Chapter 821: Congratulations, it’s a —
Soon, the lights changed, and the room brightened under the overhead lights — a stark, unforgiving white.
Machines beeped at steady intervals, and sterile air mixed with the subtle scent of antiseptic filled the space. Everything was too clean, too still —until Arwen’s first true contraction tore through that stillness like lightning.
“Arghhh!!!!”
Her back arched, and her hand flew out blindly.
Aiden caught it instantly, and the world inside him snapped. “Moon!”
Her soft breaths turned into sharp gasps as she tried her best to contain the patience that only felt slipping.
Her knuckles whitened as sweat dampened her forehead.
Aiden stared at her deeply. His pupils dilated more —the darkness swirling at the edges of his irises deepening into something feral.
“Husband …” Arwen panted, grabbing his wrist. Her nails dug into his skin. “It’s … coming again — ahhh!”
Her voice broke off as another contraction slammed through her. This time, she didn’t just hold his wrist; she clutched it hard —almost strangling it.
Aiden took in a sharp breath. Her grip was so strong that it could have easily drawn blood, but he didn’t so much as flinch in response. He just stepped closer and cupped the back of her, steadying her.
“Moon,” he whispered, “I am here. I am right here. With you.” His voice was anything but calm. It was dripping with helplessness that was ripping him apart from the inside.
The obstetrician studied the situation and tried to guide Arwen’s breathing. “Mrs. Winslow, breathe slowly. In through your nose —”
Her words halted halfway when Aiden turned and glared at her. “Don’t tell her to breathe slowly. She is breathing.”
The doctor flinched slightly, but then carefully said, “M-Mr. Winslow, she will hyperventilate if she panics —”
“She won’t panic.” He then turned back and leaned down to Arwen, brushing her cheek with utmost gentleness and care. “Moon, look at me. Only me.”
Another contraction hit, and Arwen screamed —a sound Aiden would remember for the rest of his life.
Her hand flew up and grabbed him by the collar, pulling him closer. Her breath came in broken gasps against his lips, her eyes glassy with pain.
“It’s hurting … Ide. It’s hurting a lot—”
Aiden’s jaw tightened so brutally that his muscles trembled. “I know,” he nodded to her. “I know, Moon. I am here. I swear I am here.” He didn’t know what else he could do to help her in the situation. But seeing her like this was killing him. Every second of her agony was like a blade carving him open.
She pulled him down again —as if trying to anchor herself. As if holding him to her like that made the pain a little bearable for her.
Across the room, Jason finished instructing the nurses. His expression remained serious, but calm.
“Just proceed as normal,” he said, his gaze darting to look towards his friend, who seemed just a step away from destroying the entire world, not just his hospital. “Keep the environment steady. Don’t let him get too overwhelmed, or you will all suffer for it.”
They nodded, and Jason turned to leave.
“Aiden,” he said, his voice soft enough not to trigger him, “I will be right outside. If anything —”
“Go.” Aiden didn’t even look at him. “She needs silence.”
Jason opened his mouth again to speak something. However, he closed it without saying anything. Nodding, he turned to leave, but on the way out, he muttered, “May the heavens save all of you. Good luck!”
—————
As the seconds passed, time felt blurring.
The contractions grew closer and harsher. Arwen felt like the world was splitting apart inside her. Her breaths grew uneven, and between the waves of that unbearable pain, her eyes fluttered, unfocused.
Aiden held her the entire time.
Only, she held him back as though she was dealing punishment. One that she couldn’t bear to take alone.
At one time, she pulled his arm so hard that he almost stumbled, losing his balance.
“Ide …” she rasped. “I can’t —”
His voice came deep the next instant as though a dark threat to the universe itself. “Don’t say that, Moon. You can. And I am not letting you do it alone.”
“It hurts —” she cried, squeezing his hand so hard that his bones cracked.
But he didn’t blink. He didn’t flinch. He didn’t snap, nor did he pull away.
Instead, he brought his forehead to hers. “If I could take it all from you,” his breath trembled, “I would. I swear, Moon, I would take every single pain. I wouldn’t let you go through it.”
