Chapter 896: It’s over…

The terrifying energy had vanished. Everything fell silent again, save for a few loose stones clattering down the rubble.

Ethan’s figure—and The Cosmic Core—were both gone.

The zombies all shuddered, a creeping sense of dread washing over them.

“Where’s the boss?”

“Where’d he go? I can’t feel a trace of his presence.”

“Don’t tell me… he went down with The Cosmic Core?”

“…”

The thought hit them like a punch to the gut. Panic set in as the horde of zombies frantically scanned the area.

But the battlefield was empty. Not a single sign of Ethan remained.

Some of the zombies even let out anguished howls, raw and guttural.

“Hahahahaha! He’s dead!”

Suddenly, a crazed laugh rang out from the rubble.

Endless rose from the debris, hair wild, body covered in dust and grime. He looked like hell—but his eyes gleamed with manic triumph.

He’d been the closest to The Cosmic Core. He’d seen it all.

At the final moment, Ethan had been engulfed in golden light—completely obliterated, disintegrated into nothing.

“What a damn fool,” Endless sneered, lips curling into a twisted grin. “I told him to smash the stone slab, but no—he had to play hero and try to absorb The Cosmic Core. Naïve to the end.”

He felt like fate had finally smiled on him. Maybe it was divine will. Maybe it was just dumb luck.

He didn’t know exactly why Ethan vanished along with The Cosmic Core.

But one thing was clear—he was gone.

And with Ethan out of the picture, Endless was once again the strongest Deathless Sovereign in the world.

“Bastard!”

Ethan’s loyal undead lieutenants clenched their jaws, fury burning in their eyes.

Bulldozer, Laura, and PhD stood at the front, their faces grim.

Was the fight… really not over?

If Ethan was truly gone, then this was their one shot to take Endless down. If they waited for him to recover, they wouldn’t stand a chance.

They had to push past the grief. Had to keep fighting.

“If the boss is gone, then what’s the point of me sticking around?” Bulldozer rumbled, voice low and heavy. “I’ll go first. Let me be the cannon fodder. I’ll take a swing at Endless. If I die, so be it.”

Laura turned to look at him, her eyes softer than usual. For once, she didn’t mock him. “I’m with you.”

The Zombie Kings were ready to throw everything they had into one last stand. They were all in—no hesitation, no regrets.

But Endless didn’t flinch. Even with his power drained to a fraction of what it was, he still had more than enough to crush them.

And behind him stood Lilith and Nightwraith. Though both were badly wounded and nearly out of energy, they were still alive.

Three Deathless Sovereigns. Still towering like mountains. Still untouchable.

“Are we… really going to lose?” Claire and the others felt despair sink into their bones. It was like falling into a bottomless pit, the air ripped from their lungs.

Even after all this, after everything they’d thrown at them, the Deathless Sovereigns still stood.

The strongest human warriors were spent, barely able to stand. They were about to follow in the footsteps of those who came before—buried forever in the cursed soil of Necroterra, nameless bones lost to time.

“Why… why did it have to end like this?”

Many dropped to their knees, sobbing, broken.

Nightwraith’s face twisted into a cruel grin. “That was way too close. If things hadn’t gone sideways, we might’ve actually lost. But now… I think I’ll help myself to a few crystal cores. Recharge a bit.”

The three Sovereigns were gathering their strength again, ready to strike.

But then—

A voice rang out. Smooth. Deep. Magnetic.

It wasn’t loud, but it cut through the chaos like a blade, echoing through the souls of every zombie on the field.

“…It’s over.”

“Huh?”

A collective gasp rippled through the undead horde as every zombie turned toward the source of the voice.

Up in the sky, golden light began to swirl—thin strands at first, then thicker, weaving together slowly, forming the outline of a figure.

The pressure that came with it was immense, suffocating, as if the heavens themselves were watching. The aura was unmistakable—identical to the one The Cosmic Core had just released.

