Chapter 1620: Fights and Loss (Part 1)
TL;DR: Some events back in Terran and how some families survived it or not. Galleon and his family.
…
___
He guided them well. Using the trays as extra defense, he also used them to pull a zombie’s head and trapped them against the counter, all while he was waving his own weapon around.
He helped his wife make her first kill first. Shivering, she held her knife and hacked the zombie that he had weakened previously.
His heart broke when he saw her sob so much, but she realized he was serious, and that they really might need to do this to survive.
Hack! Slash!
Finally, she managed to kill one, receiving a similar message. However, she was already the 211st survivor by this time and there were no rewards anymore.
Then, after that was the boy’s turn, though he almost hacked his hand instead. The zombie apparently had one last burst of energy even after he cut all of its appendages.
Unexpectedly, the dog reacted as quickly as he did and actually got the final shot.
It was then that he found out dogs could also awaken. Visually, however, there didn’t seem to be much difference with the cocker spaniel.
Anyway, after everyone was awakened, Galleon secured them by temporarily hiding them in a cabinet. There were still about a dozen zombies within the room. The doors were currently closed or blocked, though mostly because people panicked so much that the succeeding stampede accidentally blocked the pathway instead.
As for the sliding door heading out to the al fresco dining, it was wide open, so more undead from the outside could also come in endlessly, which was something he wanted to stop.
So…what now?
They were undergoing a large disaster with an unknown scale (though he had an idea, considering the system message from before), there was no signal, and they were in a foreign country.
In the end, he figured that what he could do for now was to secure his family, secure a safe place, and secure inventory. They were in a restaurant, so there was a pantry. The problem was that there were still zombies in the room, and more could come in, and he did not want to risk his family’s safety if he could help it.
In the end, he decided to clear this room of the undead and close the damned door, so his family could move at ease.
He jumped over the counter, grabbing a piece of meat from the table that had been covered by a corpse by accident. He had been observing and saw how when the zombies ate the humans, they’d gobble the meat too, but they ignored the others like the vegetables and starch. This meant that they were attracted to non-zombie meat in general, fresh or cooked.
“Hey!!” He yelled, running away along with the meat he could find. Dozens of zombies came rushing to him, and he lured them out the door, closing the sliding door in the process. This was a high-end hotel, so the quality of the glass was better than that of others.
He still lured them further out just in case, and this included the nearby zombies. After they were far enough, he threw the meat up—including ones he hid in the space—before hurriedly blinking to safety.
The blink skill could be used every 10 seconds for 3 minutes, which was fine for a while because he just dashed and blinked so he could get as far away from the enemies as possible.
However, just when he was about to blink back to the restaurant, something fast came at him. He instinctively blocked it with a lid he hid in his space, but he was a bit startled by the power behind the push.
Bang!!
Zombies, and they were quite fast.
Fortunately, now that he wasn’t taken off guard, he judged their speed and strength to just be comparable to a normal man compared to the other zombies, which moved like they had rigor mortis (which they probably had).
As a former soldier, he managed to handle it after a couple of extra hacks.

“What is this…”
However, he wasn’t able to question things too much because there were others, including other zombies, who started to approach him. No matter how superior he was against them, a mob was dangerous to him.
In the end, he had no choice but to blink into the restaurant.
“Husband!”
“Papa!!”
“Don’t talk!” he yelled, carrying them both out of the counter area. He put them down and pushed them towards the storage area, which was blocked by a couple of corpses.
They hurriedly dragged the corpses out of their way, but they were heavy and not few, so it posed quite a challenge for their small family.
BANG!
BANG!
By this time, the zombies that had been after him before sensed where he headed, despite the door being closed, and they were now banging on the glass wall. He belatedly realized that there were awning windows above eye level, and that was probably how they captured his scent.
CRASH!!
He seemed to have overestimated the quality of the glass walls. After a few of those upgraded zombies, as well as dozens of normal zombies, came at it, it shattered into granules. It was tempered glass, which meant when it broke, it’d break into smaller, not-too-sharp pieces.
It also meant that the entire panel was broken—seeming to crumble—leaving them completely open.
“Kyaaa!”
Galleon turned his body to face the monsters, guarding his family behind him. “Focus on clearing our path!” he yelled, swiping one zombie at a time.

He was getting tired. He was not young anymore, after all, and these enemies really did feel endless.

[Congratulations! You are now Level 2!]
“What….”
Galleon blinked when he vaguely felt reenergized. His eyes sparked at the discovery that he’d regain some energy upon a level up.

It was around this time that he heard screams from a distance.
“Kyaaa! Help!!!”
“Wha– help!!”
As much as he wanted to help them—especially with his instincts as a soldier—his family was a priority. His eyes constricted when he saw that they were followed by dozens more monsters!
Fortunately, it was here that the path to the storage room door finally opened. However—
“Husband! It’s locked!”
Sorry for detailing! It ended up happening and I couldn’t bear delete it. They’re recurring characters anyway xD