She knew. She looked in his eyes as her chest rose and fell unevenly.
Another contraction hit, and she screamed again.
Aiden snapped. He turned towards the nurses and yelled, “Do something!” His voice boomed, cracking like thunder. “She is in pain!”
“W-we are doing everything, sir —” the nurse stuttered.
Aiden’s fingers clenched, resisting a primal urge that was building inside him. “Then … do more,” he growled.
Arwen unclasped her fingers only to clasp it tighter again. A violent contraction twisted through her body, and she practically pierced her nails through his skin, drawing his blood.
“H-husband!” she cried.
The single cry was enough to shatter the last thread of composure inside him.
“Moon …” His voice trembled so heavily that it broke into a whisper. “I am here. Just look at me. Please —just look at me. Hold onto me.”
The obstetrician checked again. Confirming, she said, “She is fully dilated now. It’s time.”
Aiden’s breath froze.
“Mrs. Winslow,” the doctor instructed. “When the next contraction comes, you will need to push.”
Arwen swallowed and nodded.
But Aiden’s body went rigid.
Push.
Pain.
More pain.
He felt dizzy, furious, helpless and terrified —all at once.
When he realized, he turned to Arwen. “Moon …” his voice cracked. “Please, don’t go through this alone. Look at me.”
“I am not —alone …” she managed to say, panting. “You are right here. And … and I am torturing you enough so that you don’t feel left out.” She tried to smile through her pain, but then her face twisted as the next contraction came and —she pushed.
Aiden nearly roared. He reached to hold her.
The doctor encouraged. “Good! Again —push!”
Arwen cried out —raw, broken and loud.
Aiden’s eyes darkened dangerously until it went all pitch black. He looked like a beast caged in a room too small for his anguish. He leaned down and whispered against her forehead. “Moon … I am sorry. I am so sorry. It’s all my fault. All my fault.”
She tried again. And again.
Minutes started feeling like years.
The heart monitor beeped rapidly. The nurses rushed and the doctor’s voice grew urgent.
“One last push, Mrs. Winslow. You need to do it now.”
Arwen drew in a shaking breath —and nodded. Her fingers dug into Aiden’s skin like claws. She screamed. And then —
A different cry filled the room —soft, new, alive.
The doctor lifted the tiny baby, her voice full of warmth. “It’s a —”
The voice only got vague because Aiden didn’t hear anything. His eyes were on Arwen watching her as her head fell limply to the side.
“Moon?” he called, panicked.
She didn’t answer. Her eyes slid shut, her face drenched in sweat completely.
“H-hey, Moon?” his voice trembled, panic flooding every inch of him. “Arwen!” he cupped her face.
The monitors beeped, and the nurses rushed.
But amid everything, Aiden just felt his entire world collapsing.
—————
Outside,
Jason was pacing back and forth. He hadn’t left. He was there, waiting as though any moment he would have to rush inside to pull Aiden out.
He was not just scared for the people inside. He was also scared for the entire situation. He feared, seeing Arwen suffering so much pain, Aiden might go insane to destroy each and everything in the world.
“What should I do?” he muttered to himself. “It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have agreed to Arwen and allowed him to stay inside. I should have dragged him out with me. Only then the doctors would have able to focus on Arwen and the baby.”
“Dr. Clark,” Emyr whispered from the side. “You can stop blaming yourself.”
Jason turned to him, with a furrow of confusion between his brows.
Emyr read through his expression and explained, “Even if you would have tried, you wouldn’t been able to do it.”
After all, dragging Aiden away from Arwen was close to impossible.
Jason sighed, accepting that. He knew that as well, but still he couldn’t help but hold onto the sheer possibility that he could have managed it.
At this moment, footsteps approaching from the distance of the corridor was heard and they turned to look, only to find Morgan and Idris rushing.
Their brows drawn in deep concern.
While Morgan walked with his cane with William following him, Idris was walking alone, looking desperate to know about his daughter.
“How is she?” Idris asked the moment he reached close to the delivery wing.
Jason looked at him and then slowly began to explain, “She is in labor, possibly —”
And just then, the ripe cry of the new life was heard, pausing all of them in their tracks.
