Chapter 817: Did she push you?
Emily turned to look and paused. This wasn’t her first time seeing Aiden, but there was something about his looks that charmed her all over again. She couldn’t bring herself to look away.
Aiden’s gaze, however, never left Arwen. He walked to her, taking long strides as though he couldn’t bear to stay apart from her for another second.
“What are you doing here?” Arwen asked when he came and stood in front of her, looking her from head to toe as though making sure she was alright. “Weren’t you supposed to be at the company?”
“I was always supposed to be with you,” he said before gently pushing her back to sit comfortably on the couch. “And may I ask why you have been standing when you could actually sit?”
Arwen stared at him and pursed her lips. “If you keep on frowning like this over every little thing, you might end up looking older than Grandpa.” She reached and brushed her finger over his forehead, trying to ease the evident creases. “And I can’t keep sitting all the time. That’s why I got up to stretch myself.”
Although she said it like that, Aiden still didn’t look convinced. His gaze darted to look down at her feet, only to frown seeing them swollen.
This was one of the reasons why he had rushed here. He knew she would realize it until the night.
Looking up, he pursed his lips. “Your feet are already swollen.”
“Really? Is it?” Arwen blinked before glancing down at her feet. “Oh, I didn’t feel anything. Trust me.”
Aiden didn’t say anything. He just kneeled in front of her and slowly unbuckled her block heels.
“Wait,” she gasped, trying to pull away her legs. But he held her firm. “We aren’t alone, Ide. There are people around. What will they say?”
“Your feet need a massage,” he said, and then slowly moved his fingers to press skillfully on the points that would instantly make her feel better.
The attendants around were all in awe. They all stopped and watched, slowly whispering among themselves.
“Aww, can someone pinch me? How can a man be this handsome yet so caring?”
“I have never seen a man this doting towards his wife. Are all rich men like this?”
Another one clicked her tongue once. “I don’t think so. Women from wealthy families are most dissatisfied with their marriages. If their husbands were like him, why would they be so upset?”
“This lady is truly lucky. Just by the way her husband looks at her could make anyone envious.”
Emily heard all these whispers, and her fingers only tightened. Just now, she was mocking Arwen, telling her how her husband would run away at the sight of her ugly face. But little did she expect that right after she said that, she would have to eat her own words.
‘No,’ she muttered to herself. ‘I can’t believe any man could still love a woman in such an ugly state. It must be merely for show.’ Her assumption eased her a little, but at the same time, the urge to prove it right simmered inside her.
Her gaze darted to look at Arwen, and she smirked. Arwen had the looks that she could never match. But right now, all her charms seemed dull behind her grown weight and clear chubbiness. And that was only a boost to her confidence.
‘Blame yourself, Arwen,” she whispered to herself internally, shaking her head. “If you hadn’t snatched my opportunity to outshine you that night, I would have considered not snatching your husband today. But too bad you deserve ever retribution for making me a laughingstock.’
Arwen’s instinct made her react to Emily’s gaze, and she turned to glance her way, only to notice her smirk and eyes glinting with something. Her brows furrowed, but she couldn’t guess what she was upto until she saw her turning to look Aiden’s way.
“Mr. Winslow,” Emily called coquettishly, “I am Emily, Arwen’s cousin. I have seen you before, but I didn’t get a chance to properly introduce myself to you.”
Aiden heard that, but he didn’t turn to even look at her. His eyes remained at Arwen’s feet as he slowly massaged them.
Emily frowned a little when she didn’t receive any response from him. But then she thought of something and spoke again, “You truly look like a caring husband. But …” she paused only to flick a gaze to Arwen. “How good it would have been if Arwen had acted as a sensible wife as well.”
Aiden’s fingers paused, and he finally turned to look towards Emily.
Arwen also blinked, amused at Emily’s words. But she didn’t speak. She wanted to hear what Emily was upto speak next.
Finally seeing Aiden looking her way, Emily felt victorious. Under his deep gaze, she couldn’t help but blush. Her hand moved to tug her hair behind her ears in a slow manner. “I mean, don’t get me wrong. Arwen is my cousin and I don’t intend anything wrong to her, but in her condition like this, she could have decided tos tay at home instead of coming out like this. I mean, why did she choose to embarrass you in front of so many people when she could have easily saved you from it?”
Aiden’s eyes turned cold. “Who are you to decide whether my wife stays at home or goes out to have fun?” His voice was low, but it carried a sharpness that instantly made Emily take a step back.
She flinched, clearly looking taken aback by his words. She never thought that he would cross-question her like that.
“I-I just feel that she could have been more sensible during her pregnancy. After all, stepping out while looking like that … it could only make people feel utterly disgusting.” Emily stuttered a little, but she was too stubborn to learn her lesson.
“Utterly disgusting to who?” Aiden stood up, turning towards her with clear displeasure written across his face. His height suddenly intimidatingly towering over Emily, casting a dark shadow over her entire frame. “If you are talking about yourself, I could find a solution to that.”
Emily stepped back, not understanding what he meant. But Aiden had already made his move.
Before she could even question what he meant, two bodyguards stepped forward, already dragging her away.
“You —what are you doing?” She resisted; however, the men’s hold on her remained firm. She looked at Aiden and said again, “Mr. Winslow, you don’t have to act like that. Arwen is already looking like this. Don’t you think it’s time for you to find someone better?”
Aiden’s fingers curled into a fist. He was about to step forward, but right then, Arwen grabbed his hand. When he turned to look back, she shook her head at him, asking him to let go. He frowned, but turning to his men, he simply signalled them to drag her away.
Only when Emily was dragged away did he turn to look back at Arwen. “She didn’t deserve that kindness.”
Arwen smiled and shook her head again. “She deserved it. I don’t adore her, but recently she has lost a lot, so let’s not add to that. Let her find her happiness in these little fights. She, anyway, can’t do anything worse than these little fights.”
Aiden didn’t argue. But he didn’t even say that he would let it simply slide. His gaze dropped again to her feet, and he asked, “Is it feeling better?”
She smiled and nodded. “You never let it get worse. I am fine, and it’s not hurting at all.” She then patted the seat beside her. “Come and sit down now. You already made enough fans. I can’t bear to see more added to the list.” Her gaze meaningfully darted to scan all the attendants around, who were standing and watching then … especially her handsome husband.
The moment her gaze met with theirs, they averted it and got back to their job.
Gianna, who had gone to try on the wedding down, came back. She paused when she saw Aiden sitting beside her. “Uncle … when did you arrive?” she stuttered, looking at Arwen.
She smiled at her friend and responded, “Not very long before. Just after you went to change.”
“Did I do anything wrong?” she asked, partially scared. After all, she stepped away from Arwen when Emily was still around. Did something happen that made her uncle arrive like that?
Arwen held back a chuckle. She sometimes felt really amused. Gianna was usually badass. She wasn’t scared of anyone and had kicked and slapped Ryan several times, yet in front of Aiden, she looked like a kitten who hasn’t grown her claws and teeth.
“Something really wrong happened,” Arwen said, making her face go all serious. Her gaze glanced at Gianna from head to toe, and she clicked her tongue, shaking her head. “You did something really wrong.”
“Did Emily make a move on you?” Gianna asked, her heart dropping. “I told you you should have let me teach her the needed manners when he dared to push you.”
Arwen paused, her eyes immediately turning towards Aiden, only to find his jaw look extra sharp as though he had clenched them.
“Did she push you?” he asked, his voice low, carrying an edge.
