Chapter 724: Aiden, it can’t be you.

Selene felt a dark shiver run down her spine. She swallowed unconsciously, about to shake her head. “I —”

The man hit the side of the chair hard with his hand, and Selene flinched, all colours draining from her face.

“Speak before I lose my patience,” he growled, “Weren’t you just yelling fine earlier? Then, speak. Do you think we are doing all this for your money?”

“I-If not for m-money, what else could it be? People like you … don’t they do these jobs for money? I can also give you that as long as you let me go. Trust me, I will give you more money than what Arwen had promised you. I—”

Slap!

Before Selene could even finish, the sound cracked through the dark room, followed by a stunned silence.

Selene’s head jerked to the side. Her cheeks stung sharply, lips splitting at the corners. She shivered, blinking rapidly, unable to fully comprehend what had just happened.

“You —”

“Take our madam’s name again, and I will make sure to torture your soul the worst.” The man —Tariq —snarled, his voice low and threatening.

The men behind him were also taken aback. They quickly stepped forward and said, “Tariq, control. We aren’t told to lay our hands on her.”

However, Tariq didn’t mind. Anyway, he remembered what last happened to the woman who tried going against their madam. He believed this time wouldn’t be any different.

They will soon be permitted to torture her. A slap before that wouldn’t harm. And even if it does, he doesn’t mind getting punished for it.

Hearing them call Arwen their madam, Selene looked up at them as though she understood it all.

“It’s Arwen, isn’t it? She is behind this all. She hired you all to bring me here like this. I knew it. I —”

Tariq looked at her threateningly and raised his hand in the air. Seeing him again aiming for her face, she pinched her eyes closed in fear, bracing herself.

However, another slap never came.

Instead, she heard someone’s approaching steps from a distance.

She opened her eyes to look, only to see another figure stepping out from the darkness.

Selene was prepared to see Arwen. After all, this was the perfect time for her to step out and laugh at her.

But the person who actually came out wasn’t Arwen. It was —

“Dad!” She gasped softly as if in disbelief.

There was just a dim light in the room, but that was enough for them to figure out each other’s faces. And right now, Selene could see her father’s face perfectly.

Caden’s brows tugged in a frown when he saw Selene tied to the chair in such a situation. He glared at the men around; however, none of them paid any heed to his glare. They just stared at him as they stared at any other person —without offering any politeness or respect.

Selene, on the other hand, still couldn’t believe that she was seeing her father standing there. “Dad, you are really here? I can’t believe it. You came to save me, right?”

A wave of relief washed over her, and she gathered back her arrogance before glaring at the men there who dared to ignore and slap her. “Quickly punish them. They are the ones who dared to kidnap me and bring me here. He … he even slapped me. He should pay for it … pay with his life.”

Caden heard his daughter, and his eyes flashed with anger. He turned to look at Tariq and asked, “Did you lay your filthy hand on my daughter?”

Tariq looked at him evenly. “So, what if I did. I don’t owe you an explanation.”

“You —”

Before Selene’s father could speak another word, someone’s deep footsteps resounded against the floor, making him pause. Although it was merely the sound, it still felt carrying a weight that stiffened Caden for a second.

Selene heard it as well, and her brows tugged in a frown. But when she saw her father, she felt there was nothing for her to worry about. Looking at Caden, she said, “Dad, it must be her. She must have come to look at me like this. She —”

Her words were left unfinished because a familiar voice intervened.

“Since when did my men owe Mr. Martin an explanation?”

Selene couldn’t fail to recognise that voice. She turned to look, only to freeze.

Aiden.

What was he doing here?

The men there at once bowed in respect, greeting in unison. “Sir!”

Selene felt the floor shifting beneath her feet. She stared at Aiden in disbelief.

But still refusing to accept, she shook her head. “Aiden, you are here. For me? Did you finally see Arwen’s true face? She made her men bring me here like this. They even slapped me. See, my face is already swollen and —”

Aiden’s eyes turned to look at her coldly, and she couldn’t utter another word. His hands were curled into fists inside his pockets. The indifference in his gaze was unmistakable, underlined with fury that he was trying badly to hold within.

“You still haven’t understood it at all,” he gritted out, and Selene blinked at him.

“What do you mean?” she asked, frowning. “Do you still blame me? Can’t you see what Arwen has tried to do to me? She —”

“It’s not her,” Aiden said, his eyes dark.

Selene refused to accept. “How can it not be her? Do you not see I am here, tied like this? They tried to harass me. If not her, who else could want to see me tortured like this?”

“Me,” Aiden admitted without even a faintest guilt, staring right into her eyes.

If Selene had been on her feet, she would have staggered and fallen on the floor. “Y-You? No, that isn’t possible. How could it be you? You are taking her blame, aren’t you?”

Aiden didn’t respond. He stared at her, his gaze only getting darker with each passing second.

Her lips trembled. “Aiden, tell me. It can’t be you. It can’t.”

At this moment, Caden, who had been watching the exchange, lost his patience. he turned to Aiden, demanding, “Aiden, will you tell me what is this all about? QWhy is your company attacking mine? Do you even realize the losses we have sufferend in just few hours?”
