Chapter 1636: Mason and Abundance

As many things were happening all over the region, there was also something brewing just outside of it.

A few hundred kilometers southwest, there were also a few new arrivals in Ferron Town.

“Ah, been a while since we’ve been here, huh?” one said, and he had an imposing aura around him.

This was Wazan, the Valov Town Lord’s right-hand man, sent to investigate various things. After various detours, they finally ended up in this Town, very much different from theirs.

In terms of wealth, it was unclear which one was richer, but Ferrol had a livelier atmosphere while Valov—being a Black Metal processing town—was a lot more dour.

He liked the latter more and thought Ferrol should be the same.

“Let’s see what interesting things are happening on this side.”

…

Back in Alterra, the Eastern Diplomacy Team and their guests had finally arrived near the walls.

The visitors all had blank looks on their faces. They were pale from the fear, extreme tension, and shock they experienced over the past few hours. It was mostly just shock the closer they got to the Town, though.

It was really amazing. Those stickers really worked!

Those stickers with smiling faces actually shooed away monsters stronger than they were!

“How…” they asked, for the nth time that day. There were more and more strong mobs in their way, and the Alterran guards couldn’t get all of them in time before they could approach such a large group.

But lo and behold, monsters level 15 and below really skipped over them! As for the stronger ones, Ryo and the rest focused on getting rid of them early on, so they didn’t pose much trouble either.

One of the Lord’s right-hand men couldn’t help but whisper to his Lord’s ear, making the latter want to push his face away.

“Milord, how do they do this? Is it some aborigine technology we don’t know about?

“I know of some mosquito-repelling stickers, but beasts?! Town level ones, too!”

The visitors were really impressed. For a while, there were a lot of doubts about what was going on, and they were very antsy, fearing that the Alterrans would throw them to the mobs they could not handle.

But that never happened. Hours of travel passed by, and they did not cross a single monster. It was unbelievable!

Rather, they felt they were dreaming. They didn’t know it was possible to travel for ten minutes without a monster popping up to eat them! SOBS

Anyway, seeing one of Alterra’s prized innovations at work added a layer of reliability to everything.

Sure, the food was impressive, but after so many months, most of the Terran-led villages had already made their own innovations.

Basically, most Terran territories that had lasted a year in this place had their own cuisine that was far superior to the system restaurant offering. They couldn’t compare to what Alterrans brought in, but it wasn’t enough for the villagers to throw all caution to the wind.

They all had restaurants in their territories as well. First, because it took them a while to actually innovate as they were too focused on survival at the start, and second was that the supplies/raw materials for manually-made food weren’t actually enough to feed their tens of thousands of population.

Anyway, now that Alterra was a legitimate territory with so much technology, the Lords had to think of what they had to do to get all these things.

These stickers, for one, were too valuable! They definitely needed a few in their spaces, just for peace of mind!

They then looked at their wallets and wondered if that’d be enough. They still had territories to run and that needed money, too. Just maintaining their territory hires, which was easily hundreds of gold a month, was draining the wallet.

Anyway, this meant that the few hundred or a thousand or so of gold they had in their spaces were not necessarily liquid funds they could use to buy whatever they wanted.

So….they thought of what else they could offer in exchange. Fortunately, most of the territories coming to Alterra also had their own resources.

For example, there was a large rocksalt mine between Abundance and Great Villages, so the food in their places was relatively good, and they didn’t have hyponatremia even when their levels were super low.

The resource actually caused a lot of tensions between the villages in the past year, and there had been a few skirmishes that almost—almost—led to war.

If Great Village hadn’t been attacked by Supreme Village back then, in fact, Abundance could’ve declared war.

When his attack didn’t go through, Crispin (the Lord of Abundance Village) was reminded that there were plenty of enemies that surrounded them, and going to war when it wasn’t even needed would just weaken their forces.

That said, he had the option to take advantage and attack again after two weeks had over or he could just stop things before it got worse.