As the figure solidified, Ethan’s face emerged from the light—calm, sharp, and strikingly handsome. His skin was pale, his long, narrow eyes seemed to hold galaxies within them.

He floated in midair, golden radiance blazing behind him like a divine halo. He looked like a god descending from the stars, gazing down at the world below.

“Wha…”

The smug expressions on the three Deathless Sovereigns froze instantly. Their eyes bulged in disbelief, like they’d just seen a ghost.

“You… you’re alive?!”

“I won the bet,” Ethan said coolly, voice steady as stone.

“ROOOAAARRR!”

His undead followers erupted in a deafening roar—not of grief this time, but of pure, unfiltered joy.

Bulldozer, Laura, and the other Zombie Kings were practically shaking with excitement.

He was back.

He actually came back!

“Look! The boss isn’t dead!”

“Of course not! Like hell the boss would die!”

“Waaaaahhhhhh!”

Tears streamed down the faces of even the most hardened Zombie Kings. Their howls were now filled with awe and overwhelming relief.

Meanwhile, Endless, Lilith, and Nightwraith—the three mighty Deathless Sovereigns—stood frozen, their faces drained of color.

None of it made sense.

How?

They’d seen it with their own eyes—Ethan had been obliterated by The Cosmic Core. There was no way he could’ve survived.

“This… this has to be an illusion! It’s not real! He can’t be back!” Nightwraith shrieked, eyes wild with panic.

Lilith’s expression twisted into madness. She and Nightwraith both surged forward, summoning the last of their strength for one final, desperate attack.

But Ethan didn’t even flinch.

He simply raised his hand and closed his fingers slightly in the air.

In an instant, Lilith and Nightwraith froze mid-charge. Their screams cut off like a switch had been flipped. Their bodies locked up, and the light in their eyes began to fade.

Streams of energy—thick and fluid like molten light—poured from their skulls, flowing straight into Ethan’s palm.

He opened his hand.

Two crystal cores gleamed in his grasp.

Before either of them could even react, their bodies collapsed to the ground with a heavy thud. Their eyes remained wide open, frozen in terror.

“You… this…” Endless stammered, watching in horror.

And then it hit him.

Ethan had absorbed The Cosmic Core.

The legends were true—whoever could fully absorb it would gain control over all energy in the universe. They would become omnipotent.

And now, Ethan stood before them, bathed in golden light, calm and untouchable.

He wasn’t just powerful.

He was the universe’s new master.

“Someone… actually succeeded?” Endless whispered, eyes hollow, face pale with despair.

He couldn’t even muster the will to fight. His knees buckled, and he dropped to the ground with a dull thud.

“I’ve lost…”

Ethan didn’t even look at him.

He simply walked past, step by step, like Endless wasn’t even worth acknowledging.

And then—

Another crystal core appeared in Ethan’s hand.

Thud!

Endless’s body hit the ground, lifeless.

Just like that, the legend of the Deathless Sovereign came to an end.

Ethan had returned from the void, and with a few effortless moves, wiped out all three Deathless Sovereigns.

His power was beyond comprehension.

For a moment, the battlefield was silent.

Then—

“ROOOOAAARRR!”

The undead erupted in a frenzy of cheers, their voices shaking the earth.

“We won!”

“Long live the boss!”

“YEAHHHH!”

The celebration was deafening. The zombies howled and roared, their joy uncontainable.

But among the humans—Claire and the others—there was a different reaction.

They stared up at Ethan, awe-struck… and uneasy.

“He’s the strongest now… You think he’s gonna turn on us?” Claire whispered, heart pounding. After all, the grudge between humans and zombies ran deep.

But then something happened that none of them expected.

Ethan looked down at the three crystal cores in his hand.

And didn’t absorb them.

He didn’t need to.

They were useless to him now.

Instead, he slowly opened his palm and let them rise into the sky.

The cores floated upward, glowing brighter and brighter, until they lit up the heavens like three newborn suns.

Golden rays spilled across the land, washing over the battlefield, warm and radiant.

It felt like the dawn of a new era.
