Chapter 1626: Drugs in Alterra (Part 1)
A few more weeks passed and most of the reconnaissance teams had finally returned, while new teams—aiming to further investigate the sources of the drugs—had already spread out to the areas where they found it.
Hence, most of the scouts were roaming around the Western and Southwest territories, as the powder had already spread wide in the aborigine territories adjacent to them.
Some called it White Happiness, as it was introduced, but in places where Alterra had influence, they called it Devil’s Powder, instead. This was targeting aborigines who had no idea what it was, as well as the Terrans who hadn’t seen or encountered it before.
Elder Ansel had even instructed some artists and writers to start creating simple books (for children and for adults) that would teach children about it, as well as its evil. It had to be presented in a way that they wouldn’t get curious instead.
The distribution had grown at an exponential rate within the past month, and had begun to reach places it hadn’t before.
For instance, Alterra itself.
Some merchants hoped to make big money with the powder, especially in Alterra, wherein wealth seemed to be so spread out, and anyone would be able to afford it.
One of these merchants was a man named Adeek, who came from Ferrol Town.
His caravan was focused primarily on some Level 1 and a Level 2 Town south and west of Ferrol, and at some point he encountered this good thing.
He received this enlightenment a few weeks ago, when they went to the Level 2 Town Uber Town. He was taking advantage of the news that Uber Town was assisting in another war, so they thought some supplies and goods would be welcome.
Historically speaking, this was a good time to sell for a higher price, and he had gotten very rich through the years because of it.
Who’d have thought that he’d find products to procure instead.
In this town, the powder was being used widely by all strata of society. There was not much variation, but because the higher-level individuals could consume and afford more, they had a lot more in stock.
He happened to be business partners with a few nobles there and got a whiff and was hooked.
The drug had appeared not long ago but, as a savvy businessman, he knew the opportunities—and they were endless.
However, when he brought it to Ferrol, he only tried to test the market first, hiring someone not associated with his team to see a few.
However, that person was captured and he realized Ferrol was, for some reason, beginning to hunt down sellers!
Fortunately, even those sellers didn’t know who he was. He was wearing a mask when he sent the bags to them to sell, so he got out unscathed.
He believed that the queer lord was just greedy for the goods, so he hoped to sell it elsewhere.
The first thought was: Alterra!
The Land of the rich! The Land of the open-minded!
Maybe he could even exchange the powder for some other goods that’d make him even more money!
As such, Adeek decided to join the fun, decidedly becoming a distributor of the money powder!
It so happened that a caravan to Alterra was scheduled for departure the day after he arrived. Without much thought, in his rush, he registered as a member in hopes of making good money out of this trip!
He started out by testing the waters again, just in case. He walked around, observing who would need a job desperately enough to make an oath of non-disclosure with him.
He found one by hanging around the dormitory areas, since he knew this was the place for people who would be more open to ‘quick money’ schemes.
He was hanging around in the park nearby when he saw the person. He was lazily gathering resources, grumbling how unfair it was, how that mere woman of a sister was living leisurely while he still had to work like this.
In Adeek’s mind, this was the type of person to test things out, easily manipulable, greedy, and in dire need of money.
So one day, when the man was heading home and passing through the forest, he appeared right next to him.
“You want quick and easy money?” he asked. “Come with me.”
The man came with him after being handed a couple of silvers. He was quite careful too. He wore a robe of sorts while receiving the oath. After all, if this didn’t go well, then he’d have outed himself by being seen with this guy. It was a one-sided oath too, wherein he didn’t have to disclose his name at all.
He was a businessman, so he naturally had done his research. This place was quite famous for how fast their information travelled to and from and even straight to the authorities.
It truly felt like there were eyes and ears everywhere! Even gossiping aunties! He didn’t dare underestimate them!
He then asked him to sell the powder to the people in the dormitory. Just a sniff for a couple of silvers for taste.
This usually worked with some demo products (which he allowed the guy to have). It was a happy powder after all, and it worked especially well with two kinds of people: The Suffering or the Bored.
That was to say, the poor who had too many problems and were suffering daily and those who were too rich that who had no problems, respectively.
He assumed the dormitory of Alterra either had the first one or the combination of both.
Alterra was a very unique place in that way. While there were definitely poor people in its poorest place of residence, most were definitely living a good life too. The dormitories here were criminally cheap. For most who were used to so much worse, it was more than enough.
Imagine: a couple of coppers for a soft comfortable bed every day, they probably saved up a lot of silvers for a sniff!
It was the perfect market!
