Chapter 1632: Diplomatic Missions (Part 1)
The letter from Ryo’s East-bound team arrived next. They had also skipped a few territories, but they did pass through some territories that the soldiers had ventured into when they were looking for their relatives.
So far, there were two Villages that they skipped because they had been taken over. They got some of the weaker members to sneak in as refugees (someone threw mud at him for realism) to see a place’s state before starting negotiations.
One of these was Supreme Village—which they had a map of thanks to Cuppin Ferrol. As for their last stop, it’d be a small village not too far east of Belluga called Mason Village.
It was actually nearer to Khlack than Belluga was, and it was only a matter of which direction Patte and the others chose to take, in which case they chose the former.
Ryo’s team’s path was first towards the Northeastern portions of the region (relative to Alterra), before heading Southeast, where Mason village was.
This meant they were targeting villages nearer the ‘safer’ portion as they had several Terran villages buffering between them and the aborigine territories outside.
Ryo’s Team had passed by two territories so far. They were called the ‘Great Village’ (yes, it was another Lord with a great naming sense) and ‘Abundance Village’.
For a while, they hadn’t been attacked by aborigines. They were, however, warring against fellow Terrans. These two territories were on the defense side each time they went to war, and they had won all of them so far.
Interestingly, Great Village had been attacked by its neighbor Supreme Village, not long after the Migration.
The man’s rationale was how dare they use the superlatives to name their village? As if he patented the use of the words or something.
Anyway, because the Supreme Village Lord, Ongko, broke some rules, they heard he was penalized instead and was deep in debt after the war, making them lose easily when an aborigine village attacked.
Interestingly, when Gill learned of the Lord’s name there, he actually reacted, saying that back in Terran, the guy was the son of a very corrupt person and was a bad seed as well. 1
The only citizens that remained with him were those who had no capability to leave and those who wanted to take advantage of the helpless.
Ryan and the others reported the information on these villages.
In contrast, the deals with Great Village and Abundance Village—which were doing relatively well by themselves—naturally met with a lot of pushback.
After all, they were pretty much asking for their Lord.
No one would feel uncomfortable and their advisors vehemently advised against it.
How could they let their Lords be taken away by complete strangers? Their lives literally depended on the Lord. If they died, all of them could follow shortly after, especially those who could only survive inside territories.
In their minds: Who knew what kind of nefarious plans these people were planning?
Besides, if they wanted an alliance, shouldn’t their own Lord go here?
The Alterrans almost laughed, but they (for the most part) kept it to themselves.
Logically speaking, according to the information these people had, that was indeed the most rational way to go about it. Alterra was asking for an alliance. Why would others take the risk?
Even saying they were doing this for the greater good would only be met with cynicism. If they just said they were a town, that was even more unbelievable.
Thankfully, this world had an oath system that made their lives so much easier. After they made the oath of honesty, they answered all the questions as concisely as they could without revealing anything too sensitive.
They left and let them discuss it among themselves, though not without leaving some Alterran produce for them to take. They also handed a hand-drawn map from there to Alterra.
They generally didn’t sell their maps casually, even for a price, since it also had to do with security. Everyone’s maps were relatively updated, so they had to sketch one out if they wanted to pass information over.
They drew some landmarks, natural or not, and some were even signages (which also made them cynical), as well as the approximate distances. Q Anyway, Alterra was slowly adding more and more signages and man-made landmarks around them, not to mention the expanding road networks.
Fortunately, while Abundance Village had to be left alone to think among themselves, they convinced the other one before they had to leave and move on to the next village.
Great Village was easier to convince for two reasons. One, they were a mix of different nationalities and a portion of whom were Edenian; another, some soldiers had been through there before though they did not stay long. They were using their rounds to go around and look for relatives, and while some found success, some did not.
Their levels got the Lord to greet them, and at the time, they just told them where Alterra was. Sadly, the villagers were just focused on surviving day to day.
Who had the resources to go on adventures?
The most positive finding in this was that there were several refugees who arrived in Great Village since the soldiers passed by there months ago.
Rina, Reuben’s sister, was found! She also looked relatively healthy.
It was just that she was already a month pregnant. The father was the son of the Great Village Lord, no less, who found his way ‘home’ just recently along with her.
Obviously, this meant that she could not go out, no matter how much she wanted to.
They did, however, send Reuben a letter along with the report they sent back to Alterra. He definitely would when he had the chance, and he could also be the one to escort the Lord to Alterra for the oath-taking.
A week in, and there were already positive responses, just a little less than the negatives and unclear ones. What could happen next?
Thanks for your consistent support, Alterrans!
