Chapter 1464: Who Is He
As the roars and screams of the gods died down, Atticus flicked the blood off his blade and calmly glanced around.
‘It’s quiet.’
Headless and split corpses littered the ruined streets, yet Atticus wasn’t nearly disturbed by the scene.
He’d found out that the vastness of his will increased as his power increased. What was once a hundred meters had climbed to four hundred. But it wasn’t nearly enough to cover the entire city. It was hard to tell if there were still survivors and how many.
‘I didn’t see the major faction gods.’
Though the gods had been numerous and the battle fast, Atticus was sure he hadn’t killed the three major faction gods he saw earlier.
‘Where are they?’
He shot into the sky and swept his eyes around. Dust covered most parts of the city, but Atticus’ eyes pierced right through them.
‘There. Enhance.’
He blurred forward in a streak of light and appeared high on top of a skyscraper.
There, three figures silently stood, staring at him with cold eyes.
Atticus landed gently.
“I must admit,” the Redflame god, Lasnot, said, “I thought I knew everything about you, but oh was I wrong. You’re what the people of the middle planes call an anomaly. Hard to grasp. But do you know what happens to most anomalies in the middle planes?”
Lasnot swiped a finger across his neck.
“They’re killed. Do you know why? Because they’re stupid enough to try and fight against the order of the world. Stupidity must be punished, don’t you think?”
“What about the ones who survive?”
Lasnot raised an eyebrow. He hadn’t actually expected Atticus to respond.
‘But what is that tone?’
Atticus had spoken in a monotone voice. He felt more like a machine than a man, and it made Lasnot uneasy.
‘And his eyes too…’ it was like staring straight into a camera.
“Hm. You’re talking about the very few who managed to survive?”
Atticus nodded.
“They reach the peak.”
Atticus slowly sheathed his katana.
“And what happens to those who stood in their way?”
Lasnot’s expression darkened. The Iron and Nature faction gods were no different. They could see where he was going with this.
“…they die.”
“Fusion.”
Atticus erased the distance and appeared in front of Lasnot, his dark crimson energy shooting into the skies.
His katana thrust forward in a flash.
Lasnot’s pulse jumped.
‘Fast!’
His instincts kicked in as he roared,
“Flame shield ring!”
His will burst outward, rotating into a barrier-like ring in front of him.
‘I’ll block him, then the others will attack and—’
His thoughts were cut short.
Atticus’ blade pierced straight through the flaming barrier and sank into his shoulder.
“Arrrrh!”
His flesh sizzled and burned, smoke curling into the air. Lasnot’s eyes shot wide as Atticus pushed through the flames, completely unharmed.
‘How is he unharmed!?’
The barrier was made out of his compressed will burning at an insane temperature. That someone, no less a baron, had been able to pass through it unscathed was crazy. Unless…
‘His flame is hotter than mine!’
A fire hotter than the Red Flames? Such thoughts were maddening, yet it occurred right in front of him.
“Ember step!”
As Atticus retracted his katana and brought it down on Lasnot, he flickered away, barely evading the strike.
“Iron Clamp!”
A hefty Iron god tackled Atticus from the side. He wrapped his arms around him, ready to crush him when he saw smoke rising followed by overwhelming pain.
‘Hot!’
It felt like he was embracing molten iron. But the Iron faction members were nothing if not resilient.
‘I have to hold on!’
“Ahhhhhhh!”
He closed in, intending to snap Atticus in two, when Atticus’ knee crashed into his chin.
A shockwave rippled through his skull, and he was sent shooting into the sky.
“Seed bolt!”
The Nature god’s will compressed into numerous seeds that shot towards Atticus like speeding bullets.
His katana flashed like lightning, meeting each seed in a burst of sparks. The eyes of the Nature god narrowed to slits as Atticus cut through everything.
He raised his arm, eyes flickering gold.
“Seed Bolt.”
His burning will condensed into an incalculable number of blazing seeds and shot forward. The Nature god’s pulse jumped.
“Verdant Screen!”
A massive leaf burst from the ground, swirling around her, but her gaze trembled as the flaming seeds tore straight through and reached her.