He did not have to be the one to decide because, a few days later, Great Village won the war, and many representatives visited Abundance Village, offering a reluctant alliance on their own.

The alliance was renewable annually and, for the span of 1 year, Abundance Village could mine 70% of the rocksalt mine while Great Village retained the rest.

That one year was almost finished, and both territories were waiting to see whether the other was going to break the sensitive balance that they had now.

This was also why Crispin went with Alterrans in the first place, despite having so much doubt and taking so many risks. At the time, Great Village had already agreed to the alliance, and if he didn’t accept, then he’d really be left behind.

On the other hand, Mason village specialized in noodles. It didn’t quite achieve the flavor and the shelf life of Alterra’s but it was also very good. They also had their own version of crackers, jerkies, and so on.

Anyway, soon, they passed a few more patches of forests, though the difference was that they encountered human teams clearing out monsters.

Many were in uniforms, and so many were skilled elementalists.

Really skilled elementalists.

Some of those techniques they didn’t even know could be done!!

This caused many people to sparkle with inspiration. If they could learn more skills, then that alone could make this trip worth it.

And the further they went, the more people they saw. They also saw groups converging towards… a standalone sentry?

They watched as that team attracted monsters, and used it as backing, both to block their backs and also as an extra attacking force.

“Is that a sentry?” Menarco asked. In the middle of nowhere?

He belatedly realized that this must be part of the territory. He hadn’t thought of it immediately, simply because most Lords would want to use the new area they received every upgrade.

Ryo nodded. “Yes, this means we’re about to enter the scope of Alterra.”

Sure enough, when they reached this sentry, they received the long-awaited welcome message.

“Our entrance fees are more expensive than here…” a person from Abundance Village said.

“So expensive?” Hodai, the Lord of Great Village asked. “Ours is a bit cheaper.”

“It’s a Town,” Menarco, Lord of Mason Village, couldn’t help but comment at the side.

Crispin looked at them, suddenly a bit embarrassed by his charges. “Well, our village is called Abundance.” He was referring to benefits, but someone had to rain on his parade.

Hodai looked at him. “Abundance of bills, you mean?”

The two Lords narrowed their eyes and glared at each other.

Menarco shook his head and then took a look at the next window. It was a massive bulk of text that he realized was the Rules.

Others were also reading the rules, one by one, and it took them longer than they expected. The other two Lords also snapped out of it and started reading the rules, too, and they couldn’t help but gasp a bit.

“These rules and regulations…” Hodai said, his voice squeaking just thinking about the costs. “It must be extremely expensive.

They were Lords, so they naturally had an idea of how much specific rules cost, and how there were additional costs wherever their territory upgraded, too.

Even the slightest variation in wording could make one’s knees go weak. One rule probably costs hundreds of gold. They could not imagine how much all of these would cost….

They…couldn’t imagine how it was possible!

“So many rules…” Hodai couldn’t help but mumble, walking closer to Alterrans to probe. The other Lords and citizens also did the same. They had been asking since earlier, but they wanted to know more about the rules, specifically this time.

“We’ve had these rules since we were a village,” Bento said when someone asked them if they had so many rules because they were already town level.

The answer was something they did not expect and could only gape.

How rich were these people? How rich was the Lord, whoever he was?!

Anyway, they continued walking forward, seeing sentries here and there. The deeper they went, the more people and also more sentries they saw.

They were more or less settled near the sentries, training while having the tower cover their backs. This way, their citizens could go farther from the wall but still feel relatively safe, which was conducive to their growth as fighters.

Menarco couldn’t help but nod by himself. “We’re not even inside yet and I’m already learning.”

Of course, he and his people also trained a lot. If they didn’t, how could they have survived for this long? They also had their own training regimes and requirements, as well as privileges for the strong and other benefits.

However, it was clear that there was still a lot to learn.

And it was fascinating.
