impossible. I only love my little pumpkin.”
She gasped dramatically, covering her mouth. “Really?”
“Really,” Jason nodded to her.
She launched herself into his arms.
And just like that —all of Jason’s fury evaporated.
Aiden crossed his arms smugly. “See? She did nothing wrong.”
Jason glared at him halfheartedly. “I am still teaching her proper boundaries!”
Arwen sighed and shook her head. “You all are just spoiling her too much —to an extent where she is boldly fooling you all.”
“No, she is too sweet to do that.” This time, it was Jason to defend. Looking at Arwen, he said, “She just loves me too much and could bear to lose me.”
Arwen was speechless. Could she say more? Absolutely not.
Elara, still in his arms, pulled a little to pat his cheeks sweetly. “It’s okay, Uncle Jason. I will pick a better lady for you the next time.”
Jason froze.
Aiden choked, and Arwen chuckled, shaking her head, “You guys could gladly go ahead. I am not ready for this level of chaos.”
Mr. Jones whispered from behind, “Age: Four. Chaos level: Catastrophic.”
Jason groaned.
Elara beamed.
And the Winslow Residence remained, as always —a place of love, trouble, and adorable disasters.