“Leaf ste—”
The seeds pierced through her in a barrage, leaving numerous holes across her body.
As her lifeless body plummeted from the skies, Lasnot roared,
“Ignite Punch!”
He flickered behind Atticus, flames wrapping his fist as he drove it toward him.
“Ignite punch.”
Atticus’ will blazed around his arm and he brought it forward to meet the attack.
Their fists collided, detonating in a wave of searing force. Choking smoke billowed upward as a wave of heat swept across the city.
“Ark!”
Lasnot screamed as he was blasted backward, smashing through buildings and skipping across the streets until he finally skidded to a stop.
‘I lost…’
A wave of searing heat snapped him out of his thoughts and he turned.
‘M-my arm.’
His right arm had been reduced to a blackened mess. Atticus’ will still ravaged through it as smoke rose from the charred flesh.
They had both clashed, and he’d ended up like this. Even if he hadn’t wanted to admit it, it was far too obvious now.
‘His will is hotter.’
Even after clashing with hundreds of other gods, Atticus’ will still burned hotter than his.
‘We can’t win.’
The temperature spiked, and Lasnot’s eyes trembled.
‘He’s coming.’
He raised his head to see a figure descending from the skies. He sighed.
“We never stood a chance.”
Atticus slammed down on him with so much force that a blast tore out, charring the streets.
His burning will engulfed Lasnot, reducing him and the surrounding debris to ashes.
‘He’s dead.’
As he determined that, Atticus turned his gaze to the sky, where the Iron god hovered with a horrified expression.
Atticus swept his katana to the side.
“You next.”
The Iron god paled as he vanished.
…
“Hahaha!”
A booming laughter rumbled through an endless space.
“I told you, Span! Didn’t I? It would be carnage!”
The Eternal Span was silent, but his lack of words spoke volumes to the Great Verge.
“You’ve always been a good sport, old friend,” the Great Verge said. “I believe you owe me a favor now.”
“…a deal is a deal. What do you want?”
“Great! Don’t worry, I’ll let you know when the time is right. Now, we should sit back and enjoy the show.”
His six eyes glinted with excitement as he stared at the screen. Though there were numerous screens spread out in front of him, none was as large as the one displaying Atticus.
“Just try to imagine the expressions of your gods, Span!”
“The shock.”
“That’s right! It’ll be priceless! C’mon, lemme see.”
“Is that your wish?”
“…Hmph. You’re no fun.” The Great Verge fixed his eyes back on Atticus. He smiled like a child who’d found an interesting toy.
“I’ll settle for imagining it then. I can’t wait to see what he’ll do next!”
The Verge was right. Atticus’ current actions had caused a wave of shock across the Span.
The Great Verge’s sudden rule that mandated all gods in the Verge to participate in the Ascension Games had come as a surprise to the powers of the Span.
Though most already watched the games as a form of entertainment, more people tuned in this time to see what was so special about this game.
Most gods had simply focused on their participating faction gods in each layer. And to their surprise, in the Baron layer, something impossible had occurred.
A sole god had unleashed carnage on hundreds of others.
Across vast worlds of molten lava, heavy forests, and iron fortresses, gods narrowed their eyes on a singular screen displaying a young boy standing amidst a ruined city. The all had the same thought:
Who was he?
…
After killing the Iron faction god, Atticus had to move across the city and kill the other surviving gods before the mechanical voice echoed once more.
“One god left, all others dead. The territory is claimed by Baron Atticus Ravenstein.”
Atticus felt a wave hit his will.
‘What?’
He slipped out of Logoth and staggered back, gripping his head. As his will stabilized, he exhaled.
‘I can feel a connection.’
What was once four hundred meters had shot up to encompass the entire territory and more.
‘I can see and feel everything in the forest I came from.’
The reach was truly incredible, and Atticus couldn’t help but feel glad he decided to claim a territory.
‘Now let’s see…’
He searched every nook and cranny of the city as well as the forest. He hadn’t seen Magnus in the city, and he hoped he would be able to find him in the forest.
However, after searching for a moment, Atticus frowned.
‘I can’t find him.’
