Chapter 773: You can’t avoid me forever.

Morning turned into afternoon, when Ryan, Zenith and Michael finally arrived at the company.

While Ryan headed straight to his office, Zenith paused by her desk with Michael behind her. For a moment, she forgot about him. She took the files and was heading to sort them out when she saw him and was reminded again.

Closing her eyes briefly, she chided herself before quickly turning to him to say, “Michael, I am really sorry. I almost forgot about you. I still have to get you into my habit. I hope you don’t mind it.”

Michael smiled politely and shook his head. “No, Ms. Zane. I completely understand it. It’s still my first day, so …”

Zenith smiled. “Everyone had their first days. Don’t worry, you will be able to manage everything here soon. But before that, let me help you get the desk first.” She turned around to check, and soon her eyes caught an empty desk parallel to hers.

She pointed at it and said, “You can take that one and arrange it as per your preference.”

Michael turned to look and nodded. When he turned back to her, she asked, “No, you tell me, you do want to take a seat there and rest for a while? Or would you like to jump straight to work?”

He still looked young, so Zenith didn’t want to make it too hard for him on the very first day.

“I will get to the work.”

“That’s better,” she appreciated before looking down at the file in her hand. “Let me brief you about this project, then. Once you know about it, you can take it to the sir. He would be asking for it soon.”

He nodded, and Zenith slowly started briefing about every detail that was crucial. Once she was done, she handed the file to him and cued him. “Now, you are prepared. Take it to the sir. And if he asks you anything, you know what you have to answer.

Michael nodded and took the file from her.

Meanwhile, in the office, Ryan was about to ring Zenith up to bring the recent project file when the knock at the door interrupted him. “Come in,” he said, and Michael entered.

“Sir, I brought the recent project file. Secretary Zane said you would be looking for this.”

Ryan’s brows drew in a tight frown as his gaze darted to look at the file with unconcealed fury.

Meanwhile, at the same time at East Serenity Residence —

After giving Brenda her medicines, Margaret was helping her to bed when Xander came knocking at the door. She frowned a little and asked him to wait; however, Brenda noticed it and asked him to enter the room instead.

“What is it, Xander?” Brenda asked.

Xander’s gaze darted to look at Margaret with a hesitation clearly evident in them. “Madam, you just took the medicine. Please rest. I was just here to inform Ms Marie about something. I will do it later, it’s not very important.”

Brenda stared at Margaret before turning again to Xander. “Why do you have to do it later when you could do it now. Margaret is here. Tell her whatever you are here for.”

Xander still looked hesitant. He glanced at Margaret, seeking her understanding. But before Margaret could help him, Brenda spoke, killing any such possibility there.

“Xander, I am not dead yet. Since when do I have to repeat my instructions?”

“Madam, I didn’t mean that.”

“Then report whatever you here for.” Brenda pressed on, not letting it be forgotten.

Xander sighed internally before finally speaking about it. “I just received a call from the society guard post. They said Ms. Davies’s car is here and she is heading in the direction of the villa.”

Margaret frowned the moment she heard Catrin’s name. Her eyes turned to look at Brenda. Since the moment Arwen left, she wasn’t looking very good, and at this time, Catrin’s arrival wasn’t at all good news.

“Madam, I will go downstairs and stop her,” she said, already turning to head out.

However, before she could even take a step, Brenda halted her. “Stop, Margaret.”

Margaret paused in her steps and turned to look back with a frown between her brow —one that held the creases of her worry and concern. “But Madam, you can’t meet her in a state like this. It will affect your health and …”

“Do you think with her already here, you could stop her?” Brenda interrupted her. Her voice might be soft and frail due to her illness, but it still held the same confidence that could easily make anyone reconsider their words, thoughts and plans.

Margaret’s frown deepened. “I will try my best, Madam. I will tell her that you aren’t at home. She would leave after that.”

“Since she is here, she might already know that I am here. You can’t lie to her.”

“But —”

“Enough, Margaret,” Brenda interrupted her. “There is no need for you to get so concerned. I am fine and I can meet her. And to be exact, it’s time I meet her.”

“Oh, so you finally know you can’t avoid me forever?”

Catrin’s voice cut in, making both Xander and Margaret turn and look at her.

“Good,” Catrin added, entering the room with full arrogance. “Because even I don’t have the patience to chase after you anymore. I have had enough.” She then glanced at both Margaret and Xander before she said with a furrowed brow. “Don’t tell me, you two servants have forgotten your position. Step aside before I —”

“Margaret,” Brenda’s voice interrupted hers. “You and Xander can leave. I will talk to Catrin alone.”

Margaret exchanged a gaze with Xander before they finally moved to leave. And only when they moved did Catrin see what she hadn’t seen when she entered the room.

The monitors and the health equipment —all attached to Brenda.

She paused, not able to react immediately. Her brows furrowed when her eyes finally landed on the frail body of her mother. “You … what’s wrong with you?”
