Chapter 812: They will misunderstand.
“Sir, you can’t sit here,” Zenith said, an obvious frown settling between her brows. Her fingers were already clenching around her pants, not understanding what Ryan was intending to do there.
He not just showed up in the same restaurant she was supposed to be in, but he was now also asking if he could join them at their table.
Wasn’t this already too much out of line? What did he actually want when he made that request?
Zenith wanted to ask, but she couldn’t put that simply in her words, so she refused it straight away. But little did she expect Ryan to counter her refusal … demanding an answer to —
“Why?” Ryan asked without any hesitation, turning to look her way, his gaze holding a glare of clear displeasure —one that Zenith couldn’t understand. “Why can’t I?” He let his gaze flicker to the empty chair next to her. “As far as I can see, there is enough space to accommodate me here.”
Zenith’s gaze darted to look at the same chair, and the frown between her brows only deepened. She turned and stared back at him, incredulously. “Because I am out here for some personal thing, and your inclusion would really suit.”
“Personal thing?” Ryan gritted.
She nodded. “Yes, a personal thing,” she repeated and then turned and looked toward David. “I am here on a date with him. If you join us at our table, it won’t be very comfortable.”
Ryan’s jaws tightened and his fingers clenched so hard that his knuckles turned white.
Zenith glanced at him and clearly noted the change in his expression. “Sir, I mean —” she was about to speak when a voice made her pause.
“Secretary Zane, you are also here?”
She turned to look only to see Michael walking their way, his laptop in hand.
He smiled at her in pleasant surprise before adding to say, “I didn’t expect to see you here.” His gaze flicked to look around the empty restaurant, and suddenly, realization dawned upon him. He glanced at Ryan before glancing back at Zenith. “No doubt! No doubt, Sir asked me to make the call.”
Zenith felt confused. “Call?” she asked.
Michael nodded. “Yes, call the restaurant manager to ask him to accept another customer,” he said, only to make Zenith glance towards Ryan again. “Sir must have seen you walking in. And that’s why he asked me to do that.”
David heard that and smiled gently. Then, standing up from his chair, he said, “That’s really thoughtful of you, Mr. Foster. I truly didn’t expect a CEO to be so considerate. Thank you for your kind gesture.” He extended his hand out again, but once again, Ryan didn’t acknowledge it. In the end, David only pulled his hand back.
And just as he did that, Ryan spoke, “I needed your assistance over something urgent. If not for that, I wouldn’t have asked to join the table to interrupt the … date you are on.” He then gazed at Michael as though asking him to speak.
At first, Michael didn’t understand, but when Ryan’s gaze started piercing him, he quickly nodded, accepting it. “Yes, yes! I was stuck with something for a while now, and that needed to be finished the earliest.” He looked at Zenith with confused but hopeful eyes.
Before Zenith could say anything, David spoke from the side.
“If it’s really that urgent, please don’t hold back on my account.”
Zenith looked at him with a subtle furrowed brow. But he only smiled and nodded to her in reassurance. “It’s fine. I don’t mind. I know you are passionate about your work, and I really respect you for that. We can have dinner once you finish the work; I can wait.”
Hearing him say that, Zenith’s gaze softened at him. She might not know him much, but what she is learning about him is just making her more and more appreciative of him. Nodding to him, she said, “Thank you.”
David just smiled at her, shaking his head at nothingness. He turned to Ryan only to see him holding a glare at him. He didn’t understand the reason behind it, but he gestured him kindly. “Please, Mr. Foster, take a seat. I might not repay your kindness, but this is the least I could do.”
Michael nodded and was about to walk to take the chair next to Zenith. However, just when he would have stepped in and sat, Ryan stepped in and took the chair.
“Take the next one,” Ryan said.
Michael paused for a second, but soon gave a soft hm and reached for the next chair. “Haha … I was anyway about to take this one.” And with that, he settled down at another one, trying to make the whole thing less awkward than it felt.
“What were you stuck in?” Zenith asked, not waiting another second. Her attempt was not just to finish things up as soon as possible but to make her heart less audible. She feared that sitting so close to Ryan, where their arms were almost touching, would make him hear how her heart was thumping inside her chest. “Since it’s urgent, let’s not wait.”
Michael nodded and opened the laptop. However, there was nothing he was stuck on, so he wasn’t very sure what he should give her to solve. His fingers moved over the keypad, scrolling and scrolling through the screen. “I think … I think —”
“Michael, what’s wrong?” Feeling something wasn’t right, Zenith asked. She tried to lean in and check on, but halfway she realized that the more she tried to lean forward, the closer she got to Ryan.
She quickly pulled away and straightened herself. Her movements felt deliberate and clearly noticeable. She turned to Ryan, only to find him staring at her.
“Give the laptop to me. I will see it myself.” She said, avoiding Ryan’s gaze. Getting up, she grabbed the laptop and brought it back in front of him to check. Her gaze squinted at the screen as she tried to read through the details.
Her brows furrowed as she checked through it. Not because there was something wrong with it, but because there was nothing wrong with it. She lifted her gaze and glanced at Michael to find him looking at her apologetically.
“I —” Michael tried to speak.
However, just as he would have, Ryan reached and grabbed Zenith’s hand on the table.
Zenith froze at his simple yet unexpected touch. She turned to him and tried to pull her hand away, but right then, he stood up and pulled her up with him. “Come with me,” he said, and then, without giving her any chance to refuse, he tugged her away from the table.
Michael watched, not able to blink. Only when he saw them disappear at the corner could he bring himself to blink and adjust himself. Looking at David, she laughed awkwardly and explained, “Haha … this project has been under Secretary Zenith all this time. I have only recently joined and taken over it. They must have a few details to discuss. I hope you don’t misunderstand.”
David’s gaze didn’t move. He kept his eyes fixed in the direction where Ryan had led Zenith to. A soft smile curved his lips as he shook his head. “There is nothing to misunderstand in this. Everything has been very clear. A person would be blind not to see it.”
“Huh?” Michael scratched the corner of his brow, pretending to be oblivious. “Sorry, I couldn’t get you.”
“Really?” David turned and quirked his brow at him, amusement flashing in his gaze.
Michael was at once flustered. He didn’t respond. Instead, he just looked away.
Meanwhile, Ryan tugged Zenith all the way to the inside of the restaurant. She tried to break free, but his fingers around her wrist simply wouldn’t budge.
“Sir, where are you taking me?” she asked, struggling to pull her hand off his hold. “If there is anything you want to discuss, you can do it in front of Michael. You don’t have to take me away from the table like this. This will make them misunderstand.”
“…” Ryan didn’t respond. Instead, he only pushed her inside the restroom before stepping in and closing the door after him.
Zenith looked around and frowned before glancing back at Ryan. “Sir —”
“What were you saying?” Ryan asked, walking towards her, only to make her step back instinctively. “What will make them misunderstand?”
Zenith felt her words stuck in her throat. She cleared it to answer, trying her best to keep her confidence and calm in pace. “This … you taking me away from the … table like this.” She didn’t want to look faltering, but it was feeling too difficult when Ryan was closing the distance between them.”
“I … I am here with David. He might misunderstand this and —” Her back pressed against the hard surface, and she turned to find the wall, already cutting her chase.
“And?”
She turned to look back only to find Ryan already in front of her. There was barely any distance between them.
“And what, Zenith?” he urged, his hands already reaching brush away the hair that she hadn’t yet realized on her face. “Tell me … hmm?”
