Two hours later, the two buildings were nearly done, and all that was left was the roofs.
By this time, Garan had already taken the babies back home, leaving Althea to watch and plan on her platform. The children were impatient and wanted to play elsewhere before half an hour was even over.
What did this mean? It meant that if they weren’t on the strollers, they’d be walking to the edge of the platform.
Interestingly, because she made it in the middle of the park with denser trees, only a few people actually noticed her still there. (They did, however, coo at the babies when they headed down and went back home).
On the other hand, those who did know she was there were the ones who thought of a similar idea with her and created their own earth platforms. Of course, since their elements were not so strong, the platforms were not as tall nor as stable, despite being a product of team effort.
Regardless of viewing height, people still enjoyed the show.
“It’s almost done! I’m so excited!”
“Where are you going first?”
“Whichever is nearer to us, of course!”
She could hear talks from below, and there was a lot of chatter. The crowd had long seeped through the next street, so the cacophony of sound really expanded several blocks.
As the construction reached its final stages, Althea also noted the details she had added.
As usual, she spent a bit of silver and gold to customize their appearances (she had recovered some chump change by now; transactions in Alterra never slept). She made sure that both buildings fit with the overall aesthetic theme of Alterra—which was wood, stone, and greens.
She also added a bit of black metal in the engraving of the Mercenary Hall, as well as larger columns and taller ceilings, in order to emit a certain gravitas into it. She chose certain colors and textures of the metals, so they still fit well with the current themes despite having these accents.
And she added a lot of accents, especially in the interiors. This was the first thing new mercenaries going through the Hall would see, so she invested quite a bit on it.
First impressions could go a long way, after all.
As for the Healing Sanctuary, she added a lot more softer motifs, also adding some crawling vines in some walls, to indicate that it was a place of healing.

If she could whistle, she would’ve.
How long had it been since she had seen such… small numbers?
She comforted herself with the fact that the tax and the bulk transactions that’d come in soon would be large, and she’d regain what she invested very soon.
Besides, even if she didn’t, the territory would work just fine with just the bank.
The buildings were completed half an hour later, and people immediately queued up to try them out. (It was an unspoken rule not to line up in advance, because it’d ‘block the view’, even if the only parts remaining were roofs).
Of course, the hawkers were prepared to make the most of the long queues. It was also a common sight for everyone lining up to have something in their hands while they waited.
Amusingly, there were already variations of wheelchairs for lazy people. It wasn’t electric-powered (yet) but more like a special type of bicycle with a pedal, though there were minimal movements involved.
It wasn’t that they couldn’t walk, but if they knew they’d be sitting for a majority of the trip, they’d take this one. It was complete with a surface to serve as a table.
Most just called it the ‘moving chair’, while some would derogatorily call it the ‘fatso chair’.
An interesting thing was that, unlike the queue to the Mercenary Hall, the Healing Sanctuary’s was much shorter. She watched and observed and realized that many people who lined up didn’t even enter.
They just shook their heads and went their way. These were the majority, in fact, and very few people actually went in.
Althea’s eyebrows rose, curious. In a blink, the platform underneath her lowered down. It was so smooth she looked like she was riding an elevator.
Without a change in her expression, she headed to queue up at the Sanctuary.
People were facing forward and didn’t notice her at first, but when they did, they offered to give up their positions. She refused.
As it was, she wouldn’t be waiting for long anyway. She’d rather observe the people ahead of her more.
It did not take long for her to know what the issue was.
“What? 5 gold?! Just for the entrance?”
Ah, so that was why people didn’t enter. Five gold was easily a month’s salary of a person with a good job. She didn’t even add anything here. This was the cost price, and whatever they earned here would be a small percentage of this amount.
Even so, very few people could afford it. This was why, in the business sense, it was probably not worth it, especially when there were far cheaper alternatives. In the hospital, citizens could even get certain services for free.
For Lords, adding markup would make it too expensive even for better-off members, and the quantity of users wouldn’t return the initial investment.
This was why Ferrol didn’t take it, and most towns didn’t as well.
Of course, that wasn’t a problem for her, so when it was her turn, she was already preparing to pay.
[Lord Detected. Lords can use the Healing Sanctuary for free once a day.]
Hmm, how convenient.
